vaccum the floors daily and change your vents. Open windows when possible during the day to air out. If you have dogs brush them often to get rid of the dander as well as the extra hair. I'm sorry but couging for weeks (and months) at a time is NOT normal. There is something that is irritating the baby / toddler. Clean your house.

Hi just curious did you find an answer to your little girls cough??

I had childhood asthma and my pediatrician told my other to have me blow up balloons to exercise my lungs and to build air capacity.

Wow, I thought my wife and I were alone on this one.

I cannot believe how many parents  have experienced the same issue with their little ones.

My 3 year old boy has been having this same problem for the last 2 months.  He is fine during the day but once we put him to bed and he starts to fall asleep the coughing starts. Sometimes he will cough until he throws up! :

His pediatrician prescribed an inhaler called pro air which didn't help, a week later he prescribed another inhaler which has a steroid; this one has helped a little but the coughing at night still persists.  At this point I am ready for a second opinion from a different doctor and I will also invest in a humidifier.

It's been over a year since you posted this. I'm having the same issue with my 3 year old boy. Has your daughter's condition improved? If so, what did you end up doing to help her get rid of the cough? I'd appreciate your response. Thank you.

guys, my daughter (3 yr old) was coughing almost every 5 min the whole night for almost a week. i cried to see her go though that pain. i search on the net and found people had same problem, however no one mentioned solution to the problem. We solved the problem by 1. changing bedroom and shiting to ground floor 2. putting tub of hot water with few drops of euclipts oil 3. changing cough syrup to "Toplexil" containing oxomemazine. 4. using Indian ayurvedic powder with honey. We think changing the cough syrup and using ayurvedic powder with honey was the solution but cant say for sure. She is fine now for almost a week with occasional cough. in the night she sleeps well. Thank god.

Try these methods, somthing will work for your child. And give feedback so others can learn.

I am thankful for this post so we can all get some help and ideas. My 4 year old has just recently started coughing at night horribly and nothing seems to help, the dr put her on Claritin and it does nothing!!! does singulair really do the trick? I'm desperate and all dr seems to think it is is allergies but there is no way. She was on antibiotics and the cough stopped abower said everything looked fine but a week later here it is again. Hope all of these babies get better and we get peace of mind.

I have 2 sons and they both have had the same issue with coughing at night till they almost throw-up and we have tried everything from allery meds, inhalers, to numbulizers.  What I have found helps the most is allery meds like zyrtec, claritin or generic and giving them some 1 tsp of honey or little remedies honey elixer just before bed and proping the heads on on pillows.  The pillow thing seems to work really well, especially when they wake up at night coughing.  We just go in and prop their heads back up on pillows and they it seems to help.  Alot of the issues are caused by post nasal drainage which irrates the throat causing coughing.  I am no doctor, but we have been to every possible doctor and researched till we were blue in the face and this is what has worked for us.  I hope this helps :-)

I know this sounds crazy but my toddler and I BOTH are sleeping as a result. She's 3 1/2 allergies and asthma, coughs all night. Have done the meds and the nebulizer - she still coughed all night. I cover her feet in Vicks vapor rub and put socks on them at night. Totally works

You could try switching laundry detergents to something "Free and Clear" with no fragrance, as your child could be allergic to the detergent fragrance. "All Free and Clear" works well, as does Tide, but it's more expensive.

Possible temporary @ home solution: My 4 yr old son just started this chronic nighttime cough a week ago & it is MADDENING! He's fine all day so I forget that there's even a problem & then bedtime comes. Like clock-work, just as we're all in bed & shutting our eyes, here comes the cough. I get up, 1st have him blow his nose (cuz it sounds like the snot in there is what's making him cough), give him a drink of water, give him a berry-flavored cough drop & sit in the recliner w/ him until he falls asleep & doesn't cough for a while, then I put him back in bed. He's usually good for the night after that. I'm reading everyone's posts on here & it makes me not want to waste the money on taking him to the doctor just to get some "assumed" diagnosis & make him dependent on an expensive medicine when what I'm doing @ home seems to work just as well as any medicine & with no side effects. I don't know, tho...we'll see. Just thought some of you could benefit from this @ home solution, in case you're out of medicine & the doctor's office is closed or something. ;)

My 1 year old has just started doing this is the recent week. He has not be officially diagnosed with asthma, but the pedi is treating it as he has it. Around the same time every night he has a coughing fit that results in him throwing up phylem. It scares me cause I am worried he is going to choke on it. Our new pedi told me to try Claritin right before bed along with a homemade cough syrup. I hope this works cause I hate seeing my little guy suffer like this. Anyone have any luck with Claritin?

Albuterol helped my 2 & 1/2 years old... she was coughing and at first I thought she was choking then she went to throw up but only phylum came up.. then I thought she was having asthma so I gave her a puff of albuterol and 15 seconds later she was better and falling back to sleep... this was her first asthma attack.. she had a mild cold today.. maybe that is what triggered it

My son also developed bronchitis after he turned 2, after which he started coughing & was diagnosed with cough allergy or asthma. He was given the albuterol inhaler, then singulair, and also added claritin as needed.

I have started hylands complete allergy medicine-it is homeopathic so takes a while to start working but atleast its safe unlike all these strong meds. Also locally grown organic honey every night is very good for allergies too.

I think doctors might not know specifics, its better to get checked by a specialist.
