It stays forever unfortunately. The good thing though is once you see it become red or pinker than normal just pop 2 ibuprofens get some rest, don't stress too much a drink some water and you can usually prevent it.

Hi, just wanted to say that I didn't know I was getting cold sores on my chin for years (the docs kept on saying it was impetigo), anyway went to a skin specialist and found out what they were. Did a bit of research into light therapy for cold sores and so far so good, had a bump coming up recently and it went back down again... so fingers crossed. Anyway, just wanted to share that with you - hope it helps!

I think this thread has been hijacked. It is not about how to prevent cold sore or how to treat it. It is about cold sore leaving behind a scar or crater/dent.

I had something like a cold sore but it did not hurt at all unless I put pressure on it. It healed but now after 3-4 weeks I can see a tiny dent where the bump used to be. I have dry lips and I chew them a lot so I had not noticed this dent until I stopped chewing for a couple of days and used petrolium jelly and then I noticed the little dent.

My lips are light pink and this dent is darker pink so it's noticeable. Also it looks like the skin over it is peeled off.

I doubt it will fill in because it has been almost a month!

Hey I've been having the same problem. I had three big cold sores starting about 3 weeks ago. My first ever. two above my lip to the left and one to the right directly on my upper lip. Long story short I picked the scab off of my lip because it protruded so far off my face I couldn't handle it anymore. It scabbed again and fell off on its own about a week ago. It left a crater-like bump on my upper lip and the two on the skin near my mouth left pink blotches behind. After using a lot of suggestions I've read from here I bought something called scar zone from my pharmacy. It's done a great job of reducing the pink spots on my skin but is only slowly healing the crater on my lip. It's a sunscreen too, almost acts like a concealer as well which is good because I'm a guy and make up just isn't something I'm willing to get into. Hope this helps anyone else googling frantically trying to get back to work.

Well here's sonething you already know.STOP PICKING AT THE COLD SORE not only will it reopen the wound make the healing process longer but it can also spread the virus to another part of your lips and this has happened before to many people. So why try to rush the healing process by causing more harm? By the way use Zinc oxide ointment it helps heal scars or use neoprene.Trust me it works and its facts these things contain ingredients that help with scaring and fast healing okay my friends.

Like most of you, I, too am dealing with a light pink scar on my lip. It's been 6 months since my first and only outbreak, and I have the feeling my scar has gotten a little bigger. Why? Well, I could just be really insecure, but I think Mederma is the reason I even have a scar. I belive it lightened my lip and now it looks like a light pink scar. So, for those of you with light pinkish lips, maybe Mederma is the way to go. I'm going to try this "Scar Zone" and "ST IVES SKIN RENEWING" and see if either work. Glad to know I'm not the only one out there with this problem. Good luck.

for people who have a dent/missing pigment on their lips.. massage the area where the pigment is missing as this will speed the healing process up by a lot/promote blood flow to the area. this is like the only thing that i think could heal this missing pigment.

I am 62 and my scars are still there. They look worse the older I get.  I picked at mine thinking they would form a scab and heal faster. NOT the thing to do. Keep your hands off of it and let it heal. Don't mess with them at all. There are a few options to diminish the scars....bleaching cream, mederma, vitamin E or laser peel are a few.
