I had my tonsils out 26/2/2010..at the age of 17.
Reading all these comments freaked me out. To be honest it's not as bad as it sounds.
A week before the operation you have a pre-assessment. Here you have, blood pressure checked, blood test, height and weight measured, swab tests. These tests just confirm you're fit for the operation and the hospital staff know how much antibiotics to give you.
On the day of your operation you have your blood pressure checked and meet with your surgeon.
Once thats over you get your anastetics done. Believe me I was scared but it's only a little pinch and then you're asleep :-)
You're knocked out for maximum 45minutes. Waking up after the operation may seem abt daunting, but within 5minutes you're fine again.
15minutes after the operation I was able to talk as normal.
At the hospital they make you drink and eat something and go to the toilet. Once you've done that your free to go!! :-D
I felt abit weak on my journey home, however I ate something with my antibiotics.
The 2nd day after my throat was getting sore however I was still able to talk. The third and fourth day is the worst. Just make sure you keep having liquids and eat small amounts every hour or two.
On the third day I had moved on to the tremedol. This was no good for me as it gave me a very bad tooth ache which meant I had to suffer even more. By the fifth day I was no longer sleeping all the time. I was able to move around without feeling weak straight after.
It's coming up to 6months since I've had my operation and I believe it was worth it!! I had suffered from tonsilitis, chest infection and viral infection every three months for 4 years and finally my doctors gave in and told me to have the operation.
For those that are abit reluctant of having the operation for whatever reason..ignore all the negative things you may have heard it is not that bad. The more you worry the more you feel the pain.
Before you get better the pain gets worse..however that pain is not unbearable..just continue to have plenty of liquids and eat small amounts regularly.
All the best to anyone that are having their tonsils out :-D
Let me know if you have any questions!
