Hi Alan Ive had this going on for a bout a year now..yes your spine can cause this..especially since you have compressed disc...I have bulging discs in my neck..anything to do with the spine can affect these type of symptoms..you need to have the MRI so that they can rule out CSF leak..that too can cause the issue. Now ..if you are showing no other symptoms..another root cause is a virus that gets into the inner ear and destroys the hair cells in the cochlea..and believe it or not..its like a cold..you can get something as simple as a cold and yes this too can happen. I have had MRI, CAT Scan and I have Had four surgeries since september for ear tubes and that did not help but I have been told though that if your neck and spine are spasming..that this could be the culprit..I am currently seeing an ENT NEuroligist and Neurosurgery..if the spine is sitting on a nerve then this can happen. See Neurosurgery and get the MRI..that might be your next step which is neck surgery. take zyrtec for the vertigo my ENT says that it reduces inflammation in your sinuses and will make the vertigo go away..MY ENT is a specialist and has been doing this type of work for 30 years knows his business..so unless you are allergic to zyrtec and its over the counter now you can take one a day and it will combat it and you wont feel it so much. Now there are several things that can cause what is going on like Neuralgia but the compressed discs or ruptured discs in the neck can cause these same symptoms..I hope you find relief the only thing I can say that brings me relief is 600 mg of motrin at night..and a heating pad..sleep unelevated on one pillow so that is stablizes your neck..sleeping elevated makes it worse.. Hope this helps you out and definitely get the MRI it will rule out brain tumors, brain aneurysms and other potentially fatal problems..that can mimic these same symptoms..not trying to scare you but it will ease your mind if the results are negative. take care and hope you have a better day.. lynn

Hi Lynn - thanks for the very informative reply. I'll print this and take it to my dr next visit. I did have a brain MRI a few months ago and it was negative, so I guess I can quit worrying about that anyway. Funny you mention sleeping on one pillow... I usually sleep on my left side due to sinus congestion, etc. Lately I've noticed if I can manage to sleep on the right, the symptoms tend to be better the next day.

I've been taking Allegra and the nsaid. I'll give Zyrtec a try and keep pushing for the cervical MRI. If I don't get anywhere soon, I may ask for the name of your ENT.

I'm so glad to know there are others dealing with similar problems. Thanks again!

I hope you are  doing well now.  I experienced vertigo, nausea, ringing, and loss of hearing.  The vertigo was the worse, I could not leave my bed, or my home, episodes happened 2-4 times a day.  Prior to this I had seen ENT, had a procedure, that gave me relief for about 6 months, but episodes came back, hearing loss is worse, and tinnitus is louder, than before.  I found information on Meniere's,( this is what I'm dignosed with) and chiropractic: Michael T. Burcon (read about his research on Meniere's), and  neuromuscular dentistry.  I have been seeing an Upper Cervical chiropractor, for my neck, and a neuromuscular dentist for my TMJ disorder, and have my life back!  the vertigo is gone, tinnitus is still there, but I can leave my home, and live again.  I hope all of you can be helped like me.

Hello everyone.......I have had the problem for 2 years now, dizziness, vertigo, fullness in the ears when I wake up, fuzzy head, hard to concentrate, neck aches and a bunch of odd things, forgetting things having to write things down.

At it worst could not sleep, vertigo , odd eye disturbances, huge pain in the back of the neck, difficult to travel and could not use a computer as it would make my feel sick and tired all the time. I ended up depressed as I thought I was going mad and that no one believed me. The worse was the loss direction and fuzzy head feeling like I always had a heavy head cold. It felt like my brain was over heating when I had to concentrate.

Like many of you I was put into brain scans, MRI, CAT Scans, muscle test, MS tests, hundreds of blood tests in fact I spend 8 months in some of the best hospitals having tests..and they found nothing .......eventually a great ENT doctor told me I had problems with balance in the ears and something had attacked the inner ears and most likely the Cerebellum.
I had a nose operation to straight the nose channels and clear the blocked areas. This helped some, but what was great is that I understood why I had felt so bad. I did a lot of physio which also helped in particular neck stretches.

I then went to a hospital that works with crash patients the were very interested in the back of my neck. In short they explained that vertigo causes the neck to tighten and the cerebellum. This area of the brain pushes all the signals around from ears, nerves down the spine even the optics.

So what we have a triangle, you get more vertigo the body tries to correct, it tightens the neck muscles the cerebellum gets impacted and the vertigo gets worse. Round and round it goes.

The other issue is that if the inner ear connectors to the brain are damaged they try to meant themselves by reconnecting back up but they are now a little off centre so the brain has to work hard to rebuild the balance connections to the inner ear and brain. Bad news is you have to do the things that make to you feel bad to get the brain working again. Its hard work but pays off.

I tried everything to discover what was triggering this , I kept a diary of what I was eating, my sugar levels, my blood pressure my temperature nothing much changed or indicated anything that would trigger an attack. When I say attack, I mean when it gets worse. The only thing I can be 100% of that the following things make it worse....

1/ Sitting on a laptop for more than 20 minutes at time.
2/ Colds send my brain into a spin and it takes weeks to get better.
3/ Train travel on a slow train the rocks about more then 20 mins.
4/ Sleeping on my back or front.
5/ Caffeine
6/ Soft or memory foam mattresses
7/ Having a cold
8/ Underground trains

I do know what helps it.

1/ Doing lots of stretches of my back and neck every morning and evening
2/ Balance exercises
3/ Resting when I start to feel tired
4/ Acupuncture in the neck
5/ Using visual balance exercises ( stare at a letter stuck in the middle of checker board and move the head left to right )
You can find these on line or speak to your doctor they are used for people who have head injuries stops the eye from juddering and helps the brain to process the information its seeing automatically instead of you having to think about it too hard )
6/ Sleeping on my side with a pillow between my legs
7/ A dose of pregabalin 50mg - 100mg  which ensure I get a full nights sleep and seems to calm the brain down.

