Even if a drug has many side effects, it doesn’t mean that it won’t work. SSRI drugs take about 3-4 weeks to start working and only after that time, you may notice a difference.

Side effects are just something they learn to deal with. Many of the side effects disappear in time while many persist.
Two persons may not experience the same side effects and if side effects from a certain drugs are report, it doesn’t have to mean that everybody will go through the side effects.
Some side effects can be managed, so talking to your son’s doctor about managing the side effects would be the best thing to do rather than just discontinuing the drug.
