My Doctor prescribed Cymbalta for me last week. I started out at 30mg for the first 7 days and then 60mg for the next 14. Well I took my first of the 60mg and I couldnt take it anymore because all I wanted to do was sleep all week, I didnt leave the house because I was to tired and I couldnt go to work. So I called the Dr and told him I cant do this, and explained my symptoms and he took me off it and gave me Lexapro 10mg. I took my first pill last night. Well I felt dizzy all night last night and woke up with a headache this morning. I feel so withdrawn and I still feel the need for more sleep. It really sucks because I was only taking this for major anxiety attacks but honestly it made me more depressed, although it did help the anxiety. Im not sure how the Lexapro is going to work, because I do feel alittle panicy once in awhile. Anyone else ever been on Lexapro?
Im currently trying to stop cymblata for the 3rd time.. i hope to not take it ever again. Once i ran out of tablets and had some severe withdrawal symptoms.. they went as soon as i had more tablets. Now ive been reducing it from 60-40-30-20 over the last few months. Saw psych on monday and she's told me to just stop them now as its lowest dose.. and 3 days on.. its nasty.. not as bad as last time but eugh. I'll be glad when its over.. i might try the benadryl thing.. i have plenty of those left from summer
I've been Cymbalta free for close to 2 months now. Let me tell you, it was hard. Very hard. The withdrawal effects alone made me want to jump off a building. The brain shocks were the worse. It felt like lightening would go through the bottom of my feet and into my brain. There were days I didn't get out of bed.
But I slowly was waned. Going from 60m daily, to 30mg, to 20mg and ultimately to zero.
You need will power. Lot od will power, focus and determination, you can sucessfuly withdraw from it.
Good luck to ya'll.

Because of a change in medical insurances, I was no longer able to take cymbalta( the new insurance wouldn't pay for it). I did not find this out until i went for the new prescription for it. My doctor put me on Wellbutrin. I onlty took Wellbutrin with Cymbalta for 2 days since I didn't have any more of the Cymbalta. No one told me that I would have the symptoms I have, mostly brain zaps and crying.
I was wondering if being on Wellbutrin will help these go away when it has had a chance to kick in?
I feel for each of you since it appears that most of you have been on a higher dose of Cymbalta for a longer period of time. I was on 30mg Cymbalta for 4 months and am now on Wellbutrin 150SR twice a day.

I have been on cymbalta (90) since February of this year. I have noticed a problem with excessive wieght gain. I have been tapering off slowly. It has been three (3) days since I have taken any and I am experiencing sort of a "zapping" sensation. I am fine when I sit, but when I get up and move around or walk about, it starts and I get pretty light headed. Is there anything anyone can suggest?? I am not going back to the cymbalta.
Dear anyone trying to get off Cymbalta,
I feel the drug nearly destroyed me, I got to a point where I couldn't function.. I was also taking Topamax at the time.
(i was wrecked after taking the combination for 7/8 months, and have taken 4 months to taper)
I was a zombie; too much sleeping, couldn't talk properly, couldn't find words, very forgetful (memory screwed), couldn't exercise (no energy), vision problems, and the worst... I withdrew from society to the point where I stopped leaving the house except for work, bad paranoia (people following me)... etc
I begged my p-doc to get me off or find another combination.. he was concerned about suicide and said lets "up the Topamax dosage".. i never went back to him.
Found new p-doc.. better now.. off Topamax and Cymbalta.
Taking Lamotrigine (generic) and although it has its own "things" its much better. (Bipolar II, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety etc)
My advice:
>If you are currently taking 60, open the Cymbalta capsules and take out a few granules at a time.
I mean 10 granules a week till you get to half.
(its a real irritating thing dividing up the granules but its worth it. Persevere I promise!)
>Then ask p-doc for prescription for 30's.
Again, take out a few granules (1 or 2 a day) till you get to almost none.
Then stop and if you feel withdrawals (dizzy, tingly, brain zaps).. then take 3/4 granules right there and then and less the next time.
Withdrawals were so bad for me, i took 3/4 months to taper and have now only been free of it for 2 weeks (still have tingling hands and aching muscles).
So.. I went from 60 to nothing in 3 months! that is NOT quick.
and anyone who advises reducing the dosage faster is very wrong! the withdrawals are EXTREME!
ALSO.. don't do big drops at a time (ie when I say take out 10 granules a week.. I mean like 1 or 2 less per day).. big jumps are not good.
Initially i tried to go from 60 to 40 in a week and i was a wreck; vertigo (really losing balance! and feeling like I was walking on a boat), aching, flu-like symptoms, vision problems, and ITCHING!!! so bad i couldn't sleep, lots more, memory completely weird .. etc)
Note: I take meds for Bipolar II, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety, PTSD, etc.
: I was (until I stopped completely) on C/T for 1 year (It seemed to help for 2/3 months but I was a zombie after 7/8 months).. perhaps if you have been on it for less you could speed up the tapering just a little..
I strongly advise anyone to get off this drug (or not start it).. its not worth it.
My best to all!

