My response isn't much help/advice, more support in that i've had a similar problem.

I had the mirena fitted 2 weeks ago (just before my period) and, as others have mentioned, the pain was agonizing. I was told that it may be painful because I hadn't had children but it seems that isn't the case... I can't remember the name of the tool but it came out twice and I thought to myself that if it came out again I would have to stop as the pain was too much to handle.Since then I have been experiencing cramps and pains and I haven't stopped bleeding. I'm not sure if it is because my body is adjusting slowly or if something is wrong.

I would recommend going to family planning or where ever they check up on you and see what they say. Hopefully they will put your mind at ease and it will pass quickly for you.

All the best girls~

I had Mirena put it only 2 days ago.... i had local anesthesia and still it was painful.... not completely unbearable, yet painful still.... first day I had a bit of cramping and yesterday not too bad. However trying to have a bowel movement proved to be very painful. Now today i can barely take the pain. I have a high pain tolerance. I have 4 children... 2 natural births. But this pain is excruciating. I was walking thru the market... slower than my great- grandmother. At check out I felt a sharp pain and fell to my knees. Cashiers wanted to call me an EMT, cause I was in tears. But I refused as the pain subsided. Called Dr, told em I want it OUT!! And they said That was fine... Now Im just waiting for my husband to come home So he can drive me to Drs. Ladies.... Everyone reacts different to Different birth controls. Just trust what your body is telling you. Im going back on Nuva-Ring.

I had mine inserted without a local anesthetic. Just took some Motrin prior. I have given birth via c section twice, once 12 years ago after 16 hours of excruciating labor and the second time 4 years ago again after some labor. With the iud insertion I had one single mini contraction. NOT painful. Somewhat uncomfortable maybe some pressure. But after having c sections wide awake, this doesn't even register as painful.

I had mine inserted 2 days ago, and procedure was agonizing. I took 800mg of ibuprofen beforehand, did deep breathing, etc., but the only reason I went ahead with it is because I am 42 and probably won't need it inserted again (as it is good for 7 years).

I had such a hard time that my doctor said she wished she would have recommended sedation. Yeah. Me too.

I have never had children and have an anterior-positioned cervix and uterus, which made the insertion difficult and no doubt prolonged the agony.

I am extremely bloated (belly looks like I am pregnant!) and crampy. No bleeding. I am just staying on top of the ibuprofen and hoping the cramping and discomfort subsides. If it doesn't, I'll have the IUD removed.

I went to get Mirena put in today, and there are no words to describe the agony I went through. I was on my period, and had taken Ibuprofen, but this did not help the pain. Apparently, my cervix is too tight, and they could not open it enough to insert the IUD. The process of trying to open my cervix was the most agonizing experience of my life. It felt like she was ripping apart my insides. I was sweating, shaking, and had to fight to keep from passing out. After two attempts to open my cervix, I just coudnt take the pain anymore. I was given a prescription for a medication to dilate my cervix so that I could have the IUD inserted. I will not go through that pain ever again, so I am sticking to Depo and may consider the implant in the future.

I had the mirena inserted 5 years ago, 6 weeks after having my daughter.  It was nothing like today when I got it removed and a new one re-inserted.  It was excruciating!!!  I cried and could not stop.  I will never go thru that again!  I am still in pain tonight. I will have to get it removed but i will never ever go thru that pain of getting another one inserted. I will describe how it felt, not to be gross but so you understand how bad it felt.  It felt like the nurse had some type of instrument and gripped my cervix, pulling and twisting it. I know I yelled out loud that it hurt, it was sooo painful that she said she will let my body rest and come back. She came back to finish the job which was more intense pain.  Thinking about it, I cringe! During the procedure I almost passed out, they gave me a pain pill and water.  I thought I'd be fine go to work afterward, I was in so much pain and crying I couldn't.

I just had my Mirena put in today, which was the last day of my cycle! My doctor told me that it's less painful when inserted while on your cycle & it also is easier to regulate the bleeding when done while on your cycle, I have not bled at all today and the insertion was no where near as bad I expected based on the reviews I have read! It was like getting a Pap smear with a few seconds of pain and mild cramping, I have had 2 kids so I don't know if that helped! After leaving the doctors office I cramped mildly for less then 10minutes after that I have been fine all day I can definitely tell that something is inside me I feel a little weird down there but hoping that feeling will go away since I did just get it done today!

I had to stop. The device broke just after I was prepped (which felt more like being punched in the uterus with brass knuckles) I took a Vicodin before going and it did not touch the pain. I have had several kidney stones, gall bladder removal genet septic) and had a tumor removed from my liver all of which were far less painful. The dr offered to do it under anesthesia but I'm not sure I even want to try. I'm just all out of options

Everyone is being over dramatic. Does it hurt? Yes. It doesn't feel good. I have a high pain tolerance and I can say it was painful. But not to the point of passing out or crying. It's very uncomfortable and feels like something is deep inside your stomach. The pain lasts only a few seconds at a time and then subsides. The cramping lasts for awhile on and off but it's nothing unbearable. Take some Advil. No need for serious pain killers. Don't be turned off to an IUD or get it taken out 3 weeks later. After the side effects fade this method is perfect. No remembering pills or anything like that. The discharge is there but nothing a panty liner can't solve. 90% of the people commenting on this page are being extremely dramatic. IT'S NOT THAT BAD LADIES!

And I have never had a child by the way. You have to find a gyno who is comfortable and good at insertion! Most won't insert it in patients who have not have birth but some with experience will and mine was not that bad. At least not as bad as everyone makes it seem .

I have 4 children all natural I'm 30 years old. My youngest is 5yrs old. I was on the depo shot for birth control, but gained too much weight on it So I Had my Mirena inserted today and it was a nightmare. I was told by a coworker the procedure was painful so I called my doc and asked for some pain meds to take before my appt but he told me I only needed Motrin.. Yeah right! He did however use a numbing spray to numb (what I don't know) because It felt like My insides was being tore open. The procedure took about 5 minutes but After he was finished I was dizzy, hot, had trouble walking due to the pain and I had the worst cramps in my life every minute that felt like contractions. I'm thankful my husband went with me because I couldn't even drive home. After about 2 hrs and 4 ibuprofen later the cramps/contractions died down. If I knew the pain I would be in during and after the procedure I would of looked for another method. I just hope removal is nothing like the insertion. Good luck too all Mirena users!!

I had an IUD inserted today. I am 17 with no babies. The doctor told me the insertion should only feel like a period cramp for about 5 seconds and afterward cramping would subside in five minutes. Okay first of all, my experience was EXACTLY spot on just like yours. Except after vomiting and crying for 20 minutes they decided they should remove it right away. Even the removal hurt. It has been 4 hours since removal and I'm still cramping terribly and making trips to the toilet to vomit even though the doctor said removal should come with immediate relief. I'm not sure what I should do about the pain.. or even if this is normal at all whatsoever. Has anyone else experienced this?

it wasn't bad for YOU. Each person is different, with a different cervix and different experiences. I have personally dealt with extreme bodily pain before... don't even blink at needles and having my cervix dilated made me convulse, it was so painful. Glad you had a relatively manageable experience, but it's just not the same for everyone!
