My 18 year old daughter had a tonsillectomy 8 days ago, and it's been a horrible experience watching her go through so much pain, but the only thing keeping us going is hearing the good news stories from people who had them years ago and have had no issues since and are thankful they had it done. All I can say is follow all the instructions followed by the specialist. eg; take pain killers 4 hours, and wake up during the night to keep the pain medications regular (even if you think you may not need it) as it helps overall to keep the pain at a constant level. My daughter suffered shocking nausea from the narcotic pain killer (endone) so we were in a routine of having anti-nausea, followed by food, followed by pain meds and anti inflammatory meds. She was also on antibiotics. Pretty much a medicine bottle rattling around in her for days. Chewing gum seemed to help the extremely painful ear pain she had. The ondansetron wafer (taken a while before meds and food) helped the nausea better than maxalon. She only weighs 50kg, so the drugs knocked her around alot and she slept heaps. We got stuck into the scratchy foods day 2,3,4, (toast, toasted sandwiches cereal) as well as soft icecream, jelly etc. Day 5 - 7 were the worst, so mainly soft foods then. Day 8, and the pain meds have reduced to half and now only needed about 5 - 6 hourly, and slowly getting an appetite back, the ear pain bad a the moment, so chewing between meals as advised by the specialist which seems to be helping. She has had a water bottle at her side from the day she left hospital, and I've encouraged her to take sips very regularly, especially during the night, as 0300 and 0600 is when she is waking me with the most pain (so drug her up, knock her out and back to sleep) The anti-nausea meds have a bonus effect of making her sleepy too, so the combination with the pain killers meant she slept alot for the first 6 day. We are confident things are going as they are supposed to but definately advised 2 full weeks of pain to be expected (with day 5 - 7 beeing the worst)..
