I use a ventolin asthma inhaler whenever the mucus wont clear (usually bedtime). It breaks up the mucous and provides relief within a few minutes :)

Hiya just come across this post while research things, I had the same problem for years, it was so back that I was sick a couple off times in the day for weeks at a time, but it was only when I coughed with was caused by the build up off flem. I have been a smoker for years and years now but never connected the two, I quit smoking about a year ago now and noticed that the build up off this sticky mucus was less but still there and effecting my daily life, it was only when I started having pains in my chest just under my breast and shooting down towards my belly button, cus I am a serve suffer off headache and migraine Daily I am on pain meds daily for this a few times a day. It was only when I went to the doctors about these pains that test were undertaken and something unusual was found that I wouldn't off ever considered, they found a large stomach ulcer in my upper tummy below my breast, it was the size off a orange apperntly I was then taken for scans and xrays to determine the dangerous or risks to it and I was told there wasn't any risk and the reason I had developed this stomach ulcer was because off all the pain meds I was taking for headache, I started asking question to the symptoms it can cause as didn't have any that I would off connected to it, the docs said.that a big one is mucus build up and clump like feelings in my throat, I was put on antibiotics and anit acids and instead off taking meds for my headaches I had to injected myself with pain relief to avoid more damage to the stomach ulcer, it's been about 6 months since I found this out and have been on the new meds and haven't had a issue with mucus since, I started to notice symptoms after a few weeks off finding out for example everytime I ate rich foods or fatty food I couldn't keep it down for long and developed a sore throat that I had for months, maybe it was the meds taking effects I don't no but I feel a he'll off a lot better since finding this out, I never had any symptoms off this issue apart from the tummy pains every now and again, it could be the one thing u didn't think could cause this issue that is actually the problem, hope this helps x

Have you been assessed for asthma? I am asthmatic, have post nasal drip and GERD. This seems to be a common triad for us poor souls. You could start by asking to see the asthma nurse at your GP's surgery, I don't think you even need a referral. This problem needs a multi-disciplinary approach, and you have to start somewhere. Also if the nurse feels you may have asthma, her input will carry a lot more weight when deciding the next step.

I have the same thing. Got my nose checked at nose ear and throat. Said nothing they can do and that it sounds like rhinitis (allergies). I've tried everything the doctor has given me, in the end they said nothing they can do, I just have to live with it! I also constantly blow nose, if I don't I often get a big lump of mucus shoot back my throat! I do take mucus cough medicine when it gets bad and I've found that's helped loosen it.

I may have the answer for you all. Please look into Histamine Intolerance and/or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. I have made significant progress reducing the amount of phlegm in my throat along with other symptoms magically disappearing (like constant nose and ear itching, skin rashes, exhaustion and more). Symptoms vary greatly with histamine intolerance so it is hard for doctors to recognize. It may involve medication and definitely involves reducing the amount of histamines you eat. There are tests that your doctor can give you but the best way to immediately find relief is to look up a list of high histamine foods and avoid them like the plague. It can take a couple days or more for your body to feel the changes so be patient.
Hope this helps you guys. Oh, and check out Low Histamine Chef for some well researched information.

Wow, I'm shocked by all the responses to problem! I'm a long time sufferer and must always carry a good supply of tissue to deposit glob and must fight the urge to examine my product. I've taken all kinds of medications, but mostly the problem is dismissed. I doubt that there's a cure.

i started having a lot of mucus build up in my throat; I felt like i was drowning in it. I was having to constantly clear my throat.
Once I eliminated bread from my diet, I discovered that the heavy mucus cleared up. To test my theory, I started eating bread again and on the third day the mucus came back again. I stopped eating bread and after a couple days the mucus was gone...it may be a gluten issue?? Its at least worth a try...I hope this works for you.

Hello all!

I suffered 8 months with the aggravating "ick" trying everything just like you all. I eliminated it being bacterial, viral, and candida. The only thing left was fungal. I googled fungal throat infections and fungal sinitus came up. All the symptoms matched, so back to google for a remedy and found BORAX. Yes, the detergent booster. It's a natural anti-fungal. Started with half a teaspoon in a liter of water every other day and my throat cleared within a week. My mother has it, too. I believe it's highly contagious. I can't convince her to do the BORAX, so she's probably reinfecting me again every couple months. It's not as severe, but still annoying. I can dose a couple times with the BORAX and I'm free again! You can get BORAX at Walmart in the detergent isle for around $4. If you don't feel comfortable like my mom, talk to your doctor about prescription anti-fungal for chronic fungal sinitus. Hope this helps you live free of phlegm again!

I'm also going through this same problem. What I've found to really help me is honey! Yes natural honey. It really calms down my throat and moisturizes it. At least i feel better for a couple of minutes or hours before having to gulp the honey again if i feel like clearing. So i hope you'll get some measure of comfort when you try this

Have you looked into Empty Nose Syndrome? This can happen after nasal surgery, it might be worth consulting an ENT.
