I have noticed a difference in side effects from Adderall XR and generic Amphetamine that is not extended release. When I first took adderall XR I fell asleep for 3 hours (I had been very sleep deprived) but then I would have trouble going to bed at night. Once I was in bed though I would fall asleep right away as opposed to how I was before taking meds. When I switched to the generic not extended release, I had less side effects and I was able to sleep even better. I skipped a day of meds sort of on accident and I tried to go to sleep and I was back to racing thoughts and feeling really alert as I was trying to sleep. Chemically they believe that if you do have AD/HD, the chemicals that are responsible for deep sleep occur while you are awake and the chemicals responsible for alertness occur when you are trying to go to sleep. Adderall is supposed to correct this, so you should feel more energized and alert when you take it in the day, but you shouldn't feel "manic". You might experiment with XR and not XR if you find problems with one. There might not be any real reason that I feel different on the non-XR, but I do... I will say that you should give it a week if you have mild side effects because my mild side effects did go away.

I found out I had ADD and was prescribed 10mg Adderall on my 24th birthday. It was like finding my missing piece. At first I felt high but good and realized how much help I really needed. After a week or so the high feeling went away but it felt alot like coffee to me. After about a month It felt like it wasnt working well enough so my doctor upped me to 20mg x2 a day. I felt like a tweaker at first cus of the stigma attached but I realized that even though I enjoy the high it gives me, I truly need it to live a normal life. Yes it does make me feel more awake and focused but it goes much deeper for me. I have always hated being sober and use to just smoke weed all day to get that normal feeling but weeds side effects are just as bad or worse than the ADD. When I take Adderall my cravings to get high and smoke are gone (at least until nighttime when it wears off) and the blanket of pot that I used to live under has finally gone away. All the background noise in my head are gone also (like music and random thoughts that can be distracting) and I can actually have a blank mind if I want. It feels like Im the one in control now and Im changing my life for the better. Despite having an IQ of +120 I could never do well in school and failed every class I was in until they kicked me out my freshman year of high school. Now Im enrolled in college, spending less money on impulsive buys, working out more, eating better, fixing my busted grill and finally doing all the things I always wanted to but couldnt. I wasted my whole adolescents and I am just now fixing all the damage not knowing about my condition caused. So while some of you people say that no one should take Adderall I am living proof that you are wrong. Yes there are some side effects to taking it but they are so negligible when compared to a lifetime of not taking it.
It does calm me down in a way but also makes me feel awake. But I do get tired on occasion sometimes just an hour or two after taking it but its not directly caused by the Adderall, just compounded by it. I have always got tired and lethargic when I dont eat properly but its much worse when I take Adderall because I dont realize when Im hungry and my nervous system is working harder also. Once I eat some carbs and sugar I feel very awake almost instantly. So while it should calm people like me down it shouldnt make us tired. If you feel tired than your body is either over worked or under fueled. So if you do either adjust your dose or just eat

The common street ignorance shown here is quite astounding. Stop listening to the kind of people that only want the "white tablets with 'oc' written on them". Most of you posting here, at least from a pharmacology perspective, don't have enough knowledge to write three sentences of worthwhile information for ANYone.
I'm a pharmacy technician, and even at that, I don't have the kind of knowledge about medications that any pharmacist should, but I can guarantee you, those pharmacists went to school for 6 years for that knowledge. They didn't surf the Internet looking for advice from know-it-all drug addicts. So if you don't have a valid foundation for your information, I'd suggest all of you that are getting your panties up in a wad over how much you know or how much someone doesn't, keep your "knowledge" to yourself. And for the record, even doctors don't always know their worth in the medicines they prescribe. I see it all the time.
Adderall is dextroamphetamine and salt saccarates. Yes, commonly, amphetamines are a stimulant. But thats not always the case. In a case of someone that legitimately has ADD or ADHD, adderall is actually prescribed as a depressant, to calm the nervous system. BUT that doesn't mean it will act that way in each individual. There is no way to diagnose ADD, so adderall and its effects are hit or miss with each patient. I've taken concerta, vyvanse, and adderall, and have received different effects from all of them (yes I realize there's a difference between dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate, etc).
Bottom line is there are way too many factors in pharmaceuticals to call one or the other reactions a norm. Look at corricidin. Take too many of those and you'll trip as hard as hardcore drugs. Brain chemistry, dosage, constitution form, metabolites, etc, ALL play a role in how your body reacts to the pills you take. This isn't weed, it's not smoke = get high. These kinds of things are complex and unpredictable.

