I've had an occasional bout with belly button pain since my very first episode at 17. I'm 36 now. I read about this symptom on an IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrom) forum. I never found out what caused my pain, but I was diagnosed with IBS several years ago for different symptoms. So you may want to check with a doctor who specializes in IBS. No other symptoms accompany my bellybutton cramps but vomiting, diarreah and/or constipation are symptoms of IBS. Hope this helps.

My 8 year old daughter has had this for over 2 months now, daily, constantly, but with "flairs". I have a couple of observations about some of the previous posts. First, there is something called "Functional Abdominal Pain" ... it's essentially constipation, but not in a dismissive way, and can be found in children (people?) with normal bowel movements. Basically, the bowels are just stretched out of shape and are having spasms. Our favorite doctor told us it's a 6-8 week problem. Next my daughter is having something called a Meckel's scan to see if there is a leftover part of her umbilical cord that is collecting acid (diverticulitis I guess?) so this fits with another poster's hypothesis. My daughter had a CT and they did find enlarged lymph nodes (mesenteric adenitis) and an enlarged section of her bowel, but maybe not enough to explain the extent of her pain ...

I'm 16 years of age and have been having episodes like this for as long as i can remember. My bouts don't seem to be as bad as some of the other victims of, what i call, bellapullacitis. Stupid, but it's only thing i can think off to call it. For me it is an awful debilitating pulling pain. It lasts no longer than 3 minutes. If i try to straighten my back it hurts even more. It just spurs up. If you have any answers please email!

Hi! I'm 18 and I've been experiencing this type of pain since I started to become a teenager. The pain was just for a while and it only occurs when I'm trying to stretch up my body. The pain is somehow irritating when I do that but it gets really annoying at times. The weird thing is, I'm usually experiencing this for like minutes but the pain is still there and its like hours now. I hope I can get answers soon before I go to the doctor.

I'm 15 years of age, and i just started experiencing this pain a few weeks ago. I didn't pay it any attention until my second time feeling having this pain and I have no idea whats causing it. I play sports, I'm not sexually active, and I dont smoke or drink. I'm kind of afraid but i haven't told my mother yet , at first i thought it was no big deal, but this time the pain was worse. It's right behind my belly button, if i lay back it hurts more. I dont know what to do, i dont want to overreact but i dont want to overlook it and pay for it later. please reply back if you have any helpful information!

hi, i'm a male and i have experiences this too
In a way it feels like something might be 'tangled' around a 'cord' inside.
I dont know, but when i layed down for a bit, i felt a sharp kind of twang of pain, like something coming off it and then it didnt come back
I might be totally imagining things but this is how it felt to me
The only time it's ever happened to me is twice, after/during sex, but it's lasted hours after. Is there a connection between physical activity and this pain?

My 13 year old son has missed 10 weeks of school since November with the same symptoms. A pain just above his belly button and constant diarrhea. He has been tested for food allergies (and has a lot), all of which we have removed from his diet. He also had a celiac test done and is going on Wednesday for a Lactose intollerance test. We thought the same thing with school and that maybe there was something else going on but it doesn't seem that is the case. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is a lactose problem as it makes sense as both my husband and I are both lactose intollerant. We have however removed milk from his diet with no change in his symptoms.

i hope this helps... im also 15 i experianced this pain back in may...i went to the doctors they kept me in the hospital for 4 days i had high white bloodcell count, and i would get right tight stomach and real sore around the belly button i got real weak and nauses and dizzy. the doctors didnt know what it was. they sent me to another hospital and got me to get a cat scan and bunch of blood tests and lots of urine samples and ultrasounds. they wouldnt let me eat... i never ate in those 4 days. if i ate id get EXTREMLY gassy and make everything worse. the doctors then found out after all this was that my hormones were all.. idk blah i guess? and that after my periods there was blood staying in my pelvis area causing infections in my body. i was in so much pain they had me on morphine. i dont know if this is what she has but im just letting you know. its pure hell. the doctor advised me to go on birthcontrol to straighten out my horomones so this wont happen anymore... my mom didnt want to do that cause she thought that i would think ohh im on the pill i can start having sex with my boyfriend now... so she wouldnt put me on it... then the month after all this. after my period i had the same thing not as bad but it was still hurting... so now im just waiting for the sunday after my period to start up on my birth control... if your neice isnt on it then maybe you should put her on it see if it helps. but not unless you notice that this pain is a few days or like a week or so after her period... when she would be ovulating... cause thats why it hurts so much cause the blood isnt supposed to be there.
hope this helps ! and good luck

Hello, I've had this EXACT pain since I was 15 (I'm not 25) I have read several posts on the internet trying desperately to figure out WHY I'm getting these "attacks". One lady posted somewhere to pay attention to your yeast intake... so, sugary foods, white breads, beer, wine etc I did pay close attention and she was actually right. I find that if I eat for example, some brownies and have a glass of wine.. 2 days later I'm doubled over in that annoying pulling belly button pain!!!!
What happens is our bodies have a intolerance to the yeast and it gets trapped inside our intestines and over growths itself. So that explains why both men and women get it... (and why sooo many doctors tell us women that we are basically hopeless after several tests and then excused with the assumption that we must be "ovulating" or "constipated with/without gas" even though we KNOW it isn't possible!)
So please pay attention to your yeast intake, the next time you get an attack, try and remember what you ate the couple days prior to the pain. AND you can go to your family doctor and get him to prescribe a drug called( I believe to be called) Nystatin. Its an anti fungal medicine that cures anything from finger fungus to ring worm. It helps clean out your body that is filled with yeast. Or if you prefer the natural way go to your local health food store and buy some Caprylic acid - which also works. Most doctors don't always believe that you can get yeast overgrowth in your body.. but trust me, you can!!! I've read many many websites , and this is EXACTLY what causes this pain.

I had and still do have some of the pain described. I am 40 now but it happened more from 12-30. Usually worse right before my period. It would get so bad I would sweat and then pass out from the pain. I was diagosed with IBS. Irrital Bowel Syndrome. It is always worse around the menstrual cycle. Also things like gluten sensitivity and allergies to foods( dairy, wheat, corn) can play a huge part. Hormones will intensify things. Fried foods and things like beans were also hard for me to digest. I couldn't eat lettuce. After my first child it got a much better. Good diet habits and exercise help a GREAT deal!and Tums. Find out what triggers your pain.Keep a diary of foods and situations that happen before an episode. Maybe see an allergist or alternative doctor.Pain meds just make the IBS worse. Otherwise, there wasn't much I could do. Good luck. Hope this helps.
Other things could be ulcer, diverticulitus, appendicitis,Crohn's, Celiac's,Thyroid. Although these are more complicated.

I know this post is old, but I've been struggling with these same problems for the past 10 years, and I'm now 18. It all started when I had an infection in my belly button when I was 8 (which was treated with oral & topical medication). Ever since I have had discoloration in that area, and a sharp tugging pain behind my belly button... It almost feels like there's a string pulling at it. I finally found a doctor who believes me when I say the pain is real! He sent me for an ultrasound & blood work which he said would be negative, but for insurance purposes we needed to take it step by step. I'm going for an MRI next and if everything still seems normal he says they're going to attempt to surgically fix the problem, what ever that is. He has a theory that my belly button is somehow connected to my bladder that is causing the intense pain when I have to use the rest room, or when I stretch in any way. Or possibly a portion of my umbilical cord that never dissolved and is causing problems. Either way they would make a small incision and peer inside with a camera to see if anything needs snipping. My back pain and cramping in this region has also been increasing recently... Who knows, maybe this will give us all answers?
