Hi June
Yes, that is what I thought initially - then I thought my stomach sac was pushing up into my lungs. It is scary, and it would be a great relief to a lot of us is some-one could actually tell us what is really going on!
I am sure we are not all imaging it!

I am a 24 year old female and for almost 6 months I can relate somewhat. I have had trouble with going to the bathroom all my life. I went to the doctor and explained the type of pain I would get in my stomach. The pain was excruciating. I start to feel like I have to go to the bathroom and feel nauseous. The pain is located mostly in the my upper abdomen and radiates up my back. The pain gets so bad that I feel like I have to sit down or lose my breath. Sometimes, I have to vomit but other times the spasms will go away. The doctor said it was due to maybe IBS. As time went on, I noticed the pains would only come when over indulging in my works out especially with my sit up routines. I would work really hard on the abs and become VERY VERY sore. After a few days or a week, I would start to get the spasms again. I have never taken anything for this but wait till it just subsides. After the pain does, I am pretty sore for about a couple of days. I recently went to the doctor and they did a CT scan and everything came back normal. How are you doing with it now?

Hi mine really are not painful , as such. Just really uncomfortable. Like a knot or spasm that pushes up under my left ribs. Have not had it for a few weeks but i try not to do anything - like sit-ups etc which will certainly bring it on.

My problem started right after my gall bladder surgery. Especially when I eat, but has happened at other times. I have an extreme spasm in the center of my chest that radiates around to my back, affecting my entire chest, back and sides, it will last around 1 minute, if it lasted longer I'd have to call 911 as I feel as if I can't breath. I have had every test & procedure since it all started and they can't find a cause. I just had a Nuclear Stress Test for my Heart, it was normal. I am sure that something happened when they did the ERCP to remove my stones before the surgery. I had a GI bleed after the ERCP and ended up in the hospital for 3 days and had to have 2 units of blood transfused. I am not sure if it was the ERCP or the surgery but I was normal before then. It has been over 3 1/2 years and I am still suffering.

I am 25 years old and have been getting these spasms more and more regularly since i had my son nearly 4 years ago. i wondered if it had something to do with that as i had to have an emergency c section. i also wondered if it was connected to marfan's syndrome as i also have this. it can be terribly painful and feels like my abdomen cramps up like a concertina, the only way to relieve it i find is to stretch out as far as i can, or lie flat on the floor. i'm glad to know i'm not the only one.

Ditto! I think I am going to get my gallbladder out..no stones, but only working 30 percent..But the spasms are crazy..in my right and left side when I bend over, or laugh sometimes..it is so painful..takes a few minutes to subside.

It has been awhile since I posted here, but after months of the doctors shrugging their shoulders I finally have an answer.... my pain was caused by my pancreas. I have had two really bad attacks of Acute Pancreatitis the last two weeks. This is usually caused by a bad gall bladder, or alcohol. Had my gall bladder checked and it wasn't that... usually people that are HEAVY drinkers have this, but I am a social wine drinker on weekends and this looks to be the probable cause. Never could figure out why I would get sick on Tuesdays, feel bad for a few days, get better, have a couple of glasses of wine on the weekend and start the same cycle over again. I went crazy eliminating wheat, gluton, dairy etc. from my diet trying to find the cause of the HORRIBLE left upper abdominal pain I would have. I could cause the spasms by bending over or sneezing too. I was in the ER every week for two months and am still not over the hump. I have lost over 20 pounds and may have done irreversable damage to my pancreas. It wasn't until I was hospitalized two weeks ago for my first case of AP that an ER dr. told me my problem was probably related to alcohol! I have seen two Gastro docs in the last 4 months and countless ER drs. No one connected the dots. If my story sounds like yours, STOP drinking and see if it helps! I will never have another DROP of alcohol again! AP is SERIOUS stuff!

Need to add that I had several CT Scans, as well as an abdominal ultrasound... all showed everything normal. High Lipase count is how mine was discovered. Looking back over the last several months my Lipase has been on the "high normal" side (all in the 200 to 300 range) which the one ER dr. told me was suspicious as it should have ideally been under 100. My lipase was in the 800range when I was hospitalized. It came down fairly quickly though so one could have an attack and not seek help for days, only to find that their lipase count is in the "high normal" range and doctors will ignore it. I accepted the diagnosis of IBS even though I am 58 years old and have not had IBS since I was in my 40's! I finally just kept going back to the ER and after 6 weeks or so BINGO! I was beginning to think I was crazy even though I have been a very healthy and active person my entire life!

Acute Pancreatitis is NOT uncommon after having an ERCP. Have you had your pancreas checked? See my post below.

hi Sharon
i am not sure your condition woukld be the same as mine. i don't have pain as such, more just really uncomfortable spasm in my upper left abdomianl area - feels like kicking or my bowel twisting. last from maybe 15 seconds to about 2 minutes .just very uncomfortable. and visable when it is moving. Have had them for years now then Mine was 2 months ago, then Tuesday evening so I am going to start monitoring when they happen. I think - not sure though -that taking bio-magnesium may be helping.

Hi Terri,
Mine started out last October sort of like what you are describing. One doc told me what I was feeling was poo moving through my bowels and that is what it felt like. I think it was a combination of food not being properly digested because of undiagnosed pancreatitis (pancreas provides digestive enzymes) as well as my pancreas having spasms. All I know is that in my case, my pancreas ended up being the culprit and not a single doctor even suggested that could be the problem. Look up pancreatic problems and see what other people have to say. I think I have suffered from an alcohol sensitivity for years and finally my pancreas had enough! I am definitely NOT a heavy drinker, yet alcohol appears to be the cause of my problem. Time will tell though... I am still not out of the woods and the cause of my AP may not end up being alcohol... who knows! But, if you DO drink, I would suggest abstaining for a few months to see if that makes a difference. Good luck!

Hi Sharon
I do drink, red wine every evening. I still cannot see the connection to pancreatitis -when I consider I have had this occuring for quite a few years now, hasn't gotten worse or more frequent. Sometimes months go by and sometimes twice in a week. i am really happy with this forum though, it feels like , between us all we may get to the bottom of it! I quit smoking 12 months ago....not sure if i want to give up my red wine. (I am 60and in Australia - where are you?)

Hi Terri,
We have written to each other before! I am 58 and live in California. I was really upset when first told the probable cause of my AP, but after missing work for a month and still ending up in the ER, I am OVER it! I have read a LOT of stories similar to mine. Once your pancreas is diseased, things can be pretty gloomy. I have a hunch your pancreas is giving you warning. Some people have very little pain with this Terri, but they still end up damaging their pancreas. Just a thought... I will definitely miss my social wine drinking with friends and hubby, but in the big picture... not a big deal!
