I had a total hysto on Oct 6, 2006 and since then have not been able to urinate on my own. I have been cathed several times and now have a home cath. I am on antiobitics right now and also muscle relaxers for the bladder, which seem to help me go on my own, but have to severely push the urine out. If I get too full and it hurts then I cath myself, but try not to do that too much.
Doctor says that this is "normal" after surgery, but it has been 3 weeks since surgery and still cannot go without pushing so hard. Has anyone had this happen to them post surgery and if so, how long will this last??
So frustrated.....oh and also, if I cath myself, will this prolong to my bladder functioning correctly??
Thanks
Julie

After my vaginal hysterectomy I had urinary retention. I complained about it for eight years. The doctors kept telling me nothing was wrong until it started effecting my kidneys! I couldn't get the pee to come out at all sometimes, couldn't get all the pee to come out other times and couldn't tell I had to go until I was so full I was in pain. Now I have an implant much like a pacemaker that stimulates my bladder muscle to contract. Yay Emory!!! It works very well most of the time. I still have some circumstances where I need to cath but it is heaven compared to having to cath 5-6 times a day. It doesn't help with the sensation of needing to pee though. I guess it's best just to try every three hours or so just to be safe.

Hi Julie, my name is Vicki and I had a total hysterectomy in August of 2010. They did the procedure laproscopic and everything was fine when I came, but I noticed I was unable to urinate at all when they removed the cath. Even the next day, they asked how much I had been and told them I hadn't. They sent me home anyways, and the day after I went home I was in so much pain because I could not go, I ended up back in ER for them to drain the bladder. Needless to say, that began I horrible nightmare and chain of events I still suffer from various effect today! I was wondering how your recovery turned out and maybe could help you with some different ideas if your still having problems. Though I hope you have recovered completely, I'm here if you need to talk as I continue to be confused!

I noticed this was posted over a year ago, so I hope you see my reply. I am having similar issues, not as severe. But there are times where nothing comes out. I am using ice and walking to stimulate the bladder so I can go. I am very concerned this problem could regress. I would like to know what doctor you saw at Emory for this implant, or who I could contact for help. Thank you! Glad you finally found someone to help you!
