What is the primary cause of skin cancer? Does it affect only fair skinned people? What cause skin cancer in dark skinned? A friend of mine does not belong to a group of fair skinned. He was diagnosed skin cancer on his back, fortunately, in early stage and is going to have it surgically removed. Is it always due to sun exposure?

Ultraviolet radiation is considered as primary cause of skin cancer. Anyone can develop skin cancer, even those with dark hair and skin, young people, healthy people. Number of cases of skin cancer increases every year and it is due to thinning of protective ozone layer. So it is actually not the sun that is responsible for development of the disease, but the exposure to radiation. Artificial sources of radiation like tanning booths and sunlamps can cause skin cancer too.

Hi there,
Skin cancer is abnormal skin cell growth and in most cases it happens because of the exposure to the sun. However you have to know that skin cancer can occur on the parts of your skin that are not exposed to the sun as well. Do you know what form of skin cancer does your friend have? There are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. I know that melanoma is the cancer of the melanocytes which are the cells that produce pigment in your skin. Ultraviolet light is most often the main reasons why someone can get the skin cancer. I hope this helped you in any way.

Best wishes,
Marco
