Yeah, I developed this very problem 3 months back, and still have it. I started out on Biaxin (for a sinusitis infection), didn't do anything (except killed off all of my good bacteria). Lately I've been on a steroid-based nasal spray, it didn't seem to do anything whatsoever, besides reduce my immune system to the point of me catching a really bad cold. My problem seems to come with a host of other unpleasant symptoms as well, including insomnia and night-waking, post-nasal drip, muscle aches. Depending on the amount of liquid I drink and how my head is tipped I'll have 100% in one nostril and like 15-25% in the other (sometimes dropping to like 2%), sometimes it switches sides as rapidly as like 30 seconds. The mucus is WHITE and as thick as elastic, and only comes out with excessive blowing, that and clear fluid. It's annoying and I wish it would go away. Here's my theory on it, I think persistent sinus problems are the result of food allergies, likely stemming from a candida infection (which is fungal based and is not effected by antibiotics - in fact antibiotics tend to make the problem worse). Anyway, I'm in the process of cutting out foods that feed yeast infections, hope it helps.

I've got the same problem as long as I can remember myself. It's not good for me because I sing, and it makes me sound as if I'm singing up my noseand it doesn't help with my breathing. I need help with this because it's quite annoying. Is there any surgical procedure u can undergo to get rid of this problem?

Glad I'm not the only one with this strange alternating congestion that switches with an obvious transition period where both sides are rather clear. why why why is it alternating?!! if it's a deviated septum or a polyp wouldn't that just stay fixed as opposed to alternating?

This is normal and it is called, "The Nasal Cycle".  See:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_cycle

I have the exact same problem as bkmj1mtym!  I would very much like to hear if anybody as had this cured and what the treatment was!  My doctor has tried Nasonex and I'm currently getting allergy shots but nothing is helping!  The only thing that provides temporary relief is Drixoral nasal spray which now makes it worse the next day.  Please help!!

Wow. The same exact thing happens to me. I thought I was the only one. I don't understand why this happens, though, since I don't have any allergies. This has been going on for as long as I can remember, and I can't seem to find any relief.

I think the thing that really stinks about it is the fact that I primarily breath out of my nose.

I have problem breathing during night sleep. My lower side (I sleep on my stomach) gets congested 100%. It gets progressively worse closer to morning hours. When I alternate sides the congested nostrils alternate as well. I don't have excessive mucus problem. I am experiencing this issue during night sleep ONLY. Otherwise, during the day, I am totally fine. I've tried most of natural remedies to no avail. Went to 3 ENTs and all they could say that I have dust mites allergy, and prescribed steroid based decongestants. But dust mites allergy usually starts at a very early age. This issue appeared about 4 years ago (I am 41). I'm trying to stay away from any prescription meds, due to side effects. So, I won't use any steroid based prescription c**p. I need to find the real cause! The funny thing is that when I travel (and I travel a lot) this issue stays with me where ever I stay (hotels, beach bungalows with open air, etc.) So, it doesn’t look like dust mites allergy. Does anyone suffer from the same issue during night sleep with no excessive mucus problem??

Whenever I have any nasal congestion my nose does the same thing at night but only at night. If I have a cold both sides will be congested during the day but as soon as I lie down one side opens up and if I turn over it swaps sides.

I thought this was just a normal way the body keeps you breathing while sleeping. I'm 72 and I first became aware of it when I was a little kid. Of course I asked my mother about it and got the usual no answer.

Gee, I just realized, mothers are a lot like doctors. After my heart bypass surgery I had plenty of questions. Every time I described something to a doctor he just kept writing notes, nodding is head, and gave me the same no answer.

It looks like the majority of doctors are absolutely useless! Nowadays they teach them how to treat particular symptoms with meds. All they can do is to write a prescription for the drug that in a long run will fcuk you up even more! Then you come to back to him and he will write you another prescription and the vicious cycle continues until you're crippled or dead. Do not expect any proper diagnosis from those imbeciles. They're all after your money, nothing else matters for them.

Here's an answer four years in the waiting. Ever walked into a grocery store and found yourself amazed at how crisp the air hits your nose even though thousands of people run through it every day? Their secret is an ionizer air purifier. It does the same thing to your sinuses that methenol or mint does. Try removing all bread products and corn products (even corn syrup) from your diet for 2 months and see if you notice a difference. Most people don't realize these foods are natural allergens for everyone worldwide because they're actually grass -- and we eat them all the friggin time!
