Hi, my friend's father suffers form Parkinson's disease. My friend tells me that the most difficult problem his father has is bradykinesia. I often say I can understand how difficult his situation is, but the truth is that I have no idea what bradykinesia is. Could someone explain what does bradykinesia mean? What are the symptoms of this condition?

Hi, bradykinesia is a term derived from two Greek words and means slow movement. It is the most common symptom of Parkinson's disease. People with Parkinson's disease move their muscles at the frequency of barely one hertz while the normal frequency is four to five hertz. But this is not the only problem with bradykinesia. More importantly, people affected by Parkinson's disease have problems with finishing a movement. This means that they are not able to, for instance, complete a full step. Also bradykinesia causes a person to sit very still. This means that your friend's father doesn't move his head or cross his legs while he sits. A face of a person with the Parkinson's disease is often mask liked and lacks the expression. I hope now you have a better understanding of bradykinesia and your friend’s father condition.
