I am 42 and have had 3 natural births - all stargazers (OP)... and I have an extremely high pain tolerance, however my experience with trying to have the Mirena inserted was my most unpleasant experience ever!
After multiple attempts over a 10 minute period my Dr gave up saying that it simply would not fit.
I have honestly never felt pain like it ... indescribable.
In saying this I have friends who have had it inserted with no issues and very little pain.

I went in to have Mirena implanted 4 days ago without success. I have an orange sized fibroid in the uterus so my gyno had a bit of a time trying to get past the fibroid.
The pain was pretty great as I've had no kids. I did pop a couple Tylenol beforehand but it was just not happening.
Next step is taking it to the OR where they can knock me out and possibly get it in that way.
I'm bummed of course. I'm still bleeding a little after 4 days.
Thanks everyone for posting their experiences. Its encouraging to know you aren't alone.

I am a nurse myself, and was expecting Some discomfort and pain as mentioned - but today was hands down the most pain I've ever experienced in my life.
2 csections, appendectomy, thyroidectomy, tattoos -you name it - I never needed a pain pill for anything post op ...
I had a very component well respected nurse practitioner attempt to insert a IUD with no luck.
I was tearing up and shaking but tried to endure the pain since I hate over dramatic patients myself.
Another Doctor and nurse were brought into the room. The other skilled MD tried as well and I was told that they couldn't get passed "the ridge" and that my uterus is retroverted.
Sooo after 10mins, cool compresses to my head and a nurse that was instructed to sit with me until my color came back it was the most unsuccessful trip to a Doctor I've ever made.
They want to book the insertion in the operating rm with IV sedation.
I don't know if it's all worth it.

Everyone's pain tolerance is different, their cervix sensitivity, and level of cervical stenosis is different. You cannot make a blanket statement like that. Keep in mind passing out, leg shaking, vomiting, etc. are all fight or flight reactions by our bodies that patients cannot control.

I had a merina inserted yesterday lunchtime, so about 18 hours ago. It was excruciating! I went home a felt like I was in labour with no time between contractions. I think I went into shock, I was shaking for hours. My blood pressure dropped so low a couple of times I thought I was going to faint, but I found a cold floor to lift the blood pressure again.
I found some Valium and a hot pack. It was a rough night but I must say the Valium has worked amazing!!! With enough (20mg over 12hours) the pain has stopped. I also has an anti-inflammatory (rectal because I’m celiac and like to protect my stomach). My experience, 18 hours into the process and no pain. I believe enough Valium stopped the extreme muscle cramps.
I have a very high level job so Valium can’t be my go to, but if I only need the occasional one going forward until it settles, the merina stays. Bleeding wise, just spotting, but I expect the cramps is you body trying to push out blood. But that’s my experience and I hope it’s helpful. Good luck x
