sometimes i see other runners with some kind of armband cuff --is that for measuring b.p. or heart rate or something? if so, what is the benefit of that? (i mean do you check it while your running, before and after or what?) is there an optimum heart rate bp for beginning runners?
thanks someone out there.

hey there,
being a newbie myself I am not 100% sure but I thought it was a radio that they were wearing. I thought this mainly cos most HRM I have seen have a band which goes around your chest rather than your arm. It could be B.P, but I have not seen stuff on using this in running before, but then I haven't looked for it :).

As to weather you need a HRM, people will tell you different things. Some say that if you are just starting you won't need one, others say that its a good way for newbies to judge their pace so they don't overdo it. I would say, buy a cheapish one and just try it, if you like it, keep it, if you don't use it when you've become more established.

The HR which you should run at is different for each person, but for steady runs they say to run at 65 - 70% of you max HR. Threshhold runs at 75 - 80%.

I hope this helps.

Kittyhen seemed to nail most of it. The arm bands are either radios or maybe a GPS pod but those mostly go on your wrist or shoe. All the HRM's that I have seen use a chest strap so it can get an accurate measurement of your heart rate.

I've heard that soem of those arm bands can be problematic in that they slide down, especially if you're wearing a tank top...

I have a larger iPod, so I don't think it would work - I'd love to get a nano, I've heard those aren't so much a problem. I always listen to the same workout mix anyway!

I had an armband fm radio that I used to run with but the strap would always rub under my arm and across my deltoid muscle and give me a nice runners rash. I had to stop using it.