You need to find out if you actually have ADHD. None of the stimulant meds are to be played with. Go to the DSM-IV-TR book and look up the criteria needed to be a positive diagnosis but find a psychiatrist who knows what he or she is doing. Taking it with lamictal needs to be reviewed. If your doc put you on Lamictal for normal depression and anxiety---change your doctor. There are many others that are less complex and powerful drugs.
Also I recommend the book NO WAY TO BE TREATED.

I took some aderall this morning. I have had trouble lately focusing on my work. My wife is ADD so she told me to try it. It has been horrible. Felt like i was coming down off cocaine all day...Grinding teeth, jittery, sweaty feet, nervous....ICK! Focusing was impossible....It made my problem way worse. Energy isnt my problem, its staying on task. Well I am the most hyper person i have ever met...so maybe this isnt the right thing for me. What should I seek?

Hey, I just read your info on here as I have just started taking Adderall 20 mg twice a day. I was also prescribed Trazodone to help with my sleep issues. I have been on antidepressant for about 15 years and have always know I suffered from ADD. But back then, this wasn't really something you treated or was even categorized as an "illness". My question is this, How should I be feeling on adderall? So far, Im not a fan. Dry mouth, a little nervous feeling, not hungry. That is about it. I am able to concentrate a bit more but I have done "speed" recreationally before and could concentrate really well. You strike me as someone who is similar in your illness and basically I just want to know if the adderall has worked out for you as well as the Trazodone. I am also lowering my zoloft in hopes to get rid of it completely. Thank you!!

To anyone who says that you don't need adderall if it doesn't make you tired or sleepy is seriously misinformed. Adderall is prescribed for many reasons. If it is supposed to make you tired, then why would they give it to people with narcolepsy, chronic fatigue, or even depression. These are all valid diagnoses for a physician to give a prescription for adderall and I don't think it is supposed to make them tired. (Making a narcoleptic person tired is very dangerous FYI) Adderall affects everyone differently. If it is serving its purpose without adverse effects and you are getting regular check-ups with your physician then it is okay to take.

For a 'psychiatrist' you sure don't know how to spell. Did you get your 'MD' at Apollo college? And by the way, the 'predecessor' to epinephrine is not adrenaline; epinephrine is adrenaline- bio 101.

Hey guys, I just took 40 mg of Adderall (doctor prescribed im not some crack head) , and 25 mg of Sertraline, also doctor prescribed. i have been on these meds for a bout 1 month and just recently my doctor raised my dosage (minimaly) and now im feeling.. all around extremely good... its weird to explain because i havent really experienced something like this. i almost always have body aches and pains, and now for some reason they are all entirely gone. its euphoric i guess? i can breathe really deeply and clearely, wich doesnt seem related at all i know. ***this post is edited by moderator *** ***

To the guest who claims to be a psychiatrist: it's hard to believe you are a Dr. Considering you didn't even use proper grammar. Maybe you meant to say that you took the class -recreational drugs -and now think you know everything. You dont get a masters on top of a doctorate..lol..you have to have a masters then a doctorate. Silly people...and if you are a psychiatrist ..don't you have people to treat rather than call people names with stars? Reeeaaal professional!

Couldn't agree with you more. It makes makes sense since adhd is a deficiency in the pathway that include serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine all important in sleep and keeping your mind clear. Those people who claim to have adhd and take adderall and it keeps them up don't actually have the disorder or the dosage is too high. This is why people view it as over diagnosed because there are those that actually need it and those that are just lazy.
