Hi all,

I also experience this problem. I believe that (for me, at least) it's probably related to swallowing too much air.

Here are factors/bad habits that contribute to my swallowing too much air:
- Mouth breathing.
- Eating too fast.
- Drinking too fast.
- Eating a few large meals instead of more smaller ones.
- Drinking with or after meals.

Like others mentioned here, I too cannot burp.

I used to have a different gastrointestinal problem that was almost certainly caused by swallowing too much air, because it was triggered by long runs, drinking carbonated beverages, and really stuffing myself full of food at buffets. I would start salivating a lot (which causes more swallowing) and get more and more nauseous until I would "throw up". Nothing but air ever came out.

I stopped doing the things that triggered that problem and I no longer experience it. Nowadays I've also become far more sedentary, and now I'm experiencing abdominal pain after lying down on a very frequent basis.

Swallowing air might not be the sole cause (I wonder if maybe I have a bacterial problem in my gut, or something else, too), but there's no way that swallowing air and being unable to burp it out can be good with regards to bloating and gas. I've read (not sure if it's true or not) that when you're lying down air is more able to pass from your stomach to your small intestine. My theory is that the pain is the air working its way through the intestines until the eventual fart, after which things always feel a lot better.

Note: I've never experienced the problem sleeping or during the night. But I usually eat 4-6 hours before going to sleep and rarely sleep on my back.

It is due to taking in air through your mouth. You need to be sure you breath only thru your nose

For a while now if I lay on my back for too long my stomach will get upset. If I'm laying in bed I always have to roll onto my side to relief the discomfort. It will usually subside after about 10 minutes or less. It often bothers me when lay on my stomach as well. I have not be able to figure out why. Its actually nice to see I'm not the only one.

Im reading this post a year later so I don't know if you will see it. however, I do face the same problem when laying down and have found two things that really help me. one - Activated Charcoal tablets. the one I use is Acticol available at Boots. it has Mint oil in it as well and relieves the pain in five mins.
two - the wind reliever position. its a yoga move I've found, that helps immediately (you just need a flat surface to lie on). you basically life your legs straight up and support your lower back with your arms while lying down. breathe deeply and come back to start slowly. the gas built up will immediately release.

This is my first post and am thankful that I am not alone with abdominal pain. I wish we would read of more solutions from doctors to our problems than searching for help. My abdominal pain starts after a sudden attack of cramps, diarrhea and dripping sweats. This passes in about an hour and then the abdominal cramps start and usually last for 6 weeks or more. I don't have much of an appetite and lose around 10 Lbs before things turn around. After the initial diarrhea my stool is mostly normal throughout this time. Throughout this time I get a dull ache with some sharp pain under my ribs and lower abdomen, maybe some in the center. Doctors keep on saying it is a virus and it has to work itself through but then why does this happen once a year.
It seems that the pain is gas related because it is worse when standing up and better when laying down. When I passed "air" (big one) the pain stopped for awhile. Maybe when standing the gas is lighter so it levitates to the top of abdomen causing the pain and then when laying down it disperses with less pain. I am going to try Gas-X or similar to test this theory. Still try to figure out what causes the sudden attacks, I was diagnosed with the beginnings of diverticulocis.

All foods nowadays are full of preservatives a nastiness. I try like crazy to eat good for me stuff, which is more expensive btw, like flax in my yogurt. Still suffer from pain when I lay down. Dr's don't take the time anymore.

It happens to me too. I am very overweight. The pain will last for hrs unless I lay back down turn to my side and pass gas or somthing that relieves it quickly is (this is embarrassing) lifting my belly its like it redirects the gas and I pass it more quickly.

I've had the problem for at least 30 yrs. only happens after naps. Never during the night. Doesnt happen after every nap but at least 50-75%. Or just being in reclining position awake. But typically around 4-6 pm. I've taken Bentyl (dicyclomine) to relieve the pain. But no one knows why it happens. Good luck! I hope someone here has the answer.

I can relate to similar condition. Simeticon in high doses help with gas, also taking digestive enzymes before or with food. Of course, it is not diagnostic. I wonder if certain anatomy variations can play role.....
