It sounds to me like you have interstitial cystitis. It took my OB/GYN and a regular urologist who thought it was all in my head to send me to a specialist who deals with interstitial cystitis. Not all urologists know about it and treat it. I have to travel 2 hours to go see the specialist every 3 months. There are meds for the condition but no treatment. It is a chronic disease and causes pain during sex and other times your bladder will flair up and you just can't do anything. You need to talk to your OB/GYN and let him/her schedule an apptointnment with a urologisty who specializes in Interstitial cystitis. I wish you luck!

My problem first started when I went on holiday with my boyfriend last year. I found that intercourse was very painful and I experienced pain when urinating and just a general burning sensation down there. As soon as I got back from my holiday I went straight to my doctor who I gave a urine sample to and the Doctor gave me some antibiotics. After my visit to the doctor the pain went a away for a while but not fully. A little while later the pain came back again (exactly the same as before) so off I went to the doctors again and this time the doctor said I didn't have a water infection, the doctor thought I could have an STI, the doctor didn't examine me or anything, she just told me to book and appointment with the sexual health clinic. So off i go to the sexual health clinic and there I got tested for STI's. My results all came back negative (which i knew they would). The doctor at the sexual health clinic gave me a tablet as she thought it could be thrush. So i took the tablet and again the pain went (but not completely). After all of this my boyfriend suggested that i might not be lubricated enough so we went out and got some lube. I still had pain during intercourse and slightly after but not to bad. While all of this was going on i was diagnosed with depression and started to see a Councillor. I decided that my BC pill could have been making the depression worse so I started on a BC pill of 20 micro-grams instead of 30. Then a few months later my boyfriend left me. After our relationship ended I had no sexual intercourse and I had no pain at all. Then about a month ago I started dating a guy and the first time we had intercourse I found it so painful. I knew something was seriously wrong so i went to the doctors right away. The doctor i was seeing was an hour behind on appointments so when I went in I kept the story short and she diagnosed me with BV so I got given a course of antibiotics for a week. During this week I didn't have any intercourse and when I did again it was still painful. I'm scared of having intercourse again because it hurts so much, before and after. I feel like the doctors aren't taking my pain seriously. I just want to find out what the problem is so that i can try and fix it and have pleasurable intercourse.

If you are having painful intercouse it could be vaginismus which is an involuntary spasm of the pc muscles which make intercouse painful or even impossible as the muscles can squeeze so tightly they can close the vagina. It is both psychological and physical - google vaginismus and by the kit and go and see a sex therapist to talk you through it. Vaginismus can have absolutely no cause. So may be worth a go.

Vestibulitis, Vulvodynia, and Urethral Pain

Many of you are describing things I have experienced. The above link may help you find more information that deals with what many of you are writing about. I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis (IC) in the late 1980s. Sex was difficult. My bladder always hurt and the frequency was making me crazy. It felt like a ball of electrically charged barbed wire rolling around in my bladder. I went through numerous treatments because there is no cure - yet. They can only treat the symptoms. They have gotten better with development of treatments to help women and men who suffer from this. You need to go to a urologist who is knowledgeable about IC. If you don't know where to turn, look at the nearest medical center tied to a university to see what doctors are researching this. You could go there or ask if they know of someone who may be closer to you that they would recommend.
Good resources : Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, University of Michigan.
I was fortunate that I went into remission with IC after I got pregnant with my first child. Though later I developed Vulvodynia, and Urethral Pain particularly during sexual intercourse.
I have gone to the University of Michigan Center for Vulvar Diseases to receive treatment. There are many things that can be done to help with the symptoms. But somethings that work for one patient won't work the same way for another patient. So you have to test things and work with a knowledgeable doctor you trust. It is not in your head, but the pain and discomfort can cause anxiety, depression, and other problems that may need to be treated along with any of these pain issues.
In general the IC network is a good reference for support and self education:

A significant number of people suffer from both disorders: Vulvodynia and Interstitial Cystitis, but you aren't alone and there are treatments out there that can improve your quality of life and reduce or eliminate your pain.
