I can relate to what is spoken here. After reading about SIBO, what is mentioned seems to fit.

But I would like to add something I discovered that helped me - note it did not cure me, but it did significantly lessen the pain and such - was to take enzyme pills. I get mine at The Vitamin Shoppe. Look for an enzyme that covers a multitude of substances (protein, carbs, lactose, cellulose, etc.). I get the kind that is a powdery substance inside a casing that can be pulled apart such that the powder can be sprinkled on the food (which apparently works better than just swallowing the pill).

I hope that this information is helpful.

I had the same problem... after big meals my stomach would hurt so I would lay down and it would get so much worse. I'm pretty sure is caused my some displaced nerves in the spine causing an excess of stomach acid to be released... pretty easy fix would be to properly stretch your spine often. especially before laying down or even after eating or working out. hope it helps good luck

I had the same problem.  Hurt every time I lay down, halfway between my belly button and sternum.  Sometimes I would hear gurgling, then the pain would start.  It escalated to the point it was happening every night, and very hard to sleep.  If it didn't come on right away, I would wake with it in the middle of the night.

My family doctor thought reflux or heartburn and tried my on PPIs.  No improvement.  Gastroenterologist scoped me - normal.  Family doctor suggested it might be 'bile reflux', and suggested we try Sulcrate - which coats the stomach to prevent acid or bile damage.

Four nights since I started Sulcrate, and I am much much better.  Each night has been better than the last. I'm not sleeping on a wedge anymore, and the pills held off the pain last night for 6 blessed hours of sleep.

I'd be interested in hearing if any of you get a similar result.  Something to think of, anyway.

I have experienced the exact following symptoms for 4 consecutive nights while trying to sleep: "I have found that my stomach/abdomen becomes extremely bloated and distended plus lots of pain and gas if I lay down after a meal. I notice these symptoms after standing back up or rolling over to my other side and then I am miserable and in pain for about one or two hours afterwords"

It felt really bad but I kept on looking for a solution and I am certain I have found one.

I noticed a clear pattern during those 4 nights.

-Eat dinner at 8:30 pm

-Go to bed at 11:30 pm

-I can't fall asleep, my body temperature won't fall, I'm tensed and anxious

-At about 1 am I get out of my bed fully bloated, even breathing hurts...

-I then poop a mountain.

The solution every single time was simple...I just had to poop. Yes just getting all the stool out of my system is the way. Once this is done, I can have 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. No matter what I try, this is the only solution.

This would explain why so many of you go to your doctors and come back with a "There is nothing wrong with you". Many doctors don't connect the dots and are pretty much ignorants...

This helped me tremendously, even if I get bloating and pain I know that I have to poop.

On nights where I manage to c**p before going to bed I have no problem at all...

I hope this will help some of you...

OMG! after about 5 months of bloating and pain, seeing PCP and GI doc, did Ultrasound and endoscopy (found 1 polyp and removed it), numerous blood and urine tests, everything came back normal. No celiac or H Pylori.  Doc just said it was my diet and told me to try Align probiotic and Benefiber and suggested I try the FODMAP diet (eliminate EVERYTHING?? from my diet for 4-6 weeks, I don't think so). I finally found this site!

I noticed the bloating and cramping (lower center abdomen) was almost always after I wake up from my afternoon nap but I don't get the symptoms when I sleep at night. I always sleep on my left side.  And sometimes I eat super late and go to sleep right after. And if I have a BM after my nap, my stomach feels much better.

Other symptoms I have been feeling are sporadic pain under my armpit (spleen?),  upper ab under chest, and just above hip bone, all on the left side.

I don't know what is wrong with me and it's driving me crazy. Doc asked if I wanted to do a colonoscopy but I really don't want to deal with the prep so I've been putting it off. And my dad has pancreatic cancer.

I would love if someone has symptoms similar to mine and they found a solution.

All my docs think I'm a hypochondriac and don't think there is much to worry about.

I have also had this problem since I was a little girl, even if I rest in the afternoon without sleeping, I rise with a horrible stomach ache that takes awhile to subside. Any solutions would be so helpful!

