No pjs. No covers in bed. Cold damp cloth on his forehead. Something to keep him cool.

I don't know if I should say I'm glad to see this post here after doing a google search. Alot of people seem to have the same problem. My problem started when I was a kid. It was really frightening back then. Even when I closed my eyes it wouldn't go back to normal. As I grew older I realised that walking and looking at a bright light solved the problem for me. Also splash some cold water on your eyes. I suggest you try this the next time it happens.
Good luck! Hope my answer helps! :-)

I get the exact same thing and hade it since I was a kid, vary scary and has recently come back with a vengence. seems to happen rite when I wake up somtimes, and everything looks far away. Big open rooms seem to effect me and I find sleeping in smaller rooms helps for some reason. Not sure why it has come back recently, iv recently recovered from about 6 months of horrible side effects from an anti malaria drug known as mefloquine I took on a trip to Nepal in october of 2012, maybe it hade somthing to do with it comming back. vary scary tho and i thought not many other people would have experience it.

It is really nice to see that someone shares the exact same experience as me. i tried to research this a couple of years ago but got no hits. like you i usually got the vision before i went to sleep. at first i thought it was cool, and i felt that i could do something no one else could do, but i didn't bother telling people because of the stupid sound of the explanation. what i usually describe it like is like looking through a pair of binoculars the other way.
i Have not went to the doctor because i get the vision 4 times a year, its not hurting, i feel perfectly fine (except when you are with someone else) and i have had it since i was a child and nothing bad has come out of it.
The next time you get this vision you should hold an object or your hand very close to your eyes. you will feel that your sight will go back to normal (but only when holding something close). you will go back to "far away vision" when removing that object, so hold it there for a while so your sight will adjust properly. do it again and again, and you will get your normal vision back;) This helps me, so hope this helps you

I used to experience the "everything is far-away vision". When I was bout 8 years old, I had a very high fever from something (they never figured it out). The fever caused my parents to put me in the hospital - was there for a week (this was way back in the early 1960s). Most of the time I was semi-consious and I now only remember when I was getting better after about 4 days or so. Anyway, when they released me I had the same vision that has been discribed by so many people - EVERYTHING looked like it was very far away - the TV, doors, walls, people, everything I looked at was tiny and far away although clear. I told this to my parents, but I don't think they understood. My vision stayed that way for weeks and then slowly I started having normal vision. After a few years I had normal vision most of the time but I could make my vision go back to "far-away vision" purposely by just focussing on one object for a minuit or so. So sometimes in school, looking at the blackboard, it would happen by accident. The episodes slowly diminished over the years and by the time I was 18 or so, never had them again. I'm 56 now. I would like to know what causes this even though I don't have the problem anymore. Its amazing to see that so many other people have experienced the same thing - I thought I was the only one.

I used to get this a lot as a kid ,i'm 40 now ,when i was tired and in bed the walls and wardrobe etc seemed about 5 x further away than they were and then seemed realy close,it felt relaxing and good to be honest. at the same time my bed matress would feel realy soft but realy hard( like concrete) at the same time ,it's hard to explain and doesn't make sense but it feels like you are in a trance or something....i also remember extremes of ultra quietness and lots of noises at the same time...it felt like extreme opposite feelings/senses happening at the same time.
when i closed my eyes i always had a vision of walking up a steep hill on a busy street and always walking past the same bus stop shelter and then starting at the bottom again and going past the bus stop again and again, weird.
Not sure if it's connected but i had a realy vivid dream when i was about 5 years old, i was laying on the floor near a wall in my mum and dads bedroom and i lifted my legs in the air along the wall but my legs were about 8 foot long and my feet were touching the celling! At the time i thought it actually happened and it wasn't a dream so maybe it was the far away trance thing? or just a vivid dream.

Grateful for all the stories here, as I have never known of anyone else who experienced this. I got this all the time in school as a child, especially if I was tired. The teacher would look like she was very small/far away and sounds were also a bit distorted (like in a tunnel). My handwriting would get microscopic and I'd put my face down very close to the paper. All my teachers used to complain that my handwriting was so small (but neat!), but I never thought to tell anyone about my vision issues. I could still function during these episodes, but felt odd/distant. I was slightly frightened but also a bit fascinated. By age 11, I had to get glasses for near-sightedness, so maybe eyestrain was a contributing factor. I rarely had any episodes after this point.

Looks like the problem is associated with the eye focusing rather than being a symptom of some neurological disease. Many have told they have glasses, and usually drowziness, fever or intense focusing triggers the problem. Yet I don't think the eye muscles themselves causes it but rather visual cortex perhaps is strained or gets unsynchronized.
Wish there was a research studying this, so I could volunteer since I know focusing something intensively triggers this for me nearly always. I want to know whether it's the eyes or brain that is the reason for this phenomenon.

This just happened to me recently after a long long time. I'm 37 yo now, and didn't experience this since a long time. But I remember happening this during my childhood. It would happen only at night, typically before going to bed and more frequently when I had fever. It would remain for a few minutes to may be up to an hour or so. It feels funny and intriguing. :)

This phenomenon can occur when you are in a special mental state called Hypnosis. Unlike common belief, you do not need a stage hypnotist or therapeutic hypnotist to get yourself in a state of hypnosis. You can enter hypnosis when someone talks to you when you are focused on that person. Or it can happen when you are focused inward such as during meditation.
Not all hypnosis states produce this visual effect but if you experience this visual effect you are most certain in a state of hypnosis. There are two versions of this visual effect. Everything can seem very far away or extremely close to you. You can even sense that you are in this state when your eyes are closed. Even if you can't see anything, you can still "sense" you are in this state. It happens sometimes with me during meditation when I suddenly sense that I am in this zoom-out or zoom-in state, but having my eyes closed. If I then open my eyes to verify this, it is always correct, I am actually in that state. Very cool! This confirms it has nothing to do with the eyes but instead with your brain's perception.
If you experience this phenomenon only when someone is talking to you, watching TV, during meditation, etc, it is mostly likely NOT a medical condition such as Micropsia.
Not everyone experiences these phenomena. For me it happens a few times a year while others I have talked to have never experienced such a thing. You might get sheepish looks from people when you try to explain the experience and some people might send you in the wrong direction for an explanation.
There is actually an opportunity when this happens to you. When you are in a state of hypnosis your subconscious is very open to suggestion. So you can talk to yourself and change something you don't like. Try experimenting with that and see what kind of results you can get.
