I had the Mirena put in 2008 for endometriosis stage 4, first i had severe joint and bone pain, then i went to a totally clean eating way of life which seemed to help, all along the way i have had recurrent vaginosis and spotting, itching and pain everything as everyone here has posted. I really want to get this thing out but I am afraid of the endometriosis - this being the last treatment for it. It seems though now the merina is with every month not working the more time goes by. My periods seem to be getting more consistant and flowing and when that happens the itching and the burning and pain is unbearable i just do not know what is worse, abdominal pain like your going to die from endo ( or you just want to die ) or incessant itching that drives you absolutely insane??? In any event I many have this out, see a different dr and just have lap surgery and burn off the scar tissue as my body does not like this mirena.....

I am so happy that people are brave enough to put this information out there for all to read. I too have had the vaginal itching and burning (probably from the tearing of flesh when I scratch) and have had the Mirena for about a year and a half. I know that I do not have an STD because I have not had intercourse since the Mirena was inserted and that is when the symptoms started. I thought for some reason I had become allergic to myself because the itching was so intense. I still get my period monthly and still have cramping with my period. My migraines have also returned and I have gained 25 lbs. I will be calling me doctor to have this thing removed ASAP!!

I also have the same symptoms and have had me going crazy. Too embarassed to do anything with my husband or wondering if he was giving me STD's. I would hope he's faithful. At first, when I had the Mirena put in I bled like crazy and then every month during my period I would have this brownish discharge, very disgusting. Then I would start to chaf from the pads I would have to use because the tampons would irritate me. Now I itch and have a very heavy irritating phlegm like discharge and I think it has everything to do with the Mirena. My doctoe told me to eat yogurt and drink more water. But ladies I sympathize. I never had any problems like this until I got the Mirena, but I love the protection because I certainly cannot afford another baby right now.

I just had Mirena put in on 01/26/2010 and it is now 01/27/2010. I noticed yesterday after they put it in that I was itching really bad. I woke up this morning and the itching has gotten worse and is followed with burning. They think I have an infection and I got some antiobiotics. But after reading all this it sounds like it happens all the time. The more I read from people that have it I see more bad things about it then good. I think I'm going to get it removed if It doesn't get any better. I feel all your pain and I've only had it 2 days.

I have suffered all these symptoms for 5 years, this copper coil is due to come out in two months and NOW I see this, thank you so much for sharing it. It's invaluable to me and it gives me hope that after taking it out the burning and itch will stop and my vulva will return to it's normal size...now that would be nice, but the nicest thing of all is to know WHY. How can all the doctors I have seen not know about this?. If it was men that suffered with this burning and itching they would have done something about it I am sure.
If you want to continue using the copper coil, I found through many trials that frequent washing throughout the day and applying virgin (organic certified/cold pressed)coconut oil helped keep the skin stronger, it works better than anything else I tried, don't get yeast obsessed like I did, it could be there's copper invading the perfect environment of your vagina, not yeast, consider it. Personally I have read enough and I will get rid of this coil as soon as I get an appointment.
Thank you!

Hi All,
Nice to see some information on other Mirena problems. I have had my Mirena in for about 2 1/2 years now but over the past 9 months I have had 5, yes I said 5 yeast infections. Stubborn ones too with tons and tons of itching, I am currently with one for 3 weeks now and just starting to get some relief. I was at my Dr's the other week getting tested for everything from pre-menopause to STD's (STI's). The results came back all fine except for my pap which showed a high yeast count but I have no discharge just tons and tons of itching and burning. I now believe it is my Mirena as I have never had this kind of history with yeast infections in my life and I am 40 years old. The more I read all your stories the more I am convinced that I need mine out. Only problem is that my stings were cut too short too and they retracted into my cervix so I can't just go to my Dr's office to get it out I have to have a hospital visit booked for me. UGGHHHHH, I'm so over this Mirena thing and know exactly what I am going to go for next.............the NUVARING!!
Good Luck to all you young ones trying to get pregnant again and to all you other sufferers, you are not crazy, you just have a Mirena.
lol

I have been on mirana for about a month now. Let me tell you this is something. At first I didn't really know what was going on. One morning I had very uncomfortable sex, and it hurt and I was itching afterwards. Then I kept getting a discharge. Sometimes the discharge would have an order. Now that I have my cycle the itching and burning is really horrible. I have already taken some Monistat 7 and it gave me no relief. I am not sure how women keep this in, but I know I am going to call my doctor to get this taken out. This is the most unbearable thing. It makes you feel like you have a yeast infection or a very bad STD. They need to improve this and let you know the true side effects before they put it back on the market.

Hi,
I had itching and resulting soreness of the vulva for months. The itching would actually stop me from sleeping sometimes. I was treated for various things as mentioned in other posts, but got no relief (except temporary relief from thrush cream, which I suspect was only due to the soothing ingredients in the cream rather than because I had any actual thrush to treat). I also asked for a full set of STD tests as a last resort. All negative. Finally I was diagnosed with ecsma down there and given steroid and moisturising cream. Both gave temporary short term relief (again probably due to their anti infammitary and soothing properties rather than because I had ecsma). From the very beginning (well once I realised it wasn't thrush anyway), I believed that it was a symptom of a nasty smelling discharge I got as a sude effect if having the mirena coil inserted. I had it removed a few days ago, and symptoms have already lessoned. I have sensitive skin, and I think that the discharge produced as a side effect of the Mirena, just irritated the skin on my vulva. I don't think doctors even consider this a possibility tbh.

Hi! i also just got the mirena iud about 4 months ago. i was treated for bv. I have really bad itching and a cuts around my vagina. I shaved with a dull razor a day or so before i noticed the cuts and itching. the cuts are all along the areas i shave so i was thinking its from shaving but i also have been bleeding a little from the inside and sometimes its brown. I've been putting neosporin on it for about 4 days now with no change. i was worried its herpes but i have no fever, head ache, swollen lymphnodes, ect. The cuts are mostly on my libia. The symptoms i have now are completely different from the symptoms i had when i was diagnosed with bv. help. is it herpes????

I got a mirena 8 months ago, and so far it's been really wonderful.
I did go off the pill after over 15 years of taking it, tho, and lately i've been extremely dry, have had painful sex and itching, much like many of you are writing about. I went to my doctor, thinking I must have BV or yeast, but she thinks that instead its my body's reaction to the withdrawal of estrogen.
I was taking the pill, so I was taking a daily dose of estrogen. Now, my body just has the estrogen it makes itself, plus the progestin the mirena releases. I get BV and yeast infections easily, so it was a concern when I started using the IUD, but i haven't had any problems except for this. My doctor has prescribed an estrogen cream to treat the dryness. She wants me to use it a bit more often than every other day for a couple of weeks, then thinks that I can use it once or twice a month as needed and I'll be back to what I'm used to. Its been only a week and the external itching has all but stopped and the internal symptoms seem to be easing.