I first noticed this problem when I was a teenager forty years ago-I worked out a few things that help somewhat but I have never talked to a professional as I have always had too many other more important health issues that I could not "fix"myself and I try to avoid being labelled a hypochondriac as I have noticed thats how  doctors generally think when one has many problems that they cannot "fix".I know from my life experiences that for me this is a gas problem not acid reflux. As someone already said taking digestive enzymes with meals and snacks helps lessen the strengh of the pains but for me the best thing is to not lay down or even to sit in lounge chairs for about 3-4 hours after eating so do not eat too close to bedtime. Also in my case if I eat red meat or even too much white meat taking hydrochloridic acid capsules(tablets can get stuck and they will really burn the oesophagus so stick to capsules-internet supplement companies have them if chemists etc don't)help a lot,Try to move around if possible after eating as well and when sitting sit up straight-don't slouch for hours after eating.Walking for at least 20-30 minutes helps a lot especially if I eat a heavyish meal-even an exercise bike helps considerably or walking on the spot lifting legs and swinging arms(hard at first but I assure you it's not hard once you do it regularly-watch tv at the time ,it feels weird but it gets the digestion moving and is better than just waiting for pain to go so you can go to bed or whatever .Gas tablets such as charcoal help too. Also avoid carbonated drinks.I notice that if I break my rules soon after eating(or even just fluids)the pain is above my navel but if it's been quite a while it's more likely below my navel and less servere.Even massaging the painful area in a circular fashion and do some sit-ups or similiar or yoga holds helps a lot.I do not know about everyone but I know as I have got older my digestion (and activity level)have slowed and I am sure this is due to my lack of digestive ability-I am very careful to not overeat as a consequence and to not eat too many different things at a time and this helps. For me eating some foods really can produce these same pains without laying down so I just avoid or minimize them-this  wasn't the case many years ago.No one else mentioned this but it eventually dawned on me after many years of this that I am virtually incapable of burping which means I can't release gas upwards which  has something to do with the extent of this problem for me-maybe the valve above my stomach is faulty and I should see a doctor about this.Maybe also this is part of the problem for many people on this site-I had a girlfriend once who had similiar pain and I recall that she would only do very tiny burps (not on purpose-she wasn't restricting a large burp to be polite)repeatedly for hours on end because thats all  she could release at a time-she also had digestive problems as she sometimes had very bad breath(and she was only 18 ate healthily and was very fit).Anyway I hope this helps someone as reading other comments has been helpful in at least seeing it is somewhat commom.Good luck and please post any helpful comments.

Hi all, I found a solution that helps me deal with the same problem as yours: it's a backward stretch of the spine

My story:

since 2 or 3 years, gradually worsening tummy starts aching a little when I lie down, and with a peak of pain at 4am that would usually wake me up, usually with nightmares, dry mouth, hot body, increased heart rate, urge to pee, tummy distended, and  most annoying for me, big hard-on that could be painfull and absolutly not associated with some erotic dreams. All these symptoms better for a release of gaz (that can be hard to pass) and mostly by sitting up or walking.

It seems that some abdominal aorta's plexus (autonomic nerves of the digestive system) are very irritated by some sort of mechanical pressure which I struggle to determine (I'm an osteo).

Now, I've been noticing that a backward stretch has been helpful. Could be the stretch of the bridge, but not all can do it, and beware it need some preparation for your shoulders. Google it and follow instructions. Otherwise try to do it on a swissball, or standing. You should feel your upper tummy stretch. Anyhow, just arch backward!!!

I sleep like a baby if I do it before going to sleep. What a relief! Please tell me if it worked for you.

Yes, I cannot lay on my back without problems with my stomach. I know I have a serious gluten allergy and cannot eat oats as well. I have an elevated CA 125 test and am female. I would like to know if you have any updates on your health. The doctors don't know what my problem is. I have not been positive for celiac.

Gluten initolerance? Oats are also to be excluded from your diet to be gluten free. You should try Colic Ease, using 3 teaspoons prior to laying down. It works for me. Don't use soy unless it gluten free. Most chocolate is not gluten free. Most of it has soy.
