I got my helix pierced in April and ended up developing a keloid. At first there was just a barely noticeable bump, but then it grew noticeably about three weeks ago.

Throughout this time, as I had a ring versus a stud in my ear, is that it was *constantly* getting knocked around painfully. About every two weeks, either someone or something was flipping the ring up, ripping what scar tissue was forming free, and often making it bleed--hence why the keloid formed. I'd tried the saltwater approach to no avail. The only thing it was doing was making my skin shed like crazy.

Eventually, I went back to my piercer a week ago and asked if he could change it, since there was little chance it would ever heal with a ring if, no matter how careful I was, it just kept getting caught on EVERYTHING. He changed it to a labret stud. It hurt like heck to get it changed, but almost immediately after--and since--it has felt immensely better. He recommended tea tree oil, which I've done inconsistently since. The keloid is gone, the persistent soreness since I got it is gone. I can even sleep on it now!

This is likely due to 1) it's not getting caught on anything anymore, 2) tea tree oil applications once a day or so, 3) the fact that the labret is straight (rather than the ring, which is curved, in what would be a straight hole through firm cartilage--not a good combo), and 4) the flat back of the labret lends some compression onto the keloid.

This is not, of course, a definitive conclusion for how everyone will heal a keloid. But my suggestion is to either choose a stud/barbell for the piercing in the first place, or get it changed to one. Say "no" to rings until it's fully healed and you don't have to leave the jewelry in question there for months on end. It cost me $10 (CAD) and it was worth every cent.

TL;DR: Eliminated a cartilage keloid by changing from a captive bead ring to a labret stud. Tea tree oil helped mine; salt water did not.

I had a keloid come in on my lobe from an ear piercing. After a surgically removal, the keloid came back bigger than it originally was. I have been doing some research on a freeze treatment. The surgeon told me before the surgical operation that the keloid would more than likely reoccur. Hope this helps.

I am very educated about piercings , had excellent jewelry and my body still formed a keloid on my ear. My body is prone to scar tissue so it just happened. I agree all the things you mentioned can cause issues with piercings but sometimes it just happens anyways.

Hi so a few years ago i got a piercing in the upper part of my ear and got a keloid right off the back. So everyday like twice a day I would take a q-tip and fresh tea tree oil and smash the heck out of the keloid with the qtip dipped in tea tree oil.It hurts but i didnt care because i wanted it gone and it is gone now. The tea tree oil dries it up. Not only put it on top of the keloid but rub it around the part ofearing that goes thru the ear on both sides so one wont form on opposite side. If twice a day isnt working try three times a day. Mine went away, but your daughted has to be able to put up with the pain from applying pressure. But yes IT REALLY WORKS!

I peirced my a couple months ago and I have a keloid. I just boiled some water and got a rag and dip it in there.(Be careful cuz its hot!!!) Then you just dab the area and dabbed and let it sit. It stung certain places but it wasn't unbearable. It reduced the redness and it decreased in size. I did this every other day and after a week it was gone.

Hey I've got keloid scaring on my ears from piercings and I'm going to the doctors today to get steroid injections as mine are only small and the doctor decided this was the best treatment for me,, always try to ask the doctor for a recommended treatment first and then if that doesn't work use home recipes such as tea tree as they normally work,, DO NOT HAVE THEM SURGICALLY REMOVED!! My friend tried this and she then had a bigger keloid scarring grow back as do the other 45% of people. I recommend trying as many possible treatments as you can and sometimes combine treatments too!!

I had a big one on my ear, hated it for years, tried cutting it of myself. It doesn't work grows back . One day I decided to tie it with dental floss since its strong. I wrapped it around it and left it like that over night. My keloid turned purple, I tooked it off and did it again the next night. I just thought, let's cut off blood circulation to it. Weeks later my keloid scar slowly went down in sizes. I'm so happy you can't even see it no more. It really works
