I have similar "symptoms" to what everybody else has described.  The far away thing, I mean.  It usually happens when I'm concentrating on something calm.  Last time it happened, I was in my therapist's office, just talking.  Sometimes it happens when I'm watching TV.  Everything just seems to move about two or three timnes farther away than it actually is.  I can almost always get it to go away by getting up and doing something, just about anything, active, even just walking around.

I've looked into "Alice in Wonderland Syndrome" (Todd's Syndrome) but I don't feel like that's exactly it.  I've mentioned it to a neurologist, but he pretty much shrugged it off.

It doesn't exactly bother me.  Just a little unsetlling, maybe.  It's happened before, once, while driving.  It doesn't seems safe, so I pulled over until I got it to go away.

Someone mentioned a strange dream.  I have this recurring, surreal dream.  Very difficult to explain.  There are lots of large, round obects.  I keep trying to climb on top, but it's very difficult/frustrating.  Imaginge trying to fold a sphere in half.  Not that that's what I'm trying to do, but it's that troublesome.

My brother and sister both know what I'm talking about. Haven't talked to them about the dream, but they've both experienced the far away thing.  We call it "the smalls".  I do believe there's something genetic about it.

Not sure why I wrote this.  Like I said, it's not really a problem, but it's good to hear similar stories.

I too have had these same symptoms since I was a child. I am now 27 and I dont get it as frequently I would say 10 to 15 times a year and they only last for no longer than 20 minutes. when I was a child it only happened at night while watching tv everything looked far away, I could get rid of it by covering my eyes with my hands and staring at my hands really close up so they were the only things I saw. I would focus on them until I could see them regularly and then slowly shift my focus to something a little farther away until it went away normally a 5 min operation. These symptoms disappeared in my teen years and resurfaced around the age of 22. now it only seems to happen when I am doing something that takes a lot of focus like in a meeting or especially in job interviews I have been on recently. Im beginning to think its just stress/anxiety related because I have been to neurologists, cardiologists and eye doctors and they say I am in perfect health as far as they can see all tests normal. I also dont think its alice in wonderland syndrome because I never have migraines or hearing changes with them just the vision almost like eye strain. I hope this helps somebody and I hope someone can figure out what this mysterious condition is

This happened to me for the first time when I had high body temperature, around 39 degrees Celsius. I called it "far away, far away".Feeling like everything's far away, tiny, when I concentrate on one thing for 10 seconds an more, but when I panic it happens immediately. I had it when I was about to fall asleep, when I was around 7-8 years old. Now I'm 17 and it happens sometimes when I have high temperature. I was able to eliminate it by not thinking about it and I haven't had have it for like 10 years and now it's back. Few days ago my body temp quickly increased to 38 degrees and I've been taking 500mg Cefaclor antibiotic for bacteria prevention by my doctor's recommendation. Interesting, every time I started taking it, the feeling would come back, maybe it's because of the antibiotic itself or because of the illness.
all in all, don't worry guys, it's nothing, it passes by time, try not to think about it. I found on the internet that it might be "Alice In Wonderland Syndrome" or "Micropsia" but it is somehow too "drastic" to me.
Ok you can try this to help getting over the feeling, as it helps me. Look at one object. The feeling appears. take the object and slowly bring it closer and closer to your eyes. Than slowly take it back where it was in the first place. The feeling will be of much less intensity and you will feel relieved. Just don't panic, as it will be worse. There's nothing wrong with us, just think about those 100 times worse diseases and how we trully are happy for not having them. After all, this is NOT a disease.

I used to have this as a kid, the idea+optical illusion of not only seeing but feeling that my hands were very small, or far away, and that other people and objects were impossibly tall. Sometimes (seldom) the effects were reversed, huge hands, gigantic steps, the ceiling very close to my head and always a lot of vertigo. Sometimes, but not always these were joined by rapidly increasing and fading echo of all sounds perceived, even my own voice. This would happen before a headache and fevers, and almost every time after waking up. This freaked me out, but since my parents did not believe me I just waited until it passed away. After making some research I learned that these symptoms are called "Mycropsia" or "alice in wonderland syndrome" which are usually precursors to fever or migraine. I never developed a migraine problem, and by adolescence all the symptoms disappeared and have not had one of those scary episodes ever since.

I googled the following words "far away vision nightmare" and was surprised I found anything.

I used to have the same sensations as a child, only 3 instances I can remember, but haven't had one since. Before going to sleep I would close my eyes and sometimes see what could only be described as the inside of a twirling twister, then I would open my eyes and everything would appear far away. However this seemed to always be followed by a nightmare, the scariest ones I can ever remember having. They seem ridiculous now but they were always about groups of big round people running passed me and I'm trying to stop them!!??

When I would have these visions before going to sleep I was always freaked out and would have to sleep in my parents room in preperation for the inevitable nightmare! I'm sure if they happened more often I would have controlled them better.

But still I can't believe it happens to people now!?

On a complete whim i googled 'vision objects far away tired' and also didn't think I would find anything.

I first experienced this at the age of 8 whilst on holiday and was suffering from a fever. I experienced the distance perception of objects completely screw up, and really loud noises in my head. Closing my eyes just made it worse. It happened many more times whilst I was a kid and I really struggled trying to explain to my mum what was happening. We went to the doctors and the doctor actually said something along the lines of 'be careful about what you are saying because hearing things/voices and seeing things will look bad if this goes down on your medical record'. The doctor was hinting to my mum some sort of mental illness. I was only 9 years old but this scared the heck out of me.

