Touching base from my last post. From 2014. Mirena lasted 6 months before i had it taken out. It caused my anxiety to flare up and had raging mood swings and hormonal/painful acne. It gave me mild cramps so was uncomfortable. Wanted to give my body a break from contraception and trying to be carefull i fell pregnant a few months later, but miscarried. On the mini pill and happy to keep it that way. I know ladies that have no worries with it so goes to show it's not for everyone

Hello... yesterday I had a Mirena re-inserted. The first time my Mirena was put in was mildly uncomfortable. Other than poking out strings that needed to be cut shorter the next day....no real issues. Keep in mind, why I got it was because I was having extremely heavy periods. My periods (or should I say spotting) after that were much better. Although, after yesterday, I stated I am not getting another Mirena put back in me. The pain was so intense; I was sweating profusely, and it took the life out of me (I was out of it and needed to lay back down because I thought I was going to faint). Part way through I said the pain wasn't like this the first time..., and reiterated that I had and inverted uterus....hoping there might be adjustments made to lessen the discomfort. The pain was still bad/the same. On top of that, the nurse practitioner stated the strings didn't come out like they were supposed to. So, she took out the first one, and I had to go through it again. It was 30X or more the pain than the first procedure. Fortunately, I am 47, and hopefully when this round is done, I will have gone through menonpause.
Right now, I can say I am much more relieved. We'll see what the future holds.
The administer explained that my uterine wall was thin, etc... after the Mirena was implanted. I really didn't catch all that she was saying, because I was not all with it. I am wondering if the "new" implementation device is part of the problem. I suggest going online and watching the instructional video, so you know somewhat what to expect. I was not told to take any medication ahead of time. If you decide to try it: 1) Get to know your physician/nurse. 2) Take a really good dose of ibuprofen, Midol, whatever before you go in....there is a chance that might help a smidge. 3) Make sure you are in the right menstral part of your cycle, 4) Expect the worst....and maybe you'll come fine if you are fortunate (like I was the first time). Good Luck!

These women aren't exaggerating... the insertion is very different for everyone and a tight cervix can make for an incredibly painful experience. You must have gotten lucky

I'm on my fourth Mirena. Yes, the insertion hurts a lot... For me even more since I have a curved uterus... The cramps, bleeding, spotting and pain are normal, but I promise all will go away. I would not use any other method. I have been using it since I was 23 and I'm 40 now. I don't look forward for the day of the insertion, but having not periods and no PMS symptoms is worth it.

I'm 54 and had a Mirena inserted 4 years ago for HRT purposes. Despite a painful insertion, I enjoyed 4 very good years with it. When It was removed recently, I had planned to have another put straight back in, but it was so hard to remove and so painful, I thought my womb was going to come out with it.
After two failed attempts to put a new one in, doctor referred me to family planning as they have stirrups, retractors and anaesthesia - yay ! Having visited there for a consultation, I was given no sense of confidence or encouragement so I'm not sure what to do now. I really want one, but the process of getting one for me has been very painful and frightening. As previous posters have said, everyone is different. I've had two kids, one vaginally, but suspect my problems are due to my age and the effect of the menopause.

Everyone is different and everyone's cervix is narrower or more open depending on the person. My internal OS is very narrow and my GYN had a very difficult time placing it both times despite So some are more painful than others. I had my 2nd insertion today after 5 years. It is worth it but it was agonizing. However this is just the 10 minutes it took. She would like to do my next under conscious anesthesia though due to difficulty.

I think the point is, the is a HUGE variation intensity of reaction. Some feel a pinch, some don't feel anything, some feel intense pain. So I would refrain from judging the experience of others. You can proclaim you are the 66.6666% whose insertion didn't bother her, and that's GREAT, for you. 33.33333% do have it hurt like nothing on earth, and I'm not sure it's helpful to tell people they are sure to be in the 2/3 group for whom it doesn't hurt; it's more helpful (for others in the 1/3 group for whom it is quite painful) to share their experience. I think both POVs are good to have, since who knows which group a woman will be in?

Just got mine inserted & I cried, felt like I was going to pass out, sweat and I absolutely will tell other women what I felt. Not sure why you feel other women's experiences are less significant than yours. I am so thankful to have found responses that match my experience because I know now it is "normal". I was in agonizing pain, the doctor froze me after not being able to open my cervix... & even after she did it still KILLED!. &
I had taken pain killers before. Everyone's experience is different I wouldn't say don't do it because of my experience but it's good to know what you can expect.

I've had 3 IUDs now. First was cramping and uncomfortable but not more than a 3 on a pain chart. Second was a solid 5 but the pain didn't last long. Third was off the charts painful and I have very high tolerance for pain. I finished my shift at work after breaking my fingers and this was worse. Just because you had a good experience does not mean it's the same as everyone else's.

I'm with you on that! I went in today and it was probably the worst, most excruciating pain I've ever felt in my life and my doctor was taking so long to do it that half way through she had to stop because I was screaming in pain. I almost passed out. She did not warn me that it would hurt!!!!! She just said I may feel some discomfort. I am so angry. She even acted surprised by my reaction and she blew me off like I was just a wimp. So now, hours later, I am still cramping and in pain and it was all for nothing because she didn't even insert it.

That's really not fair for you to comment on other people's pain and tell them to not be so dramatic. I've had multiple surgeries and a very high tolerance for pain and i vasovagalled today, which I've never done in my life. In case you're uneducated in medicine which I assume you are based on your attitude. It's when your body is not capable of handling the pain it's feeling so it shuts itself down, bp drops, pulse drops, and the blood flow through your body is too slow to get to your brain so you lose consciousness. So after all that SUPER fun stuff, he still couldn't place it today because my cervix was too tight. So now I get to go back and do this again. But thanks for your education to women everywhere about pain. I'm sure it made everyone feel great.

I agree, it certainly seems like everyone experiences this differently. I was feeling bad because I need to have another one put in and I'm terrified about it. My first one was fine, has some local and it hurt a bit but nothing worse than bad cramping. When I had to have that one out, the gynaecologist didn't give me any pain relief and it felt like she was ripping my uterus out. I didn't want to let her anywhere near me again but I knew I had to have a new one put in. When it came time to have that one out, I actually kept putting it off because I was so anxious about it. The GP gave me anxiety meds just so I could get through it. They meant I don't really remember the procedure but I know it hurt a lot. I didn't get one put back in because my GP wanted to see how I was without it. A year of erratic/heavy bleeding later and I need to get one again. This time I'm having it done under a light general anaesthetic because I can't handle it otherwise.
