During routine Pap smear that I have been doing since I was 20, I didn’t think something bad could happen to me. I was always thinking that was something that happens to women with bad luck. Anyway, result of my Pap smear didn’t look good at all. My doctor told me it is serious and called it CIN II. I want to know more, though I know it is not good.

CIN II is type of cervical dysplasia, which means disordered growth. Normally, while looking at the lining of the normal cervix under a microscope, we see layers of cells. Normal distribution is that the bottom layer is made of round young cells. As they mature, cells rise to the surface and flatten out, so surface is made of flat cells. Cervical dysplasia means there is lack of this organized growth process. Mild displasia is called CIN I where only few cells are abnormal. CIN II is moderate dysplasia where abnormal cells involve about one-half of the thickness of the surface lining of the cervix. CIN III is severe displasia or carcinoma in situ, where entire thickness of cells is disordered, but they are not yet spread below the surface. CIN II is less likely to regress back to normal on its own then CIN I. In 40-50% of the time it is possible to get better. About 20-30% of the time, moderate dysplasia or CIN II will progress to severe dysplasia and about 20% of the time it will persist. Most of physicians prefer to treat CIN II although is possible to wait and monitor it to see what the course will be.

CIN II or CIN III is not death sentence and it can be reversed by doing a LLETZ procedure. Getting CIN II (Moderate changes of the cervical cells) or CIN III (Severe cell changes) does not mean u have cancer yet but if left untreated it will for sure develp into cervical cancer. So please get it treated. I have been diagnosed with CIN I in June 2007 and went back for a 2nd confirmation test 6 months (17 Nov 2007) later and i was still a CIN I. I went for a LLETZ (07 Jan 2008) to remove the damaged cells and the Dr removed some flesh sample for biopsy and on the day of my LLETZ procedure i was on CIN II. Today 18 Feb 2008 i was given a clean bill from my 2nd biopsy test 6 weeks after my LLETZ procedure. Every damaged cell on my cervix has been wiped out completely. Its not a cancer sentence if u can treat the CIN as long as u do as u are told my the Dr and do the test as prescribed by the Dr. I will have to go again after 3 months for the same test.
