I am concerned for my sister-in-law. Her youngest child is 14 months old, she also has a nearly 3 year old. A couple weeks ago, she thought she had a hernia, she was having a lot of pain in her side. The doctor took x-rays and found she had 3 broken ribs. The 'story' is that they broke during pregnancy (yes, baby was huge), but had started healing incorrectly and her working out was causing the pain. Can it be possible for this 'story' to be true? If the ribs have been broken for 14 months, shouldn't they have been causing pain and discomfort for much longer than the last month or so? I have a problem believing this 'story'

Yes, it is possible. I broke two ribs during my pregnancy and my child wasn't huge. It can be caused from all of your insides being smushed up. Mine are still healing after a year later and are mainly uncomfortable. It isn't always painful. My pain only happens when wearing bras for extended periods of time. The problem with a pregnancy breaking your ribs is that it takes longer to heal because your insides are still settling back into place after the baby is born.
