I talked with my sister yesterday over the phone and she was crying, she said she is sick. She had something called herpetic stomatitis in her mouth. I have never heard of it. What is herpetic stomatitis? Is she going to be ok? I mean is it curable? She is only 12 years old.

Herpetic stomatitis is a viral infection of the mouth characterized by ulcers or inflammation. It is a contagious viral illness caused by Herpes virus hominis. The inside of the cheeks and tongue frequently develop ulcers 1 - 5 mm in diameter and these ulcers are very painful and cause drooling, difficulty swallowing, and decrease in food intake. Herpetic stomatitis can be treated with the acyclovir family of antiviral medications, the illness clears up and ulcers are generally healed within 10 days. Treatment is a mostly liquid diet consisting of cool-to-cold, nonacid drinks should be provided while the child's mouth is very sore. I think she is going to be ok.
