so I was driving out to see my sister a year ago and while I was driving I felt like a huge stream of warm liquid had poured into my pants. I thought that for sure I had started my period, so I stopped at the nearest gas station and when I checked there was no blood...it was clear fluid. I know for sure I did not pee my pants because I had just emptied my bladder right before I left the hose. After that incident I started spotting blood for maybe 2 weeks and then I started bleeding pretty heavily with small clots once in while for another week or so. I ended up going to the doctor because I started to feel pretty weak, I am assuming from the blood loss. The doctor performed an ultrasound because she believed it might have been a miscarriage but she found nothing. Till this day I have no idea what happened:( I am now on birth control pills to regulate my hormones and this has not repeated itself. But I would still like to know what the whole bleeding and clear liquid was all about...

Hello
This has just started to happen to me. I am 26. I can not be pregent as I am a vergin. Clearn liquid during period not as much blood as usual. This is my first peroid on medication to reduce flow. Could this have somthing to do with it. I also have diareah and constipation during my periods. And noramly very painful periods with large clots and somtimes bits of pink flesh. This period has been painful but not as much as normal but there is so much clear liquid I end up looking like I wet my self as tampons and pads together is not enough!

I found this page searching for answers to the same question. It is so frustrating, I go through more tampons than I ever have. Its so bad that I have to change them almost every 1-2 hrs. There very little blood, if any at all. This has been going on the last day or 2 of my period for the past several months. My doctor just looks at me like I'm crazy.

Glad to know I'm not the only one, even if no one knows why.

This is absolutely normal.  Your body cleans itself, and it is completely natural.  Sometimes women experience clear liquid that fills the tampon quickly and smells a bit fishy, usually it occurs 2 to 3 days at the end of your period.  This is your body naturally cleaning yourself.  Sometimes it can be brownish, as well, which is just flushing out old blood.  Depending on your body and the type of birth control you use, if any, you can have more or less, brownish or clear, smelly or no odor.  It really depends on the individual.  Either way, your body is just cleaning itself.

Yesterday and today I went to take out my menstrual cup and found not quite 1/4 oz of clearish liquid.  At first I thought it was urine, but it didn't have any sort of strong odor.  After looking through some comments online, I also considered the fluid that comes from sexual excitement, but that comes from an opening near the urethra, right? If someone could just analyze the fluid, I'm sure we could figure out what it is. I'm not sure the fluid will happen to me again during this cycle because I'm nearing the end, but I suppose I could wear my cup one more day for science sake.

Here's my medical history as it pertains to this case:

 - I'm 26 years old.

 - I've been on oral birth control for the past 10 years

 - I am sexually active, maybe once or twice a week.

 - I've used a menstrual cup for at least 8 months if not longer

 - I slept with my cup in (which I've done before with no issues) and do not recall any sexual dreams.

 - I've had no recent changes in lifestyle that would account for the fluid.

I have the possible answer. I researched vigorously when this happend to me. The clear discharge is your uterus cleaning itself and lowering the amount of toxins that are released during your period. It is making the environment more stable and livable for sperm. It commonly happens towards the end of your period, ovulation, and during or before intercourse. Its perfectly normal and is basically just a sign that your vagina is in good working order. Hope that helps

I am 41 this same thing just happened to me. I think for the first time, but I am not very observent of these things normally, I generally try to ignore it. Anyway I just wanted to add that I haven't taken birth control for 20 years so I dont know if this helps prove theories or not. I think after reading everyones testimonials though, I may ask my doctor to check for these cysts everyone is mentioning. Hope my input helps and thanks for everyone's posts. I was a little scared till I read them, but now I will be able to sleep.

I too have had the same experience. Maybe for about the last six months. I am 33 and not on the pill. Anyone figure out what's going on?

I'm not sure it is leaving a tampon in for too long I had this theory but when I tried it out I still had the clear liquid. I still don't know what it is.

It's not just 'normal' 'uterus cleansing itself'.

I'm 35 years old, I've been having periods since I was TEN, and it just started this year.
If it were 'normal and usual', I think I'd have experienced it at some other point in the last TWENTY FIVE YEARS.

Nope, I don't think it's normal either.  BUT I do think I may know what it is.  This has been happening to me for almost ten years now.  I think it's cysts or fibroids that are rupturing during the menstruation process.  I've gotten used to it, but I go through a zillion tampons and pads!  About six months ago, I had enormous pain in my lower abdomen, so much so that I couldn't walk, talk, eat or breathe normally!  After about 12-16 hours, the pain had subsided for the most part, but I was still sore in the abdominal area for several days.  No, I never went to the doctor as I don't have health insurance, but the gushing fluid during my period is not as bad as it used to be.  I think something burst.  Now I do still experience the same symptom, but it has subsided somewhat.  So ... my assumption is that there are still things bursting in there and menstruation is what causes them to burst!  Just my story and my two cents, for what it's worth!
