Heyy, I have had similar problems. I've had a history of yeast infections but about a month after I got the Mirena I was sexually active and my vagina swelled up really bad. It stayed that way for atleast 24 hours, I put ice on it but it didnt make much of a difference. I havn't had the swelling since, it has been over a year since that happened. I just recently found out I have cysts on my ovaries...then last night my boyfriend and I had sex. After sex I realized my vagina was swollen again...I started to think maybe its from the cysts on my ovaries? Or maybe because last week I thought I had a yeast infection, I treated it and it went away but now I am swollen and itchy. Reading all these comments has help put my mind at ease about the cysts on the ovaries I am convinced it is due to the Mirena. My vagina has only swollen since I've had that in there. I was wondering why these "yeast infections" were becoming so frequent. I have two children and am scared to take the Mirena out because I am horrible with the pill and I really dont want another child. Two is enough lol...but I dont think I can deal with this swelling much longer...

So I'm too experiencing a lot of these symptoms - negative STD testing, positive bacterial vaginosis (treated and it all went away... temporarily), brown spotting, odor and itchiness. I had my mirena IUD installed exactly a year ago and my question to you ladies is, is there a way to get rid of all of this but keep my mirena??! Because so far all posters have got it removed.... any alternative suggestions?

I have the same exact unbearable itchy vulva. It itches so bad that I have to scratch it. As a result of the scratching it becomes swollen and irritated. When I have sex with my husband I'm always dry and that makes the symptoms worse. I have light spotting and sometimes I have a REALLY painful cramping out of nowhere even when I'm not spotting. I hate Mirena. Google this and you will find many stories like yours MIRENA SIDE EFFECTS don't go to the official site go the others. I recently discovered this site about Mirena users and how they are trying to start a State Action lawsuit against them. There are crazy side effects many women are getting as a result of the IUD. I want to get mine taken out but I have no insurance now. It's a long wait until that day.

i have the same exact problem, and i too don't have insurance anymore to be able to take it out, ugh. it gets so bad sometimes rubbing alcohol is the ONLY thing that will make the itching stop, it burns like hell but it makes it stop because i go crazy itching.

i had the mirena coil inserted in 1september 2010 because of heavy periods. on the 7th i started what i thought was my period which lasted approximately four months in length. i went from doctor to doctor and they all said teh same thing. its to early to say its not working so give it a chance. ive had severe pain in my belly since my insertion aswell. ive had maybe 3 months in the entire year and a half of having this in where ive not bled. ive become anemic and now have a b12 deficiency and im loosing my hair like theres no tomorrow. ive no energy and feel pretty shoddy everyday i get the same itiching and brown discharge and i cant have sex because its not worth bleeding for another 3months afterwards. i honestly thought with all the hype that is put into these things that my life was about to change well i wish id never had it put in because having a period every two weeks seems like heaven compared to what im currently going through.

I've had a Mirena IUD for 1 year now.  The first 6 months were troublesome, bleeding, mood swings, back pain.  I ended up on antibiotics after the intial insertion as I came down with a high fever.  After six months I was treated for bacterial infection, which took 5 days.  After that things cleared up and now a year later, things are pretty good and my periods are lighter, sex drive is very good and I love not having to worry about birth control.  BTW I am 45 years old.

I know this is old, but am hoping you check this. I was on the IUD after I had my son. About 6 months after i got on it I started getting UTI's (urinary tract infection) I got them every couple of weeks especially in the fall through spring months. I went to urinologist and everything. No one could tell me why I was having this problem. We ruled out sex and everything else. So I started doing my own research. I asked Doctors if it could be from the IUD and they said it wasn't possible. Well, my research told me that many other women have had similar issues. Some of them had it removed anyways and sent them to be checked. E-coli was found growing on some. Needless to say after over 2 years of UTI's I was ready to try anything, and the thought of having E-coli growing inside me. I removed the IUD and have not had a UTI since. Good luck!

Hi ladies,

I have had the Mirena since January. I am currently treating myself for a bacterial infection. I am not having any itching thank god, but as I am a Naturopathic student I have tried natural measures and it is working!! Please go out and buy yourself a good quality probiotic from a health food store and take one capsule at bedtime this will ensure there is a good amount of good bacteria in the vagina to help fight off any infections both bacterial and yeast!! Another product for the relief of itching and smell is Femnicare pessaries by BioMedica! will cost you about $30 and you get 6. You place them in the vagina just before bed for 6 nights and within a day the itching will subside! Do not have sex will you are on these they contain (garlic, tea tree and calendula) I sware by them! another cheap method is good old tampon soaked in natural pot set yoghurt in your vagina overnight!

Hope this helps!

I also have the Mirena coil, I have had it for over two years and have had a few itchy periods but about 6 weeks ago my vagina started to itch so badly it was unbelievable! So i went to an emergency nurse who treated me for a yeast infection, this didn't help really. She also did my smear and said that the itching could be a sign that i may have cervical changes, so i was scared stiff! However my smear came back normal, the itching carried on so i went to see my doctor who did a vaginal examination and said it looked ok and not to worry. My doctor did swabs and tested me for a load of Infections, all normal. So i'm left thinking what the hell is wrong with me, am i going crazy? I almost feel like i can't go back again and say my vagina is still itching, i can't stop thinking about it!!!!!!! Anyway my doctor said that the mirena coil doesn't really cause irritation but maybe the coil strings are too long and are irritating me. In 10 days I will have my strings cut and i'm hoping to God that it will settle down, after reading all these posts i'm not so sure it will, i've been convincing myself i have a serious problem as it's been going on for so long now so now i just hope it is the mirena coil! I'm really glad i have read all your posts.

I have been experiencing the same symptoms: itching and burning. At first I thought it was a yeast infection and then when the symptoms came back, I thought I had an STD! After the pap smear came back normal, my last thought was a bad reaction to the mirena! As much as I hate the discomfort, I am glad that I'm not the only one having these problems! After 6 mos though I was hoping it would at least ease up, so I'm going to check out that website and see if the suggestions will help ease my discomfort!!!!

It has been driving me crazy, Ive gotten creams for yeast infections, wondered if my boyfriend passed me ans std,all kind of stuff. I will definitley not be having this reinserted again after my 5 years. I cant not deal with the panty liners, and discharge anymore.

Wow. So I guess BV is way more common than I suspected with IUD use.  I tried the Copper (paraguard) version for about a year, but the constant BV and 12 day periods were just too much. I had it taken out and replaced with the hormonal version (Mirena) about a month ago. The BV has come back AGAIN (which the Dr says happens after a period - the bacteria flourishes in blood) and I'm putting on weight like I did with the pill. Not cool.  I'm not getting acne like I've read a lot of others experience, but just today, the skin around my thighs has become really sensitive, like there's a rash - but there isn't, it just hurts. My bf couldn't even touch it, it felt so uncomfortable. I feel constantly bloated - with a ring of fat on my tummy that wasn't there before the Mirena, and I'm not fitting my jeans. This contraceptive sucks ass!  I'm really starting to think there is no fool-proof option. I've tried the ring, the diaphragm, condoms, all different kinds of pills. I got pregnant using natural family planning (on my period) and also by "pulling out". There's not many options left at this point ... other than getting the tubes tied.  Fed up!!!