What caused it ....well best guess from the consultants and brain chappies is a nasty viral or infection of the inner ear and cerebellum......

I am still on the road of self investigation and discovery and would be happy to share any information with those who may need it. not sure if am I add my email address here but I will if anyone want to contact me. _[removed]_

I am looking to write a book on this once I have exhausted all my tests and trials of what medicine and physio and alternative medicine has to offer.

Take care everyone and stay in touch.

In addition to the above if you have just a fuzzy head, vertigo and you face goes a little numb at times see a dentist because an infection in the root of a tooth can break through into the cavity that runs up between the Nasal area and ears. This also can cause symptoms similar or cause existing vertigo to be amplified! I know this from experience.
A simple xray will show the infection up and it worth having the tooth pulled to allow the infection to be targeted and cleaned.

Also agree with previous statements about having neck work to release the muscles and trapped nerves that also affect Vertigo, usually after sessions things seem to get worse but after  day or so they calm down.

In short don't rule out any treatment and take a pro-active approach don't just wait for GP to guess what might work.

Cheers Lee

I had all your symptoms and finally went to an ENT and was diagnosed with Meniere's disease. You can live with this.. Do not eat any salt and eat whole, pure foods, no junk, no alcohol, no coffee or pop. stresss also will cause Meniere's attacks. you can also take a diuretic to help but I did not as I could not tolerate them. get checked for Meniere's disease. Many people have this and it goes undiagnosed.. Blessings

I'm feeling the same, ears are clogged I can tell when I speak dizzy, nausea, headache forehead feels little numb when I rub my forehead. A couple of years ago I had vertigo I haven't get it til now. I'm not sure if it is vertigo or sinus but I don't have a cold its weird. I'm worry about this situation, I think I might have too go to ER.

Sounds like meniere's disease to me... I was diagnosed last year, I am now managing better, guess understanding the disease and acceptance helps. I lost hearing in my right ear ( moderate hearing loss ) and now I use a hearing aid and the tinnitus is minimal now ( unless i remove the hearing aid)... the dizzy spells have reduced drastically - guess I am in remission. Hope this lasts....

Don't wanna scare anyone into overreacting but in 2000 three doctors including an ENT misdiagnosed me and almost cost me my life. Unexplained ringing in the ears, dizziness, nausea can also be caused by, as in my case, a very large AVM on the dura mata and DAVFs into the brain. Dr. Don Kim in Houston saved my life TWICE. Walter Reed gave me up to die after 2 failed surgeries. It is rare but don't let ENT tell you as they did me, " You're just going to have to live with the tinnitus! " I'd be dead years ago~

I hope this helps someone...I have been suffering with vertigo, swimmy head feeling, feeling deatched, pressure behind eyes, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath after eating, weird pains and numbness off and on in limbs (mostly on one side), stomach problems, heavy periods, feeling like I had been knocked out when I laid down, for almost a year..I was in a yoga class when it started with a buzzing feeling on the right side of my face... .I saw my family doc at least 7 times, an ENT, an endocronologist, a cardiologist, a gastroenterologist, an OB, an orthopedic surgeon (because I have bursitis in my shoulder and thought I might have firther injury), NO ONE helped.  I had two chest xrays, an MRI, a cat scan, an ultrasound, many rounds of bloodwork, etc. and NOTHING.  They put me on Meclazine, flonase, four different antibiotics, prednisone, cortisone, cefdinir, zyrtec, saline nose spray, Mucinex, ear drops, the list goes on and on.  NOTHING HELPED.  My next steps were to see a neurologist and an allergist.  I finally decided to go see an upper cervical chiro on the OFF chance that a few comments I had seen on the internet about upper cervical misalignment being the cause of these types of symptoms.  He did xrays and low and behold my top vertebrae in my neck was twisted.  Well, after 7 months of absolutely NO relief, ONE adjustment later I felt 80% better.  The foggy feeling was immediately lifted. I didn't feel dizzy for the first time in months.  My sinuses started actually draining instead of feeling blocked, and the pressure in my ears went almost completely away IMMEDIATELY.  If you are having these symptoms like me, of course you should rule out all the serious stuff first, but I just cannot believe no one caught such a simple problem with a simple fix.  It was an injury all along.  If you have the same symptoms for a seriously long time and the docs have found nothing wrong despite all tests to rule out everything serious, you should consider trying an upper cervical chiro.  He literally, as the last poster said "gave me my life back" in about 2 hours.

my mother has had the same thing, twice in the last year. they don't seem to have a diagnoses for her yet. no tumor or MS, thank God. She feels like there is water in her ears and has projectile vomiting that produces liver bile....

I had this for a year and tested negative for Meniere's. I was told it was migraine-associated vertigo, silent migraines, crystallization and more. I was house bound and bedridden most days. 6 hospitalizations in 4 months. Doctors tried everything and i kept getting worse. Brain fog was severe, too. I started the Autoimmune Protocol elimination diet in January 2014. I realized Candida overgrowth was an issue so started addressing that as well. Within 4 months I was working again and 6 months in I had my last vertigo episode. I haven't had any meds since January because I haven't needed them. I still have slight tinnitus, but hearing is normal, brain fog and migraines are gone. I only use diet and supplements to control it. I consulted a DNA specialist and work with a naturopath and holistic chiropractor. I am now 10 months in and almost feel back to normal. If you aren't getting answers with the medical community, try the holistic route.
