For the past three months, I have suffered from severe abdominal and back pain. I have missed more than 60 days of school this semester alone. I have had 2 EGD's (upper scopes) and a colonoscopy because my gastrointerologist was convinced I had either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. My symptoms were eventually blown off as IBS. I was told nothing could be done and even though I was in severe pain, I could not have narcotic pain medicine because it would irritate the IBS. During a particularly painful attack, I made the decision to go to a different hospital's ER for a different perspective. I had a CT scan in the emergency room and told I had enlarged abdominal lymph nodes. I was admitted to the hospital and seen by a general surgeon, gastrointerologist, and an OB/GYN (to rule out other problems. Mesentaric adenitis is commonly overlooked. In fact, in the ER before the doctor came to explain the CT results, the nurse told us everything was normal! The condition is so painful that 20% of all appendectomies performed are actually due to mesentaric adenitis NOT appendicitis. The duration of mesentaric adenitis is not predictable and can last any where from 3 to 6 months. It can be due to a bacterial or viral infection of the bowel and can sometimes be treated with antibiotics. I am attending a very competitive accelerated medical school this fall and I have never heard of mesentaric adentitis. Unfortunately, this extremely painful condition is looked over by many medical professionals. I am still in pain daily and am actually going to be seen at the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. I am now suffering from swollen lymph nodes in my neck, underarms, and groin. I am facing an exploratory surgery to biospy the lymph nodes in my abdomen. I encourage all suffering from this painful condition to find a doctor that listens to your problems and keeps you comfortable during the time it takes for mesentaric adenitis to run its course.
Hi, I know this post was over a year ago, however I was wondering if you ever found out what was wrong. My 12 year old son is going through this for a year and a half and he has had 2 colonoscopies and a endoscopy. We went to meet a surgeon and he wants him to see a pain management team. I have changed doctors and still no answers. His lymph nodes have been swollen for a year and a half and his small intestine is swollen. the surgeon says that this is signs of Crohns and the Gastro. doctor says no because she biopsied the whole colon. His pain is so badand I don't no what to do. Please share any information you can with me. Thank you
Have they tested him for celiac?

Firstly i just want to thank you all for writing about your experiences. As saddening as it is, it provides some comfort to know that i am not the only one going through this. I have been having the same problems as almost all of you for 6 months now; severe pain in lower right abdomen, constipation, passing of mucus, gas/bloating, nausea, lethargy, joint aches, night sweats/low grade fevers, feeling extremely cold and spaced out. As my mum has Crohn's ileitis we thought that was the problem, especially since we share the same symptoms. I first had a colonoscopy back in August with the same Gastro my mum has been seeing for the last 17yrs, which presented as normal. I then went on to have a barium-meal follow through which showed wall thickening of my ileum. Next was teh MRI which also showed the wall thickening, so the gastro gave me a 'soft diagnosis' of crohns. Following this i had a gastroscopy and capsule endoscopy (pillcam), which was normal, so he then decided it wasnt Crohn's and sent me to a gynae. Prior to seeing her i went to ED as the pains were severe, i was very pale and had a fevere. They did nothing for me besides drug me up on endone and codeine and do ultrasounds which id already had and were normal. When i went to see the gynae she did a laparoscopy to check for endometriosis and also removed my appendix to do biospies and everything came back normal. After i had recovered from the pain of the surgery i noticed all my original symptoms again. I went back to the gastro who put me on nexium and motilium to try and help the symptoms, but no noticeable improvement. I have recently started seeing a general physician who is renowned to be the best in my area (about 50 yrs experience). He sent me for an ultrasound which showed swollen abdomial lymph nodes. That then made me realise that perhaps the numerous lumps on the sides of my neck (about 20 in total) may be lymph nodes, not muscle knots. I also felt a lump in my right groin which i thought was a knot and have been having terrible pain through my groin and inner thight for the past 15 months, since an 'adductor strain' which put me on crutches for a month. They never got to the bottom of that either, even after multiple ultrasounds and mris. I still get the pains, generally when my right SI joint is out of place due to my pelvic tilt and scoliosis.
I havent seen the specialist for the results yet so not sure what to make of it. I do however know that my mum has experienced enlarged lymph nodes this with her Crohn's. Im trying not to think about the possibility of lymphoma.
If anyone has recieved a diagnosis please respond as im sure everyone who is still posting messages one here would be anxious to know what the cause was. I will be sure to let you all knwo if i find out whats wrong with me. I wish you/your families all the best with getting back to full health.
Stay strong..

I couldn't totally except this so a friend convinced me to see a new Doctor and we did extensive. Testing for advanced Lyme disease. This was very expensive but worth it . All of his Lyme test previously were neg. after I did the all of those extensive test he was actually positive on a few of test. We just started treatment and they said it will get worse before it gets better. I will keep you posted if you keep in touch .google advanced Lyme disease symptoms .

To everyone who is experiencing the little lump above the belly button that goes away if pressed upon, but then pops back up, it is probably just your immune system - swollen tissue or lymph nodes - reacting to all the bread, barley, wheat, rye, beer, etc you are consuming. I have the same problem which has just developed recently after weeks of suffering from gas, acid stomach, and sensitivity due to GLUTEN INTOLERANCE or CELIAC DISEASE (this is basically advanced gluten intolerance). I realized that I have been self-medicating my gluten intolerance all these years by smoking lots of weed, pot, cannibus, marijuana which would suppress my immune system and mask my gluten intolerance until I stopped smoking. I thought the gas and acid and other stomache problems was just marijuana withdrawal, but it was really the gluten intolerance kicking back in. I have cut out all the gluten from my diet, and now I don't need to smoke pot constantly (which was expensive, albeit enjoyable). The bump above my belly button has diminished within just a couple weeks, hoping it will completely disappear here soon. Eliminating all gluten from your diet will benefit you in many other ways as well, so if you get the bump (or not) definitely try that. If eliminating gluten doesn't cure you, it could still be a different food intolerance or a food allergy that is causing the lump.

Thank you so much for this post. I had sigmoid colon surgery in November 2011 and suffered from swollen abdomen, pain, ibs, and so much more since then. The Dr. said she could not explain my issues as nothing showed up. A ct did show a few small mesentric nodes but she blew it off as nothing to worry about. I am grateful to know that this might run it's course and go away. It has been about two weeks since th Ct and the swelling is subsiding some, so hope I am on the road to recover. I also had swollen nodes everywhere, with full left side swelling from the ankle to the clavicle, again no known cause. Everything seems to be getting better so I pray that your illness also truns around. This post saved me from thinkinh I was CRAZY!! Thanks so very much for sharing this.
