my son is 22 years old. he has no serious medical problems and is in good shape. last april, he vomited for about 12 hours (we took him to the hospital and he was put on an IV). the next month, the same thing happened. again, we had to take him to the hospital because he was so dehydrated from vomiting. now, about 9 months later, he left to go on a cruise. he left on saturday, and since then (today is monday), has not stopped vomiting. again, he was put on an IV because he was so dehydrated.

what is wrong with my son?! please help, we've taken him to a specialist who looked down his throat and couldn't find anything..let me know if you have any similar situations. i'm desperate :-(

no, he has no pain. he vomited for 72 hours straight, and it stopped for a few days. then, tonight (about 2 days later) he started vomiting again. we took him to the hospital and they gave him an IV and some anti-nausea medication and he was fine. took him home, just now (about 2 hours later), he started to get sick again. i am so desperate and worried, please give me some information!
key facts:
-vomited for 12 hours straight (april, '09) location=college. no changes in diet
-vomited for 12 hours straight (may, '09) location=home, no changes in diet
-vomited for 72 hours straight (march, '10) location=cruise ship (he JUST got on the boat and immediately got sick)
-vomited for 5 hours SO FAR (today, 2 days after previous incident) location=home, ate salmon & pasta tonight..

no abdominal pain, no real changes in his diet!

Lau,

First off please stay hopeful as there is obviously something wrong so there has to be something causing it. the hard part is finding out what. i was first thinking of something called a pseudo-obstrucion somewhere in his small intestines. my cousin was diagnossed with this be he has dabilitating stomach pains along with severe bouts of vomiting which require hospitalization and medication to control. his too are compleatly randome. another thing i was thinking about may be an inner ear problem. the inner ear deals with balance and coordination and can lead to lots of nausea and vomiting if severe enough. simmilar to when people get motion sickness. the fact that your son got sick as soon as he got on the boat sort of tipped off the possibility of an inner ear issue. does he get dizzy or experience vertigo or loss of balance at all durring these vomiting episodes or just before them? also has he had an MRI or CT scan done or any other diagnostic tests including blood work?

thanks. 8)
