Loss of facial volume or thin cheeks is a problem for some people, especially women who want chubby cheeks. While some people prefer to have a thin face, others are worried about losing fat or muscle in their cheeks. They often wonder if they can solve this problem by eating more without the rest of their body getting fat or if there is some facial exercise that can tone their cheek muscles without having to go for surgery to get chubby cheeks.

Facial volume loss is commonly the result of aging, which also comes with the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other changes in the face.

The skin loses its moisture and the tissues become weak, and with gravity, the skin begins to sag. Aside from the natural process of aging, overexposure to the UV rays of the sun and weight loss also contribute to skin thinning and sagging, which adds years to one's facial appearance.

Yoga for the Face

One option offered by Annelise Hagen, a New York yoga instructor, is to practice facial yoga, which tones the muscles and relieves tension in the face. Along with some doctors, she believes that muscular activity can help in the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, which makes the face firm. Facial yoga involves contorting the face to create a variety of facial expressions,which have specific benefits. Doing the "fish face," "bumblebee" and "satchmo" benefits the cheeks, making them firmer and full.

However, some experts feel that this may have a limited effect, since it cannot stop the process of aging, which leads to thinner skin and facial volume loss.

Plastic Surgery

Another option offered by dermatologists and plastic surgeons is the injection of a dermal filler deep into the skin to correct volume loss. This injectable filler may be made of fat, collagen, hyaluronic acid, or other synthetic materials. These are also used to reduce facial wrinkles, improve facial contours and to plump up thin lips.

Dermal fillers are generally safe to use. However, you may also experience some side effects such as redness, swelling, bruising, and facial asymmetry, which are temporary. It is also important to remember that the results are not permanent and that as you age, you may need to have repeated injections to maintain facial volume.
