My 11 month grandson has one swollen testicle and a little sore on the underside of his penis, no other sores or redness on any other area of his bottom, but I suppose that is a type of diaper rash. My daughter said that he might be having hydrocele. What does it mean? Could this be the cause?

He probably has a hydrocele (hydroseal). A boy's testicles develop inside of his abdomen while he’s still in the womb. Sometime before birth they usually push through a tunnel in the tissue between the groin and the abdomen and descend into the scrotal sac the passage through the abdominal wall should close up. But if it remains open, as it does in up to 50 %of newborn boys, fluid may accumulate around the testicle and cause swelling. This area of swelling is called a hydrocele. It shouldn’t bother your baby and will probably go away. Anyway you should take him to the doctor.

Please remember that you have patients of varrying ages here.
One is an infant, one is able to type.
There is ALWAYS scarring with any surgury... it's the nature of the beast.
However, with an infant, there are years of growth and development ahead, so there will be less and less of a scar remaining after ANY surgery.
Now, as for having to return for more treatment, that's possible, however the urologist would have advised this before beginning treatment.
The presence of fluid may or may not indicate another problem going on.
Certainly, fluid can return and collect around the scrotum after being drained.
But I would think if your infant's doctor recommended surgery for this condition, he would be able to answer many more of these questions than the rest of us. I would pose these questions to him on your next meeting.
Also, the question of pain is relative when you come to an infant. Certainly, they can give him something to block the sting of a shot, or the pain of surgery... so I would not worry about this.
The treatment of the condition would far outweigh any concerns about pain or small scaring, I would think.

My son had this operation done when he was 2! He was taken in in the morning, they put numbing cream on his hand ready for the canular but didnt put this in until he was asleep. When they took him down they held an oxygen mask to his mouth and within seconds he was asleep. I stayed with him until he was asleep and then just waited until he came back. I think he was down about 1 hour or so. When he came back he was groggy but up and playing in no time. As soon as he had something to eat and they saw he could keep it down he was allowed to go home. The cut was about 1 and a half inches and he was in very little pain from the opertaion. He is now 8 and the scar is almost invisible and on the top of his groin. So after puberty it probably be covered.
It is scary leaving your little one especially to go into theatre. But the parents worry a hell of alot more than the child. Its our job. Good luck :-)

WHAT IS THE TEST THAT IS USED TO FIND OUT IF AN 82 YEAR OLD MIGHT HAVE TESTICULAR CANCER? I HAD THIS TEST DONE BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN THE RESULTS. IT WAS DONE AT THE SMITH-GLEN CLINIC IN SPRINGFIELD, MO. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO. IT WAS DONE WITH A PROBE THAT WAS TAKING PICTURES FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES USING CONTACT LUBRICANT.
