I need advices on breathing while running. Apparently I don’t do it properly since I’m gasping for breath after only a mile. What can I do to improve my breathing? I’ve always had that problem, even when I was at school, but I always thought it was because I didn’t exercise running at all. Now that I exercise several times a week, I’m still confronting that problem.

I guess that several pieces of advice that we can give you here won’t be enough for you to learn how to do it properly. You’ll have to ask somebody who is a fitness instructor or an athlete to show you the exact pattern. Once you learn it, you won’t have to think about it while running. It will become automated action, just like breathing when walking. But you can try to improve your running if you increase your lung volume. You can do that by deep breathing exercises. So, that a very deep breath while counting to five, then count to ten holding your breath and after that while counting to five gain, breath out. Repeat this exercise 10 times every day. This may not solve your problem, but will sure help.

I starting doing a breathing pattern that has helped me out considerably.
I take 2 in breaths, 2 out breaths, 2 in breaths, 2 out breaths. Very quickly. Until you get used to this breathing technique and when you start your run for the day, you will have to take short, quick strides. Do a breath every step you take. In Step In Step, Out Step Out Step
