It happened to me after my friend accidentally landed his knee on my nose. A lot of blood was wasted and something like a thin bone came out of my nose. I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want my friend facing any enquiries in school. I was bleeding for two days and after that it bleeds at least once in a day for a week. I thought it would get better soon as I was an athlete. After a week it stopped bleeding and I thought it has cured. A few months later I was starting to have breathing problems. One day while I was sneezing I noticed a part is missing in my nose.
Now I have grown up and while I run, the person who is apart two metres can hear me breathing. That was irritating. This alternating nose blocking thing screwed up my life. When I practice my body temperature goes up and up and I would feel like the heat comes out through my hands and feet and some iron smell comes out from my sweat . I am in need of some one to point me in the right direction

Hi was addicted to sudafed nose spray used for about 3 months and now I'm cold turkey with it. I am on day four and its driving me mad because it's only one side of my nose getting clogged when I sit or lie down. If I lie on my right side the left unblocks but the right is severly clogged the same happends on the other side? combined with a pressure feeling in the nostril that's cloged. Have I caused some turbinate damage or mabey a sinus infection?

Hi all, I also have had similar problems. I thought that I had a deviated septum until for the first time in years I decided to sleep on the other shoulder and amazingly the mucus shifted and I was able to breathe through the opposite nostril. Anyway to cut a long story short I have been using XLEAR with XYLITOL. Have tried loads of other sprays but this one seems to have helped a little. Worth a try - as claims to be non addictive.
Hope it helps.
I am not a doctor or affialiated with XLEAR.

I am exactly same as you. What your ENT doctor suggest? I believe scanning the sinuses could show any hidden problem.

I believe it may be due to a deviated septum which causes you to get turbine hypertrophy that will cause pain in one side which will alternative due to the nasal cycle but will be 10 x more obvious and irritating especially leaning on one side.
Google pics online and see if your nose looks the same and check inside both your nostrils to see if the bottom lower part of your septum is pushing to one side more like i have. You will need to have surgery done to push it back in place. I have this myself and it greatly reduces my quality of life so an hour surgery is very exciting for the future.

Aside from illness related congestion what TheDefintionMan says is correct. If you avoid corn, wheat and possibly even rice and eat from a wide selection of fruits and vegetables and lean grass fed meat and pasture raised chickens and eggs you will find your mucus will dry up and your breathing will normalize. You have to eliminate all dietary things that cause mucus production and inflammation. I loosely follow the diet called Paleo. Google it and give it a try. You have nothing to lose except the congestion.

I have had this alternating nostril problem as long as I can remember. It's really bad if I have a cold, and I'm now subject to bronchitis which I get about once a year. I found that breathe right nasal strips help me breathe easier at night and my wife says I do not snore if I use them. Right now I am miserable with a viral cold I picked up somewhere; nose, sinus, cough leading to laryngitis, and sometimes nausea.

In my case there is very little mucus! Inside my nostril gets swollen. They alternate when I alternate sides while trying to sleep. As soon as I open my eyes in the morning everything is gone. I breath normally during day time.

What's bad about that, would you rather have them both blocked up? Hard to sleep that way.

I have very similar symptoms related to sleep (wake up/tired). While awake I breath about 50% from one nostril and 5% from the other, and while sleeping about 15-50% from one and 0% from the other. I don't recommend taping your mouth if you have an upper respiratory problem since you could deprive yourself of oxygen, you're probably better off trying to do the opposite (tape your nose) purely at a sleep standpoint.

If you have sleep/headache and upper respiratory breathing problems (nasal congestion as an example), I hear UARS is a possible diagnosis. I have also heard of people having success with mouth-guards meant to treat snoring, that might work for example if you have no nasal congestion.

Guys,

I have the same problem as posted earlier. I did an allergy test and found that I'm allergic to dust mites. I did scans and figured I also had chronic sinuses and deviated septum, which were both corrected surgically. My doctor claims my sinuses are clear. But I still have the alternating breathing disorder, where one side gets almost completely shut and it starts to pain in the nose bone and behind the eye for the shut side.

@ Dr. Dhruv you mentioned this could be due to congested sinuses. I did have chronic sinusitis but it was cleared using a surgery and the doctor claims my nostrils are clear. It was bad before the surgery but this condition persists even now.

@ Other guys following this, have you found any clear cut treatment for the alternate blockage ?
I had tried anti-allergy medicines, took for a 2months and didn't see any significant difference.
