I am trying to find out if my daughter currrently prescribed aciclovir should switch to famciclovir for her cold sores. Currently has 6 on her lower lip and the aciclovir doesn't seem to be helping.

Hi there, the effectiveness is hard to talk about when I don't know what dose she's at for either one, but the reason why switching might be a good idea is some medications aren't as good for some as others would be. Does that help at all?

Can't say for cold sores, but famvir has been much more effective for me. I have an odd case of recurring painful shingles infections (over years), that started after a bout with bell's palsy. I had the opportunity to try all of the available antivirals at different times before a doctor finally agreed to put me on daily famvir (about 3 years ago). From my experience, I can tell you that in my case it has been the most effective with the least number of side effects.