I too have problems with Cymbalta. I have suffered permanent damage from weaning myself off of it. I am now back on it and in the process of weaning off again. I have a website for the FDA. If you go to it, the have a form to fill out concerning adverse reactions to drugs. If we can gethundreds of people to fill these out, maybe they will investigate it. I think there may be a lawsuit here.

Thank you all for making me feel I'm not alone! And you also have some very good suggestions for getting this monster out of my body!
My plan is to get some Benadryl, dramanine, Omega 3 and get some empty capsules. I'll spend my Sunday splitting up those nasty capsules into daily doses that will slowly taper me off the the next 3 months.
I'll take my Benadryl, dramamine and Omega daily and my "correct" dosage of Cymbalta.
Maybe then I can get my life back!!! I've been on this stuff over 3 years and I think I forgot what "normal" means. I'll keep you posted on my progress

First of all, my background. I've been taking Cymbalta for a period of eight months. My prescribed dose has been 30mg daily. Before Cymbalta I was on Fluvoxamine (LUVOX) for about one year and for a brief stint (three weeks) Escitalopram (LEXAPRO). I was diagnosed as someone with great insurance. Just kidding, but that did make my psychiatrist happy: (no kiddding the first thing he always said to me when I walked in was, "Hello Michael, you're Value Options Blue Cross, right?" Haha. In any case, I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder with obsessive tendencies as well.
I weaned off LUVOX and LEXAPRO with almost no problems: a few dizzy spells and some brain zaps. But with Cymbalta, I tried to wean off at a rate of 10mg a week and I felt like I had the flu. Swollen glands, sore throat, headache, soreness all over, etc. I've been weaning off the drug much more successfully using the following method: Opening the capsules and removing a few granules more each day. Please read the post by "arieln" (12/22/07) She totally has the right idea here. Currently I am down to the equivalent of about 12 mg. a day and I feel fine. I occasionally get a headache but it's nothing an aspirin doesn't help with. For those of you that are curious I have found there to be approximately 280 granules in each 30mg. does. I have been removing 7 more each day for a rate of 5mg. less/ week. If symptoms recur I can slow to 3-4 granules less/ dose for a rate of 2.5mg. less/ week.
Anyway, the reason we all feel like c**p is because of an effect Cymbalta creates called an "anticholergenic rebound." This means there has been an interruption in the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Hence, anything you can do to enhance or support acetylcholine production will assist in alleviating withdrawal symptoms. I almost never take vitamins regularly but I've been trying this and it appears to help so far. Here are a few daily vitamins that are helping me get through:
vitamins/ supplements directly related to acetylcholine production
B-Complex
Lecithin (has choline in it) 1200mg.
Lutein 250 mg. Find it in Centrum
vitamins/ supplements indirectly related
Vinpocetine 20mg. (increases dopamine which indirectly boosts acetylcholine)
Ginkgo Biloba 120mg. (increases blood flow in brain which supports creation of neurotransmitters)
St. John's Wart 600 mg. at night (increases acetylcholine by preventing its breakdown)
For Sleep
Melatonin 6 mg. at night
Please note that I am not a doctor or scientist and that this is simply the result of my own research. I have heard other things work for people as well like Benedril, Vicodin, other SSRIs, Xanax etc. But I'm really trying to get off of all drugs.
Diet is important too, so I've been trying to eat right and take a OMEGA 3-6-9 supplement. I've been eating foods that support acetylcholine production such as peanuts, almonds, spinach, wheat germ, and whole eggs. Beef liver is also a good source of choline but who wants to eat that! Thank you for reading this if you actually got to the end. I've been trying hard to understand what's happening to my brain and I hope I've found some useful information. I will continue to post until about two months after I'm totally off so that I can be objective about the effects of this method of withdrawal. See you next week.

