The stapedius muscle may be overactive, causing a high-pitched "tick" sound. See the tinnitus page for more detail about stapedius muscle myoclonus. They cut the muscle to stop this.
The stapedius reflex can be measured using the "Acoustic Reflex test". http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/anatomy/ema.html

I had this same issue for 24 years already. I had seen ENT doctors from 3 different countries including here in the States and none of them cured it. I do not have any allergies. I believe blockage in the Eustachian tube is really the issue. Lately when the popping sound is so eminent, I noticed that there is dry BIG dead skin inside. I know for sure its not an ear wax. It was hard to take out because it clings in the skin itself. One time I pulled a thick one shaped exactly like a tube, and looks like a dry blood or pus to me. Now, I understand as to why my doctor lately told me to see her every time my ear pops. The doctor use an apparatus to to flash that nasty dead cell out! There should be a way to prevent this....and my doctor is not telling me. I guess it will take another doctor to figure it out.

This may sound over simplistic, I have had a mild case of clicking in one ear for the past three years. It would come and go, but enough to be distracting at work and college. I tried ear candles from the local health food store, and it seems to relieve it for a few months or so. When it comes back I use the candle and it goes away.

Try ear candles from the health food store. They relieve the popping for me. They draw the foriegn material out of your ear in a natural inexpensive way. They have saved me a lot of money, and aggervation from
the popping in my ear.

I have a click in my left ear which has been there since a skydiving trip in 1998. Since then I am constantly clicking my left ear "in and out" I would describe it as what happens when you "clear your ears" going over a mountain pass, going up or down on an airplane, or when you have a head cold. Except it never stays in the cleared position. Very frustrating. Sometimes I think I must look like I have TMJ or something. I hear fine, I don't have ear infections, I don't have sinus infections, I don't have any other symptoms of any kind.

After having the spasm thing in my ears for quite some time I had found I was having more twitches as I was falling asleep than normal, some big enough to wake me up and so in investigating those I read somewhere about how magnesium supplements had helped, as apparently sometimes when folks are deficient they can have twitches and such. I decided to give it a try and it worked for me, both stopped with the nighttime random ones but to my surprise also took completely care of the ear spasm thing. I still have problems with the clicking and constant pressure issues, but the incredibly annoying thing at least went away pretty fast after I'd tried taking some magnesium supplements. Just thought I'd let you know :)

My left ear is also clicking everytime, after I swallow. Somtimes their are multiple pops or clicks. Very irritating. I am able to aleaviate the clicking for an hour by squizzing my nose while holding my breath and pushing air out of my ears, forcing my ears to pop. it

I have suffered from "clicking" in my ear for many years. I can control it and make it click. I read on a blog/message board to push your tongue to the roof of your mouth. I start by pushing up on the soft palate and mash my tongue up as hard as possible to push out the air trapped in the eustachian tube. I do it over and over as many times as possible and it works. Look silly doing it, but it does work. The first time I tried it, I slept all night and upon waking the next morning realized it worked! And it lasted for almost a year, until I got a cold and then I had to perform the exercises again. Hope this helps others.

I suffer from clicking in the ear for approximately two years. Mine is every 3 1/2 minutes and the clicking goes for exactly 18 seconds and then relief for 3 - 3 1/2 minutes, then it repeats. I've had ear exams, hearing tests, CTs and no results came in. My doctor says that it's just something that I "just have to live with" because there's no apparent reason for it. It affects my sleeping, my balance, and I get headaches from lack of sleep. Are there any suggestions on how I can go about this annoying problem?

I have the same thing. Only hear it when I am laying on my right side. Just started a few weeks ago. It is driving me insane.

I've had this for a couple years as well. I noticed it was only happening in certain places and figured out that it was due to pulsed radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. This is referred to as "microwave hearing" or the Frey Effect (after Alan Frey).

i have clicking in my ears. it is an alien and that is how my alien talks to me. click. LOL. see, it went "click" right when i wrote "that's how my alien talks to me" (it clicked me, when i wrote that). i call my alien CLICKER, of course. my alien's name is clicker.the thing is, this clicking is also in my sinuses but that happens only when i ignore the clicking in my ears.what's interesting is how i can interact and get the clicking just by ASKING. and then i'll say, okay DON'T click and it won't. but then i say click and it does (just did, LOL). and again! it's so funny.it's clear and certain to me that there IS some conscious intelligence that's doing it with intent to get my attention. it's SO much fun. IT says HI when i pay attention and it seems to love me a lot. i brought clicker out to meet people. the dogs in the neighborhood acted remarkable around me. one woman walking her dog had to stop because her dog stopped and was just staring directly at me. i told the dog's owner that the dog could see me and that's why the dog was staring at me. then, another dog, when it saw me - it laid right down on the ground as soon as it saw me. so, yeah. i'm one of those "hybrids". i'm part human, part alien. something like that. and MY clicking is like a supernatural thing.just thought the whole entire world ought to know. i still would like to have somebody look in my ears (because the clicking is in BOTH ears) because i want to know what they'd see if they could see the clicking happen. like, "mechanically" what would that look like?
