Hi, I am very concerned about my friend. He used to be a great basketball player. Few months ago he had an accident in which he broke his leg. He had it operated but the pain he felt was unbearable. The doctor prescribed him hydrocodone. It seemed that the drug was helping him but he started taking this analgesic more often. Now he is a totally different person. Even dough he completely recovered, he gave up on basketball, as well as on his friends. Could it be that my friend is abusing the narcotics and that his behavior is a result of that?

Hi, narcotics are the strongest pain killers. They block the pain receptors in the brain so that you are not aware of the pain. Everyone who takes this kind of drug should be closely monitored by the doctor who prescribed it. The behavior of your friend points to the fact that he might be narcotic abuser. Narcotic abuse is a very serious condition and can lead to taking stronger drugs such as heroin. He is in danger of wasting his whole life. You, his friends and his family should try to intervene. He may not be aware of his behavior. Intervention is accomplished by facing him with the fact that he is abusing drugs. Tell him that he is destroying not only his, but also lives of his family. I really hope that this will help. However you should make him see a professional therapist who will help him overcome the addiction.
