I was on Yasmin for three years in college and LOVED it. I got skinnier and my boobs got slightly larger and my skin cleared up! It didn't make me moody ro crazy. Hooray! But during my senior year for some reason I just started having my period all the time, so they switched me. But I wasn't really happy on any of them. I just felt so off. Finally they put me on Yaz. It was the worst decision I have ever made. I got seriously depressed and apathetic and I completely LOST my sex drive. I was miserable. Within a month of going off of it, I'm just starting to feel like myself again. Now I'm not on anything and am researching my options.

Yaz is great for a lot of people, but use it carefully. If you notice yourself feeling off or down or not interested in your boyfriend, don't just assume you are stressed. Talk to your dr asap. It takes a while to bounce back from Yaz so if it bothers you, get off of it as soon as you can. But for you ladies it works for, you are lucky! It does completely get rid of PMS, which was great while it lasted! :-)

I just had my doctor take me off of Yaz. To the lady above who mentioned the weight-gain on Yaz WHILE dieting and exercising, this is exactly what happened to me. I know my body, and there is something not right with Yaz and weight gain. I felt as if I could go a whole week without eating a bite of food, and I would somehow gain weight. To sum things up, my body feels like it's pregnant, when it's not. My boobs have grown (which is not a good thing because I am already large in the chest area), I have headaches, extreme fatigue, no libido at all, and constant spotting. Also, the price of Yaz was burning a hole in my checkbook.

I just requested to get put on Yasmin, and I'm really hoping things will go back to normal. I used to be on Ortho Tri-Cyclen, which worked just fine until it stopped being a strong enough pill for me.

My skin is beautiful on Yaz, but I never had skin problems to begin with, so the sacrifice is small. It did take away PMS, but the other side effects ended up not being worth it in the long run. Dieting without any results is AWFUL. Hope this helps! :-D

I was on Yasmin for months even after bariatric lapband surgery. I recently was switched to YAZ after being off pills for a few months so that I can go on Accutane. I have gained about 9/10 pounds in 2 months even with a lap band. I really cannot eat much so it isn't my diet. I have maintained a steady weight for a year and a half being on Yasmin... so I know it is because of YAZ.
I just called my gyn to change me back to Yasmin.

WOW! Am I glad I came across this website! Depression, hair loss, weight gain, tired all the time-I thought this was all just me!
I started taking Yasmin about 3 months ago-and like someone else on here I mistakenly asked for Yasmin instead of Yaz.
Now I do want to start on Yaz but now I also see you have weight gain on Yaz as well..? Just got married in April and have gained almost 10 lbs since April '08 ):
But thank you all for your comments it has really answered ALOT of questions.

I having been trying to figure out why I have gained weight while totally eating healthy and working out regularly. I increased my cardo weekly, cut back calories and still the same bloated, swollen feeling and look. It occurred to me today that maybe it has to do with my switching from Yasmin to Yaz back in July this summer. The weight gain is specific too - in my upper arms and thighs. After reading the previous posts, it sounds like others have gained on Yaz too. I'm thinking of switching back. Does anyone else's wt gain seem really specific or strange? Any feedback is appreciated.
FYI - my first month on Yaz was uncomfortable - moody, headaches, anxious but it has since been fine except for the weight.

I used to use Yasmin, but then I started getting really nauseous. I switched to Yaz and have been on it for over a year and I've never had any noticeable side effects. It has shortened my period to about 3 days and is much lighter, with virtually no cramps (which is why i'm on BC to begin with).

PS--I used Accutane for a year and it was a miracle. Don't listen to those generic haters. As long as you take care of yourself while you use it, it is a life saver in my opinion.

I just got a forwarded e-mail about a 32-year-old woman suffering from a series of strokes while on Yaz, which is how I ended up here. I'm trying to research the whole topic. I've been on Yasmin for a few years now, with no real noticeable side effects. It's been great. I've never tried Yaz. One thing I've noticed, in reading these posts, is that quite a few people say they "LOVED" Yasmin, and then were encouraged by their GYN to switch to Yaz, which ended up being the worst thing ever. And Yaz is way more expensive, to boot. I would have to say that the whole Yaz thing sounds like a total conspiracy. Why are drs. encouraging people to make the switch? Also, is the fact that Yaz is a lower dose the only difference between Yaz and Yasmin? It seems like there must be more to it.

I had been on Yazmin for about 3 years now. Before that I was on Allese for about six months (AWFUL: made me break out, became depressed by boobs became huge and I am not big to start with). Before that i was on Tricyclen since i was 18.

