What keeps me running?
The certain knowledge that if I quit, it's going to take longer to finish by walking the rest of the way. Even though my pace may be best described as "plodding," quitting makes me a quitter - even on training runs.
That, and the fact that it's sub-freezing these days and becoming a human popsicle isn't my idea of an enjoyable run.
I've considered listening to music on runs. But if I did so, I'd miss the sound of the great blue heron squawking as it flies off upriver or the cacophonous honking of that huge (75+) formation of Canada geese or the screech of the red-tailed hawk as it circles above...but maybe Santa will be kind and bring me an MP-3 player...I mean, nature only has so much to offer.

As I am retired from running, and only able to do limited bike riding, I guess what keeps me going is the fact that I am able to go at all

Great thread, Ang! I run because I can, always remembering the time the doctors told me I was done forever and that the quality of life I was living when I was sick was as good as it was gonna get. Thanks for the reminder, been slacking a bit lately. :)

The people I run with keeps me running. Hubby and friends. Knowing that someone is meeting me at 5:45 gets me out the door.

Reminds me of a poster I saw at Fleet Feet.
It's a woman running alone and the caption reads:
"I never run alone because I really like the woman I run with".
Pretty deep, pretty neat.

Only every time that I see this topic... :)
Ditto that (and I'm not a big fan of the song either :? )

i've seen it and i like it!!!
what keeps me running?
tons of stuff.
sometimes i think i'm trying to set an example for my kids. i'd love for them to both have a lifelong committment to exercise and fitness. they always say kids learn what they live.
i'd like them to remember me as an active mom, not a couch potato watching soaps and vegging all day. bleh.

What keeps me running...
My first motivator is to stay in shape. I find my two year break from it to have been my worst years to date with my weight and body perception ever.
My second motivation is to set an example for my children. I feel it's important to show them the importance of exercise and it's benefits for their bodies. I already have my 8 year old asking when she can do a few runs with me.
Third and final...to find out how far I can go. Soon I hope to get my Half Marathon goal out of the way. I have it in the back of my mind that I'll want to do a Full Marathon as well. I've never been motivated more to do races and increase my milege than I have now. I ran for 18 years before this took place.

Maybe not 1 of 10 for me....alot less often. But every once in awhile after a hard workout, when I'm done......I think "wow, I can't believe I did that"!!!! or 10 miles into a run you think that you can run however (of course that feeling ends 6 miles later :( )

Because I like who I am now a hell of a lot better than the person I was before I took up running again.

For me there are many different reasons why i still get out and hit the pavement. running wise it's to imprve my skating. skatwise
getting together with my buddies.
improving my times and get higher in the podium.
to go faster, not just in racing but i mean to find that sweet downhill and let her rip. major adreneline rush :fubby:
a bit of a topic geek, new innovations are constantly emerging keeping the sport "new"
the abilty to lose myself, to hit that point where, the world disappears, and the only thing out there is the sound of my wheels the pavement, a breeze in my ear. total tranquility a Zen moment

my watch. i have the timex ironman triathlon. i love it (when it works ). when i'm board at a restaurant or waiting for an appointment, i scroll through my recent training session time and think about what i could have done better. when i run, i love all its features. it rocks!
but really, what keeps me on my feet and running is the fact that i found a sport i love.
