my son is only three months old and is also shaking his head back and forth he has for about a month now. i'm guessing just because he is fighting sleep because thats the only time that i ever see him do it...

i'd just like to say to the guest users who are passing this off as imitation, most of the mothers are talking about tremor-like behavior. in my son, you can distinguish between imitation or a display of excitement and uncontrollable, seizing-like head bobbing. that kids begin to play and shake their head is recognizable. please don't be rude to parents who are concerned with a change in their child's behavior. a parent is the one person who should be able to detect when something seems abnormal.
most of what ive read on the net points to ear infections and teething.

Does anyone have any conclusive results that explain this behavior? So far everyone is expressing concern about their child's behavior - but nobody has any type of explanation for it after having seen a doctor, etc.

Our son is currently undergoing testing for Infantile Spasms due to some other strange, seemingly uncontrolled, tremor-like motions he's been displaying lately. His EEG was on Monday and we don't have the results back yet.

He is also teething.

He also has mild to moderate reflux.

When our son does the "no" head shaking (which seems uncontrolled) his eyes also dart around and sometimes look as if they're rolling back.

It would be awesome if some of the folks who posted their problems here would come back and post the solutions.

My son is eight months old and also just started this "no" head shaking. Me being a first time mom of course wondered if anything was wrong, but my husband made the observation that when we say no we automatically shake our heads, I think that's it. He will randomly do that throughout the day but doesn't cry or seem like anything's wrong, so I don't think it's something to worry about. We really have to remember to nod when we say yes to see if he repeats that!

Have you gotten the results yet? My 5 month son has been moving his head from side to side. He is teeting, as well.

Would like to know if this is something to worry about...

Thanks.

my daughter had the same symptoms of shaking head. i asked all my family and friends and they never heard of it or seen it before so i got very worried. i asked my doctor and i even recorded her behavior and it wasn't serious as long as she was not losing consciousness or affected her breathing so they ruled out seizures. the doctor suggested we do EEG scan and that came back negative. So the doctor told us to just keep an eye on it and he felt it did not seem to be anything dangerous since all around she was a healthy and active baby. if it started to get worest then we may have needed to do more testing. my daughter started doing this around 5 months old and it has come and go. at 1 years of age she only does it once in a blue moon but it got shorter and very less frequent. At all her doctor visits he always ask me about her head shaking but it appears to be decreasing so until now i still need to keep an eye on it. they are not sure exactly what it is but feels its nothing serious to be concern about and it doesn't bother her or interfer with any of her activities. she is a very healthy baby girl who is growing and developing normally. i was very concern due to my baby had breathing problems when she was born because when i was giving birth the doctor was nowhere in site so my baby was stuck there but the staff was telling me it was cause of the position she was in that was causing her to have her breathing problems...whatever. she was in the neonatal intensive care unit for a week but it mostly due to her jaundice but other then that very healthy girl. i know this post is old but i hope this helped anybody out there cuz its very hard to find any info about this issue.

Thank God I have a place where I can discuss this issue with others in my situation. My son started this head shaking thing, like saying "no" since when he was 3 months old. He is 11 months old today but the head shaking has not stopped. Sometimes he stops, sometimes he shakes it. Sometimes he does it deliberately, like when he notices that he is being imitated. But then my wife and I can tell the difference. At first we thought it was because he was so fat. He has cut down since he started walking, but no change. The doctors we have seen say it will probably stop on its own. But when? I have a cousin who shook his head till when I last saw him (when he was 16). I hope this will not be my son's fate. Can someone help us with information on how to stop this?

hello! this is the first site i have found that isnt trying to put the fear of god into me. my 7 month old does the head shaking also. i have no idea when i started or how ferquently he does it. he doesnt seem hurt or sick. in college i had a roommate who has seizs and i know very graphicaly what they can look like. these arnt seizs, but an ear inection it most certainly could be. i breast feed him for 14 weeks and he weened no problem. he was also 3 weeks early so that could be a factor. i'll call the ped tomorrow. thanks for not freaking me out!

My son started shaking his head "No" a few months ago, and usually does it when he's happy or playful, he's now 11 months and still does it at times, so I don't believe its a cause for concern.. just baby learning/exploring.

I am so glad I found this online. My son just started doing this when he turned 8 months. I was so worried that is a sign of autism or something. Anyone else chime in on this?

My ten month old daughter shakes her head very similarly to the other parents' descriptions... it seems to be a common/normal thing. I agree with the parent who likened it to hand clapping. We've also just recently started shaking our heads no at her more than before as she is beginning to test boundaries & explore more. I wondered if I should be more worried but am pleased to hear other kids her age doing the same. There are no signs of ear infection, so it seems to just be something they realize they can do so they keep doing it! :-) Thanks for your stories.

Thank you everyone! My 8 month old has been doing this for a week and I was starting to worry about autism as well. It definately seems to be a normal behavior for this age.

My 9 month old son started doing this last week. I totally freaked because it seems like he can't control it. I spent the night in a Pediatric Hospital and the Neurologist said that there is nothing to worry about. He also said that he sees this a lot and it goes away with time. He explained it as a tick. I am still going in for an EEG on Tuesday. I am not sure if this is related, but he got a flu shot and it started a day afterwards.