I was switched to YAZ 2 weeks ago by my doctor to see if it helps me with my chronic constipation as it is a lower dose and bcp are known to cause constipation for some. Please note I have been tested for celiac which came back negative. I have not eaten dairy products for about 2 years now.

I loved being on Yasmin: short periods, great skin, no cramping, stable weight (ive been the same weight for the past 10 years). Now I am getting all nervous: I am not a huge eater and find I am constantly hungry on YAZ, even after eating a normal sized meal. I have no other symptoms except this. nothing else has changed in my life so Im thinking it has to do with this new pill.

Is it ok to go back onto Yasmin after 1 month use of YAZ? It seems that the messages boards are much more positive towards Yasmin vs. YAZ.

I have been on Yaz for 5 months now and it cleared up my skin perfectly BUT I have gained almost 10 lbs!!!!!!!!!! I have continued my exercise throughout the course of this pill and the weight just keeps packing on. The main target areas are thighs and arms. I run 12 miles a week and snowboard ont he weekends. Some days I feel like I am going to crawl out of my skin, it's so uncomfortable. The only benefit is that it has completely cleared up my skin. I am on the fence about swtiching to yasmin, I would hate for my skin to break out but I can't take this bloated look/feeling. It is almost as bad as the acne I had.

Yaz contains the following: 3mg drosperinone and .02mg ethynil estradiol.
Yasmin contains the following: 3mg drosperinone and .03mg ethynil estradiol.

The difference in the medications is negligible. The difference is not 10mg as someone posted, but rather 1 micrograms. Original birthcontrol "recipes" contained as much as 100 micrograms of the drug. Dosing now is anywhere from .02 mg for birth control to as much as 1 mg for treatment of breast cancer.

Symptoms arising from a switch from Yasmin to Yaz are possible, but unlikely. It's important to keep in mind that estrogens have a long list of contraindicated medications and if you haven't given your physician a complete medical history including over the counter medications, supplements and recreational drugs used it's possible to have a reaction with the drugs.

Also, it's good to establish a relationship with your pharmacist. There are so many drugs and so many interactions between drugs that your medication specialist (the pharmacist) is an important member of your wellness team.

Oh, and Yasmin has an over the counter generic now called Ocella. A Yaz generic is in the works and will be released when Bayer's patents expire.

It's possible that the weight gain is related to the lowering of the hormone when you switched to Yaz. Hormones will adjust themselves eventually and compensate for the estrogen you're not giving your body if you wait long enough. And talk to most women who go through menopause, reduced hormones = weight gain.

A month isn't enough time to let your body adjust to the new levels of hormone even though the difference is minimal.

Hi, I am also 25 but I just started taking Yasmin. Today actually. I am very confused about these two pills. I went to my doctor for help with my severe PMS, which I am assuming is PMDD. She put me on Yasmin because it has a generic form and she said there is not much of a difference between the two except for Yaz being a lower dosage. She claimed the pill would help with my mental state, horribly heavy periods, acne, and a pain that is unlike cramping that I have been having on one of my ovaries. However when I went to the website for Yasmin both products popped up but it said that Yaz is the ONLY pill on the market proven to be effective in treating PMDD. After reading many posts it seems like Yasmin is preffered so now I am just more confused. On top of the severe depression, mood swings, and irritabiluty that visit me the week before my period I am also usually blessed with debilitating cramps that often involve me passed out on the floor or hugging the toilet. I know that probably the best thing to do is probably just see how Yasmin works out but I was already weary about the idea of putting fake hormones into my body so I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. So if anyone has any advice about this please help me!

Hi all!
I am on my first week of yaz and I do feel very moody, anxious and bloated... Is this what I should expect on the first month? Will this ever disappear??? I was told by my doc that this was THE BEST pill to take...

The first pill I ever went on was Yasmin, and it was great for about 7 or 8 months. My skin didn't clear up (which is what I was hoping for), but I didn't gain any weight either. It made my periods shorter and lighter, and my cramps were a lot better some months. I switched to Cyestra-35 to help my skin, which didn't help, and it gave me horrible cramps and made my periods much, much longer. Anyways, I know Cyestra-35 isn't part of this topic, but I thought I'd just mention it. So now I just got a new pack of Yasmin, but my doctor has recommended Yaz. After reading these side-effects, I'm thinking I might just stay on Yasmin... unless it will clear up my skin? I don't know what to do!

I've been on Yaz for a year, and I think it's the best thing since toast! My skin cleared up, my PMS basically went away. The only negative side effects are that right before my period I get really emotional, bloated, and stressed.
