I have been dealing with the nightly cough too (nearly 4 y/o boy). Like many others here, I use a steamer at night and add a few drops of lavender oil or eucalyptus. I also give him a teaspoon of honey before going to bed (not with tea) and find these two things help enormously.
When things get bad though, like when he coughs several times a minute sometimes every 10 seconds (dry cough) I give him 200 CH aconitum, which is homeopathic and within 1/2 hr the cough goes away...
We are not sure why he has this, it just started about a month or two ago and very often he is congested even though the cough is dry. He hasn't mastered blowing his nose yet so sometimes when he lets me, I 'suck' out his nose with the bulb thingy and this really helps. Alternatively, flushing out the nose with saline solution and better yet, a combination of both. But this is hard to do to a half asleep, frustrated grumpy toddler.
FWIW, he eats organic, whole foods, rarely eats snacks never processed food, no cow milk (was breast fed until 2), I try to feed only organic meat the seldom occasions when we eat it, etc and he is not vaccinated. I mention this b/c a few people have connected this coughing with vaccinations/eating badly. I avoid antibiotics, heavy duty meds and anti-bacterial cleaning products, opting for vinegar, tea tree oil and baking soda.
We have pets (cats and dogs) but they don't sleep in his room and I vaccuum regularly with the windows open. I also leave the window cracked open at night since I understand cold air helps.
I wish I could offer solutions both to my son and others going through this, it is so hard. I do however recommend the teaspoon of straight honey before bed, the steamer (not humidifier as it collects bacteria and needs constant cleaning) and aconitum, which is amazing stuff (from the plant monkshood and it treats inflammation, influenza, and restlessness etc etc).

Hi I am a regular user on Steadyhealth and I am 18 years old. My son will be 2 in Febuary 2011 and for the last 2 months he has had this hideous cough and my husband and I dont know what else to do. I had to quit my job bc he got so sick and they were going to fire me if i took him to the hospital instead of coming into work. So I quit. But I have took him to the E.R. twice and to two different doctors. The E.R. said that he had an upper respiratory infection. The other said nothing is wrong his lungs sound fine, and the other doctor said :Oh he has allergies". Our son has been on 3 different medicines since the 2nd week in October. We got his flu shot a week ago while the coughing settled down but its back. But he does vomit alot while coughing because his gag reflexes are bad he will still his finger down his throat because he panics and wants it to be over with. But all that comes out is saliva, no mucus, no nothing. I dont know what else to do. Im tired of him being on medicines we have made him some hot honey lemon tea and that soothes him. But when 1am hits he coughs the rest of the night and then he wants to sleep during the day and then his sleeping schedule is all messed up. And with my husband having to be at work at 3am Im the one thats up with him and then with him all day. So needless to say Im tired and grumpy, not wiht my son but with this sickness and dumb docotrs that have a peice of paper but dont know what the hell there doing. Please answers would be appreciated!!!!!!!

Sometimes I feel Drs don't know anything they just try to pin the symptoms on something common, like asthma which may not be the problem in any of these children's cases. My Daughter has just turned 5, she has been getting these cough attacks for the past 4-5 months, just at night like all the kids above, sometimes it gets so bad that she vomits but then after that she is good (for that night). I just finished nursing school and I may not know much still but I think its just that all these children, well children in general, still have a weak immune system and this time of year all kinds of cold and flu viruses are going around an there is no way of preventing kids from getting these bugs. Also when we lie flat to sleep all the mucous drains to our throat, causing us to persistently cough and that is a reason why kids get this at night. The only advice I have is giving a good cough medicine only at night to suppress the cough to help the child sleep (they don't need the medicine during the day, coughing is one of our bodies defense mechanisms, but they do need sleep at night). Also no milk at bedtime, it just makes them more phlegmy, give a vapor bath before bed and make sure they eat healthy throughout the day to help boost the immune system. Basically I think as the children get older and the immune systems matures hopefully this problem will go away, or you can just go visit a million Drs until you find a answer and when you do let me know.

I agree with the last guest. I am also a nurse. And my family doc said mucous draining from the sinuses is the nimber 1 cause of night coughing

Just read a few posts, but have you seriously considered environmental factors like: smog, parental smoking, elevation, and cleanliness of home, daycare or nursery school? What about just adding a humidifier without a drug? What about making sure over stimulation or stress isn't the problem manifesting itself at night? Children handle stress much different than adults. People too easily turn to drugs and doctors when they can handle things themselves. Do what your child needs you to do!!! Quote:

do you have a sick child???????? because most of us on here do. If you have nothing uplifting to say to us parents who aren't getting sleep along with our children then just go away! We do the best we can!

My two toddlers girls now they are fine... They used to cough a lot during nights for 3 months. So, what I did was
1. Keep them warm- when it was time to sleep I will put them a sweater with their pants and socks.
2. Gave them honey.
3. Insted giving them milk at nights, I will give them a warm chamomile tea with honey.
4. I tried to avoid everything from colds; such as cold food.

What I noticed was that milk was the cause that they started to cough.
Don't get desperate moms, I completely understand your pain and frustration. During that time your baby needs you the most, just give them lots of love.

My 4 yr old daughter has had a night time stuffy nose and cough sense late NOV. it is now mid FEB. I remember the day it started; she had a low grade fever that lasted one day, and then the night time stuffy nose and cough started which has continued until know. 2 weeks ago took her to umc quick care, they said she had allergies and prescribed her, cough medicine with a sleep aid and a steroidal oral liquid. Not fully confident in the docs diagnosis we did not feel the prescriptions and instead have been battling this illness with natural remedies like vitamins, minerals, and herbs. I am not sure how long this will last, but I seem to be more worn out than my daughter.

Have just read all the stories and am "glad" to hear we are not the only ones suffering with this problem, although at the time it seems u are in it alone. We have been suffering with the coughing at nite for a year. It goes well for about 6 weeks and then the problem starts again. When does it end!!!! Our toddler is 2 and it looks like we will be suffering for another 2 years. Will try the Singular though and hope it works. We have also been through blood tests, etc and told its allergies and asthma, etc, but no one can tell it what it is. Will there ever be an answer?

Singulair isn't what I would call a long term cure all. I have been prescribed it for my own asthma, and while it works wonderfully for that it causes very noticble feelings of depression and at times severe headaches. There is no way I am putting my 4-year-old son on that regularly.

The cough appears in spring and fall, lasts intermittenly for a few weeks. Deslym cough syrup, a humidifier and some benedryl help, but are not fool proof.

***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed I am not endorsing kevin trudeau, but the things he says about are conventional food and how that food is causing are children to get ill have open my eyes to what I already felt in my gut. Sense I do try to by organic food for my family, I now only give my family organic food, and since my 4 year old daughter has ate mostly organic food and more vegetables (not willingly) her allergies have gone away. We need to stop giving are children these poison foods, if more of us bought organic food the price would go down and these huge food companies would fall in line and hopefully would stop poisoning us through the use of chemicals and these GMO products. Please please please take your kids of this poison food that is sold by these major corporations. I live in las vegas and we have a few health food stores like whole foods and trader Joe's. Though most major food chains now carry organic food products, they do not have nearly the variety of organic produce as a health food store. Personally there should not have to be food labeled organic. Isn't all food naturally organic? Unfortunately food labeled conventional or not labeled organic is a possible toxin that can make you sick.
