Please see my full reply below. Dr. Dev Abraham at the University of Utah does this procedure for hot nodules. I hope this helps.

Hi Michelle:

Was your nodule complex (mostly solid) or mainly cystic? My understanding is that PEI works primarily for fluid-filled nodules.

Also, how was it determined that you had an autonomous hyper functioning nodule if you did not take the RAI?

Hello, I have had a large primarily cystic nodule for over 4 yrs. All test results (I get a panel of 11 tests done at Theranos) are consistently within optimal range. Tomorrow I return to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN to receive PEI. I really pushed for RFA (radio frequency ablation), but it does appear I am a better candidate for PEI. If they would not do either procedure for me I have/had an early Apr appt in Italy for laser ablation. I contacted Dr. Gharib at the Mayo, and Dr's Papini and de Feo in Italy. I think Dr. Guttler in Santa Monica also does this procedure, although he seems to make a lot of sense he gets terrible reviews. I will keep you posted on the results. Best of luck to everyone with finding other/better options to surgery!

Hi. Would you mind updating on your experience at Mayo Clinic? I have been trying to find a doctor who will perform, or even discuss, PEI here in Massachusetts, but have been unsuccessful.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing. My sister is in the same situation, she's had multiple nodes/cysts in her right side of the thyroid and the doctors have recommended surgery. The blood tests are all fine, that is her thyroid os fully functional and she doesn't have any symptoms related to hyper or hypo thyroid.
We're looking for alternatives to surgery but not sure about any iodine supplements.
Can you please give some info on it ?

Dear Michelle,

Thank you. I believe we are all in the same boat. No surgery cuts or nuking. I've heard about PEI and done research as yourself. Many of us are seriously thinking about going to Italy for this procedure. I've also heard about this wonderful doctor in Utah, as well, as two others in Santa Monica, California and New Hampshire. In this incredible country (USA) of ours, why isn't there more facilities that will do this procedure. I live in New York, and can you imagine this big metro city, not doing the procedure...unless I haven't heard of any. If any of you kind people hear of this procedure being done in New York, please give us the information. Seriously thinking about trekking to Utah. Good luck to all. And Michelle, please give us an update your on journey. Thank you. Loretta

Ethanol ablation will work on cysts but not solid nodules (because where is the injected ethanol going to go). I had that done about 3 yrs ago and my cysts shrunk. What the doc does is he will first aspirate the liquid in your cyst (to empty it) and then replace the same amount aspirated with ethanol.

Now 3 years on I've developed a solid benign nodule. It's growing every time I go for my scheduled ultrasound scan. I'm now considering radio frequency ablation or high intense focused ultrasound. Wondering whether anyone has opted for radio frequency ablation or high intense focused ultrasound and what the experience was like.

I was recently diagnosed with multinodular goiter. Last night, my endocrinologist recommended a TOTAL thyroidectomy. I am having second thoughts since my thyroid functions are normal. Neck ultrasound shows 4 nodules on the right and 3 nodules on the left. Most of them are solid. I am 37 years old and I live in the Philippines and health-care here is very expensive. I am doing some research and currently looking for alternatives. Any information will help. Thank you! :)
