Hi I also have a 3 1/2 year old and from November till about May he will cough and cough so much that he will throw up. We have been on flonase, claritin, benedryl, robotussin dm, mucinex and now we are on zyrtec. My problem is as follows..he is coughing so much that I want to know if a toddler can have to much medicine. My other question is did anyone find any solutions to all the children that are suffering? I am about to get a third opinion. It breaks my heart to listen to him cough so much. I never know if its a throw up cough or if its a regular  cough. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Hello everyone,

While it is so comforting to know that I am not alone in my fight to find out what causes my son these awful symptoms, I am still at a loss...A loss of sleep, happiness, and I have feelings of helplessness. My two year old son also exhibits much of the same symptoms as other children throughout these posts. He has had a cough, mostly at night, for the last 6 months. He has reflux, and just had an endoscopy showing that he has acute gastritis, inflamation of stomach lining. He has had persistent ear infections, and he is on his 2nd set of ear tubes and had his adenoids (which I was told were "huge") removed two weeks ago. He is now on two doses of prevacid daily for his gastritis and reflux, I run a humidifyer at night, elevate his bed, he sleeps on a wedge, I dress his warm, he doesn't eat anything after 5pm, and so on, so on, and so on. He has been tested for allergies- negative...Yet still, his cough remains. He is sleep deprived, puffy eyed, cranky. What is left for me to do? My ped says that I just have to wait it out. Seriously?? Anyone else out there, what more can i do???

Hi had same problem for ages, top doctors chest clear, slight cold. Swapped milk for soya milk, not total dairy free don't though just milk, but he doesn't like milk or milky things anyway has crusha sugar free on his milk and prefers soya yogurt. Also we got air purifier (hf 200 from boots with 25 % off!) . Cough has gone! Not sure which one cured/helped but one happy family! Well worth trying both to see good luck!

If the hilistic doctor determined that by looking at her history I think that is pretty amazing and I would go by her recommendation no matter how difficul. Where is this holistic doctor located, I would love for her to look at my granddaughter

Hi all,
My 4-yr old also coughs at night, often until he vomits. Our Dr has recently started talking about asthma and has prescribed salbutamol inhalers but I'm no longer convinced that's the answer - the reason being that when recently visiting my parents I came across the 10th March 2012 edition of the BMJ (British Medical Journal, dad is a retired GP), which has a 7-page special on 'childhood coughs'. Whilst this article is aimed at doctors rather than parents I'd urge you all to read it, at the very least it'll help you to understand where your Dr is coming from - and it covers all the causes/treatments.
Seriously - read the article, could change your perspective (it did mine).

My daughter (now 4) has had "night coughs" on and off for the last 2 years. When she was 2 she saw an allergist who was certain she has asthma. He prescribed many different meds including using a breathing machine every night w/ a Med that could possibly not only stunt her growth but also cause her to lose her sense of taste! Really?! Needless to say I not only DID NOT give her the meds, she didn't do breathing treatments either, and it all subsided. Well here we r 2 years later (yes, I'm laying here awake due to her. coughing) and she still has sporadic coughing spells. For the last 2 years it hasn't really been much of an issue, just comes and goes. I never got a definite answer on wht causes this but I can say I am happy w my decision to not put all those meds in her little body when apparently either way we wld have the prob. These last few months she's been having random nose bleeds (as did I as a child). Believe it or not this is all linked to the nasal cavity. The coughing seems to happen anytime "there's something in the air" which causes her nasal cavity to "feel dry" which causes her to take Short rapid breaths (hense the coughing". Also causing nose bleeds (from the pressure from coughing and dryness). I'm def not a doc but I have learned repetition over the years. Regardless, it still breaks my heart to hear my baby coughing like that. I hope this helps!

I am having the same problem with my 6 year old we have tried everything. He was on singulair and qvar for almost a year, after tge experience we had with the singulair i would NOT recommend it.to anyone my son was aggressive and angry when he was on it.We took him off of it about a month ago and what a difference in his behavior. it did help with the coughing a little bit, now the.cough is back but putting him back on the meds is not an option. we are waiting to get him tested for asthma since they can not test until age 6 anyone know of a homeopathic remedy i could try

This is almost a word for word decription of how my sons condition is. My son is 2 and a half. He started the coughing last month. Usually it only happens after he has been asleep for some time. He has GERD , dog allergies and Asthema so the doctors have been telling us it's related... We got rid of the pets a year ago and have been running hepa filters in the vacuum and HVAC. His asthema medications do not stop the cough. Allergy medication did not affect the issue. His cough has the same description yours does dry cough starting during sleep and once it starts it doesn't stop for at least an hour. Once he coughs too much he vomits mucus and saliva. Like he was having a reflux moment. His Refluxes usually happen quickly and without the cough. His lungs sound clear and fine with no asthema wheeze or cracle like fluids in his lungs. We have a stethescope due to his being born with esophogeal atresia so I'm not just guessing there. This is frustrating us all as he can't sleep and so we can't sleep and then once he settles we spend an hour or so worrying about him. His doctors are simmilarly clueless as to the actual cause. I amd going to try the vaporizer, honey and am going to research the aconitum Olive recoomends.

I had the same problem with my 2 yr old son. At night he had a severe cough. He would cough so hard that he would rock his toddler bed. I give him a homeopathic cough syrup called Chestal. I buy it from the health food store and it works wonders. I also give it to him during the day if he has a really bad cold and a lot of mucous. You can read more about it on childrenschestal.com and consult your physician. These blogs and websites are a great idea. I am a concerned parent who doesn't want their kid on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals for the rest of his life. As parents we need to press the medical community and the FDA to provide sufficient information about the long term effects of shots (immunizations) on our children. I would encourage other parents to seek alternative natural remedies to treat and cure any and all maladies. We should keep our options open.

I'm having this problem with my little one. he is three 1/2. He has had this since he was just months old.. maybe around 6 months or a little older, but it just sends me into a panic, and its not constant. Sometimes I'll hear it every night, other times I'll hear it a few nights a week...... not really a pattern. However this cough is like a long hard gasp for air, then a hard dry cough. I often catch him almost 'chewing' afterwards, I've checked his mouth, sat him up, woke him up, watched him, I've done everything. When I asked the Dr. He tells me he does not think it's any of the 'coughs' children develop that need attention or anything alarming. He thinks it's simply mucus that is breaking down and maybe getting caught or tickling the throat triggering a cough.... It only happens a max of three times within a thirty min period, once a night, but never at any other time than when he is asleep but it sounds SOOO SCARY....... Im thinking allergy specialist or 2nd (or more) opinion, but is anyone else having this same cough in their children??

Hi, My nearly 4 yrs old boy has the same problem, the coughing gets worse at nights, we used to give him ibuprofen as well and it helps, not sure why, but it does help, but then we thought its not good to keep giving him everyday, then we stopped, at the moment, we are giving him inhaler prescribed by doctor, which sometimes helps sometimes don't, also using humidifier in the room, little helpful, i would like to try singulair, will have to ask doctor myself, because i know they will not prescribe it until they are told(in UK for sure).
