Ok for one Viruses do go away or everyone would still have the first cold they ever got for two... You can never get the same virus twice. So if you have HPV and you got it from your boyfriend he can never give it back to you. But there are many diff. strains of HPV. you can get a diff stain from someone else. You doctor would be the one to talk to but I have been going through cancer caused by HPV so I have asked all the questions.

Hi there, I'm a gyn onc nurse. Many of things you said here are true, however, I want to make some clarifications regarding Hpv. Yes, it's common and most people will be infected with one type of HPV in their life. It takes on average about 2 years to clear the virus. YOUR partner can' t RE INFECT YOU WITH AN HPV STRAIN YOU ALREADY HAVE. BUT YOU CAN BE REINFECTED WITH A NEW STRAIN THAT YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE. SIMPLY- if you've had sex with your partner to unlikely share Hpv strains.

This is very frustrating to read. HPV is a virus and there are various strains of them. Some varieties (16 and 18) are known to be associated with cervical cancer. Others are associated with Genital Warts. And yet there are strains that have no symptoms. You CAN get multiple strains. I have both 16 and 18. The virus never leaves your body. However, your body/immune system can learn to fight the virus / keep it at bay where it doesn't cause harm to your body.

Think of your immune system as an army defending your body. When HPV takes over you can detect where they have caused damaged as abnormal cells in your cervix. When the LEEP procedure removes much of the harmful virus/cells and gives your body a chance to learn how to fight off the virus. Typically the body DOES learn how to deal with it and you may not ever get abnormal paps again. Keep in mind your immune system will be more capable of keeping the virus at bay if you are healthy. That means, healthy eating, exercise, sleep, etc. The healthier lifestyle you live, the stronger immune system, the less likely virus can cause havoc.

A simple example of how viruses work is the flu shot. There are many many types of flu viruses. Each year medical professionals try to predict which flu strain will be the most prominent. The flu shot is actually a weakened form of the virus. When you get the shot your body / immune system learns to spar with / fight this weakened flu virus. That way when you encounter the virus later it knows how to fight it.

Here is a great resource explaining viruses, the immune system and vaccines.

Hi, also live in Houston. I thank you for the detailed information. I tested positive for HPV 2014. I had a LEEP on Jan 2015. Now, in October I tested positive for HPV CIN 1. I fear to go back to my OBGYN, who is probably going to repeat an invasive procedure again.

I had my LEEP surgery few weeks ago. I had moderate to severe dysplasia before. Me and my husband doesn't use any protection like condoms since before. So i worried he's also infected by me. Im scared that if we have sex again it would go back again to me even if im already cleared after my LEEP procedure.

Your "boyfriend" gave it to you? You make it sound like it was your current boyfriend. Actually, you may have given it to HIM, passed on from another guy you had sex with, so don't be so fast to throw the "boyfriend" under the bus, sweet cheeks. He is at risk for penile cancer, just so you know. So unless you were a virgin before you met him, there is a very good chance you may of had it prior to him, and that YOU gave him the gift that keeps on giving. Oh, the narcissism of modern millennial women never ceases to amaze me. I feel bad for your boyfriend, not you.

Hi "Guest" I live too in Houston and just read your article. I am supposed to have the Leep procedure under anethesia on the 31st but after reading your post I feel lik ei should go to MD Anderson like you did and will have better understanding of my case. I was diagnosed with HPV 16 just a few months ago and CIN3 this month. was very shocked as always had a normal Pap. do you remember who you saw there? I feel bad switching up my OBGYN for this but really feel we are blessed to have such an amazing Cancer center here in Houston. I know I DONT have cancer its just pre cancerous cells, but its still terrifying.

There was a lady who posted that she had married her high school sweetheart and that they had been married for over 20 years. He was her only partner and she had never strayed or cheated but obviously her husband had an infected partner. That was the only way she could have received the virus. So, both males and females should not be promiscuous. Good luck with that in this world!
