i put my g/f first almost all the time... i'm not convinced she always puts me first. at least it's always first when it's convenient for her, and heaven forbid i put someone else first that night... oh my.
most of my decisions are based on what would make her, then i, happy. at some point i'm gonna have to put i before her, on a few more occasions.
You're right. This scenario works only when both parties are committed to this behavior. Otherwise, you get a really one-sided relationship.

I would have to say finding someone that complements you, whose strengths support your weaknesses, and vice versa. Some one who completes you, similar interestes (not necessarly the same).