hello hello and happy new year.
so wonderful to hear back on my post re: tapering cymbalta.
just to add (during the time I tapered) and i'm feeling even better now.. i think its 4 weeks since i stopped completely. yahoo!
pls note the supplements mentioned by "U-NEED-acetylcholine - 12/31/07"
(thank you MICHAEL!)
i (try to remember to) take :
- 100 of each Vit.B's a day
- 4 x 1000mg salmon oil (omega 3's) = approx. 500 EPAs - the EPAs are important so check the content on the box/bottle.
- very good (and pricey) multivitamin (when i can afford it.. otherwise the best i can buy on a budget)
and watch your diet please.. as per Michael's note..
i find i am so much better without too much SUGAR!!, caffeine, too much wheat, dairy etc.. but this isn't a diet.. just be aware of sugar cravings cos the aftermath is always harsh. (ie after an hour or so).
i also take aspirin cos i still get my headaches. but trying to slow down on this and rather take the herb FEVERFEW.
ok..
Hugs to all and HAPPIEST NEW YEAR.
Happy new me too, without Cymbalta!

Be careful if you are weaning off cymbalta while on topamax. I had major migraines while on cymbalta and started topamax. It seems cymbalta blocked the uptake to topamax. After a month of weaning off of cymbalta and then the 8th day of no cymbalta at all, it was like starting topamax 100mg 2x a day all over again full on. I am going nuts. I knew I had felt some of these symptoms before, but not this strong. Then it hit me during one of the normal feeling times. They weren't from cymbalta, it was topamax x10. I am only on Topamax and off cymbalta for 12 days now. I am working with my doctor to get down to 50mg to see it I can get back to reality and may get off totally. Screw all of this. I will be lucky if I take anything made by a pharm company after cymbalta.

The next episode with cymbalta is with the panic attacks. I never had them before and now I had a nice ride in an ambulance thinking i was dying. As expected, no one out there understands or cares to listen. Just when I though I was 12 days off of cymbalta and going well, this starts. Topamax is under control and at a dose that seems to be manageable. What do I do now, go on another SSRI? Good luck to all of you trying to get off of this drug. I wish you the best.

This is my post from last week that I put in the wrong forum by mistake...
It has been a week so I am checking in with an update. Please note my previous post...
I have no withdrawal symptoms. None. WOW! I am currently Down to about 7.0 mg. daily in a.m. (ALways take your dose in the morning because it will last longer and therefore be less likely to trigger the anticholergenic rebound.)
I have continued with my vitamin regamin and have been very consistent in taking out seven more "dots" of the cymbalta every day. This slow tapering method has been excellent compared to "stretching" the doses or trying to "step down" 10 mg. every two weeks.
Note: I'm not taking any melatonin anymore at night. I felt that I didn't really need it. I am planning on beginning a diet and exercise program this week because I am feeling so well. I think it is important not only to have a plan when coming off psychiatric mediation but also not to take on more than you can reasonably handle. I have not had any major recurrance of my symptoms (depression and anxiety.)
I am looking forward to the point where I come off Cymbalta completely and hope that I continue to have success. Like I promised, I will keep everyone informed. Thanks for reading and thanks to Aerlyn for the props!

This week I got out twice to run and started adjusting my diet to support my goals of being Cymbalta free. I am reducing my intake of sugar and white flour to begin. --More whole grains to keep my blood sugar levels even. I am prone to anxiety and depression, which is why I ended up on Cymbalta in the first place. Therefore if I manage my diet well and exercise a bit, I will be less likely to become anxious and depressed.
This week as I weaned down to seven "dots" a day--the equivalent of less than one mg./day I definitely noticed some feelings of confusion creeping in once in a while, and I had one or two minor headaches. I continue to eat my vitamins. One day when I forgot to take my Cymbalta in the morning and I immediately noticed some "floating feelings" and dizziness, so I am amazed that even at such a low dose the brain is still somewhat dependent on this medication. Tomorrow will be the first day that I'm not taking any Cymbalta, but I have aeryln's advice in mind and I have prepared a capsule with 5 granules in it in case I start getting any brain zaps or major dizziness while I'm driving somewhere! I am curious to see if my vitamin plan will work.
Also, I have decided to try one or two weeks worth of one last supplement while I come off the Cymbalta. It is called 5 HTP and it is directly related to seratonin production in the body and brain. This substance is used in Europe as an anti-depressant but it doesn't have anything close to the kinds of side effects of some of the drugs we've been on because 5HTP is also manufactured by your own body; the supplement gives you a boost.
Therapuetice doses range from 400-1600 mg daily but I'm just going to start with 200 mg. daily along with my other handful of vitamins.
Wish me luck.
P.S. Shoman89...I don't know anything about the medication you're taking for the migranes, but I had about a dozen panic attacks a few years ago. They came and went without my figuring out their exact causes: aggressive exercise and deep breathing/ meditation helped me. I just kind of rolled with them and didn't panic about the panic attacks.
