I love to think and love Mathematics. But racing thoughts do not let me concentrate. I have this problem since long. Both bipolar and racing thoughts. For me following things helped. But this things again come back when I am alone for long. 1> Interact with people as much as you can. 2> Try to sleep as much as possible( even with some mild sleeping pills for 2/3 days. After that no more sleeping pills will be required). 3> Try your best recreation (be it travelling, listening to music) Take care....

i have the same problem and i guess a lot of people do

some people use caffeine to clear their mind but i do not think it  always works . beside i have something called tinnitus that forced me not to have caffeine any more

i spent  a lot  of time trying something that clear my mind as the problem that a lot of people told me i am very smart and maybe genius but not controlling my own  brain made me fail in a lot of simple tasks . and that is extremely annoying .. i literally call it the hell in mind

here somethings that helped me and made my life a possible  activity

- counting . i call it the magic of numbers - and it is sorted among yoga   and meditation exercises too - and some people use reversed counting if they have trouble in bed trying to sleep . they count slowly from 100 to 1 as that distract the brain from other thoughts   - specially negative ones  - into a simple and clean process  .. i have other forms of counting too like counting my steps while walking and that is very useful to start the walking exercise as it encourage me  and it is like the ignition spark . i also do closing my eyes , talking a deep breath and count from 10 to 1 .. it is a famous  exercise and u can repeat it

- being upside down . making the blood go toward the head is very useful as it is like feeding your brain  . yoga some  exercises about that like standing on the head or on the arms upside down . a similar and better exercise is the prostrations especially the one done by Muslims in prayers as it is the most comfortable one among all other sorts and need no fitness so any one can do it .

- closing the eyes . with a zero intention of sleeping . i do it and some times walks in house trying not hit any thing . i do it also and i imagine that the darkness i see is the outer space . and i follow what my brain draws . you will get surprise what you could see if you have a wide imagination

i hope i helped

Hi... You have found the answer already for your problem! The last sentence of your 5th paragraph has the answer. However, I like to add as below: You have not mentioned your age, gender, marital status etc. If we know these information, it is is easier to provide the solutions. From your statement, I simply guess that you have many plans for your future but yet not able to draw the clarity. If you are in the age group of 18-25, then your problems are not worrying one. When days go you will be able to settle down mentally with the maturity in your thoughts. If this short reply gives you some energy, we can surely share more. Best regards, .

Hi I have to say this is the most sensible reply I read. I too have very similar symtoms as you do and reading a book or playing a game does help a bit, as it allows you to stay focused long enough to break the cycle of all the things running around in your head. However I've been like this for years and my brain have some how grown immune to this strategy. Even while reading or playing I still have a million different, unrelated thoughts in my head. Now I suck at gaming where I used to be good. Drugs is not the answer. good luck!

Most of you consider your "issue: as a problem. in fact you are blessed. what you are going through is a GOOD THING, assuming you are looking at it correctly....

Basically, what is happening is that your brain is "racing" only du to the fat that it is capable of ...racing...e,g,, your brains are capable of "producing" more "traffic" per given moment. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, unles...you consider it "wrong". In fact, as mentiond earlier it is a BLESSING. the key is to IDENTIFY it as a...BLESSING and control it. You need to be able (as some of the replies here susggested)to PRIORITIZE your thoughts, and give them "value" as you think them. The only thing that would help you GREATLY ro acheive a full control of it would be HAVING A PLAN for your life, short of long term, however short or long. As long as you have a minute by minute sort of direction, then SCREENING OFF the "noise" becomes very easy. it will take some practice but eventually you will feel empowered.

There are much deeper meanings to the the racing thoughts, spiritul and methaphysical, however, without getting "too heavy" on the topic,  if you look at your "problem" correctly...it is a good problem. it identifies you as a bright person (wih high capacity engine-brain), or at least as a potentilly bright person. of course, your ability to manage your "brightness" is the key, as we all know than many "smart people" have lost it. Life is fun, and if you have a "racaing brain" you have greater potential to make it life. last but now least. Please DROP all the misused terms that the FAILING field of psychology had produced over the years, which is none other than their own failure to understand their own profession. most of the psychologists, about 99% of them are complete m****s, unless they are trained in the NLP field to begin with (although this is only the starting point, as there are much higher level than NLP today) . Terms such as BIPOLAR, ADD, AHAD etc. are none but a "manufactured" "disease" terms which were" invented" by industry of complete and limited m***n individuals...yes I am referring to the "shrinks", which should mean people with shrunken brains.... Enjoy your day

I don't believe it's ADD or ADHD I have had this ongoing for 20 years. I'm on medication that stopped working. I have lost contact with friends, and try to avoid family. I stay inside all the time, I have nothing but depressing and negative thoughts. As for seeing a psychiatrist I have been waiting over a year. You cannot stop thoughts that come into your mind. All I do is sleep. Seeking mental health if you can might help. Best wishes as I'm at a loss. Being a 41 year old female I so thought my life would have changed by now :(

I have the same thing! I always have and have had dozens of thoughts all at once and all pulling on me until I can' get anything done. I start one thing after another and just leave them to start another. I have dozens of projects going on and can't focus on any one to finish any of them. Hope you find answer for all of us! I have read some on low latent inhibition. It is the closest thing I can find to describe it.

Hey Buddy,

There seem to be many suggestions and extensive replies above. Some of them may be comprehensive and may be of use of it. I am sorry I was not able to go through each and every reply and just thought that I will pen down what would be my advice to you.

As a first step, I will recommend to take it easy. Stop blaming yourself for not being able to concentrate, stop feeling guilty that you are under-performing. According to your analysis, you may be under-performing when you would be comparing it to the benchmarks you have set, but then if you keep worrying about it, its not going to help. What would help instead is the decision to help yourself to come out of the situation. There are medicines and therapies that may help you, I am not qualified enough to comment on that. Yes, I surely can assure you that if you create a assess-plan-act-assess process for yourself, you will be able to easily quantify the improvements made in yourself and then you will feel start feeling good about yourself. Believe me my friend, when you start feeling good about yourself, things will change for good, and the changes will happen at a better pace.

.. All the best

Try to focus on the day, and that one day only. Obviously at a certain age you become busy where your working and your trying to take care of yourself. You have all these thoughts everyday, so think about focusing on what your doing now. If your watching television focus on what your watching, if your working focus on work only or ect. Nothing else matters. Only today matters. I hope that made sense an if it does i hope it helps! I still struggle with it but when i do it, I get in a zone.

Hi Fatjoe,

I just got diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) a few weeks back and I'm 39 years old!!!  I'm also in Australia.  That means something as the doctors here aren't as keen to diagnose you with ADHD than probably the States.

Big relief for me as I thought I had everything from depression to anxiety and was thinking bipolar (because of the racing busy thoughts).  I quite like my ADHD and haven't been treated yet as trying to get pregnant.  I do take antidepressants though and they help a lot for calmness as they treat anxiety.  Embrace your ADHD and know you're probably a highly creative, intelligent (or just fast) person.  Avoid all drugs and alcohol like the plague though.  Been down that track and you'll end up with more problems.  Coffee is cool though.

Cheers, Casey Girl.

You should go see a psychiatrist and do a IQ test .
Chances are that you are Highly intelligent , even though the word makes no sense .
It just means that you have a different stream of thoughts then the average person .

Go check it up , u got nothing to loose .
And the fact of KNOWING , changes everything .

What you thought was your personality is actualy just the symptoms ADD. The medication is very effective and you'll be very gratefull. Find an ADD screening test on the web and take it.