It's safe to say that it scared me enough to never ever bring it up with anyone ever again. Luckily like many other people have pointed out here, I grew out of it after a couple of years. But every 6 months or so, it still happens, often late at night as I'm trying to sleep. It feels like the hardest thing to explain what is actually happening. It happened last weekend and like I said at the beginning I put my hope in Google, and was shocked/relieved to find this forum.

The first post was 3 years ago i think it said, but thank you to whoever you are. It feels insanely good after 13 years to know that the symptoms are actually part of a real condition and that it has a name! To anyone else who stumbles across this forum, I find the best thing to control the symptoms for me is to stare at my wall from about 6 inches away whilst in bed and this seems to stop everything until I get tired enough to fall asleep.

I had the same thing happen as a child, but not as much anymore. I am 28, but it just happened a couple days ago again. People started looking further away than they really were, but I got kind of dizzy and not feeling good this time. As a kid, I kind of liked it when it would happen and would try and make it stay for a while, but then would get tired of it and close my eyes or do something to make it stop.

I would be watching t.v. or reading at night and all of a sudden I would feel as though everything moved far away or I became really tall. It was a cool feeling. I never knew what it was for sure and have not had it happen as an adult.

I had something similar when I was young. It would happen at night once I was in bed, watching t.v. or reading. All of a sudden everything would zoom smaller or I would zoom larger, not sure which. It was the strangest feeling. I haven't had that happen in years. though.

Omg! i have been having the same symptoms!!! i always wonder if it was just me or other people suffer with this. I recently went to the eye doctor but they told me nothing was wrong with my eyes, so i wondered if i was really going mad lol . But when it happens, its hard for me to concentrate of what is going on around me. Especially at my classes. Its really uncomfortable and occurs for a long period of time. I am 17 years of age and i find it getting worst everytime it happens

I have this happen to me often, maybe once a month or once every couple of months. It comes whenever it wants to, either when i am watching tv or laying in bed getting ready to fall asleep. If I laying in bed with my eyes closed I can feel the vision change without my eyes being open ( I know that sounds strange), but when I have the vision change when my eyes are open i start to go into auto-panic mode where i feel i have to correct the vision problem or it will get worse. So i will stand up and go to the sink and splash water on my face and what normally changes my vision back to normal is: i will hold an object whether it be my hand or a pillow... etc..... close to my face and focus on the detail of the object up close and after a few minutes of this exerise my vision normally returns to normal. I have had this my entire life (I am 29 years old now) and when i was younger my mother took me to the eye doctor and i tried to explain what was happening and he kind of just blew the symptoms off as nothing. I have just dealt with the effects of it since on my own.

lol wow. I see a lot of people are having this same problem. Well..when I explained to my doctor what was going on..I described it the same as I have read most people on here write. Things would all of a sudden look very far away..small..like it was out of reach when it was right next to me. It has happened ever since I was very young...I remember the first time it happened I was 9 years old..im now 24 and still have the same problem. It use to scare me so bad I would have panic attacks...my heart rate would go up..i would then start seeing black spots which the doctor told me my blood pressure is high when that happens...and i would go into having a panic attack..so my doctor perscribed me klonopin. Over the years I have tried lots of things when it happens. I found that going outside...getting some fresh air..taking deep breaths and focusing on something really close to me works best. Sometimes it will only last a few minutes then there are sometimes it would last hours. Laying down in a dark room doesn't help..trust me..it actually makes it worse..when you open up your eyes..all you do is panic all over again because your thinking..oh my god why hasnt it gone away whats wrong..lol...My doctor told me sometimes when it happens..its because i havent had enough sleep...stress..or it can also happen when you are really focused on something..he basically said your eyes are playing tricks on you. Now I also have migraines..and sometimes this could be an aura from a migraine attack..it can happen during a migraine or before a migraine..he also said that. So if you are known for having migraine attacks..that could also be a warning sign that one is about to come on if your head isn't already hurting. Other than that...it also happens when im really angry and arguing with someone..during a heated argument their face would do the same thing..look very small and far away..but he did say being upset and stress can cause it as well lol..but yeah..if this happens to any of you again..dont freak out..try what i do..because according to not 1 but 3 doctors i have asked about it..they all said the same thing after running lots of test on me..MRI...blood work..all of that..Its nothing serious..and yes it is a scary thing..but honestly after a while you get use to it...but next time it happens..this is exactly what I do...when you first go outside take a deep breath in..count 10..release 10..(counting takes your mind off of it)..then find something close to you..focus on it..the feeling will go away :) it works for me every time..i hope this was helpful to you all...but seriously..try that..it really works..after dealing with it for 15 almost 16 years..i HAD to find some kind of way to stop it lol.

I've had these before,as stated, usually when going to bed, but usually when there is nothing on in the room, such as a tv, radio, fan... I've also had it to where everything looked far away and very clear, but also where everything seemed super loud. Same sinerio, nothing on in my room, dead silence, but every slight creak, or wind blowing outside was as if it were amplified over a loud speaker. Not very pleasant while trying to sleep. I just try my best to ignore it and it goes away in about 15 minutes. Or I get used to it and go to sleep, wake up the next day and I'm fine....
