This is great. I've always wondered if I was the only one this happened to. I used to have the exact same thing happen to me once every month or two when I was a teenager but haven't had that experience in several months now. I always used to wonder if I had epilypsy or some other medical problem, but never got it checked out.

Although some people don't like the feeling, I always enjoyed it. Kind of like a high, but every time it happened I would feel refreshed with a new level of energy afterwards. I never passed out and the worst thing that ever happened was one time it happened while I was standing in the living room and I began to shake a bit and fell over and landed on top of a laundry basket which broke.

It's a phenomenon called "orthostatic hypo tension". This happens as when you stretch you're demanding that the blood leaves where it is and goes to where it's needed. When you're sitting and relaxing your blood pressure settles at a "normal" range of about 120/80. When you stand up suddenly, or stretch suddenly, your blood is needed at the organs that you are demanding, or when you stand up, your blood rushes to the bottom (laws of gravity) of your body, therefore your blood pressure goes WAYYY down very quickly. What causes the dizziness is the blood suddenly leaves your brain and goes to the part of the body that it's needed for that second . You'll find, though, that after you've been standing for a second or two, or after you're done stretching, your blood pressure will settle again.
Happy stretching!

This happens to me too. I think the main reason you feel light-headed when you stretch is because reaching to the sky in essence tends to put pressure on your neck from your shoulders and arms which in turn cuts off some circulation to your brain.

Hello my daughter read your post and she just had an EEG done today we're still waiting for the results. She is 11 years old and pretty much explains what happens exactly the way you did. This is what she says-

Okay, sometimes when I stretch, well, most of the time, I get a little light-headed, and a tingly feeling, sometimes I feel like I'm shaking, but I know I'm not because sometimes I'm around someone when I do it, and they don't make a comment on shaking. I've passed out about three times in the last week in a half. I feel as if I zone out for awhile, and I kinda of hear funny. Yes, my heart does feel a little fluttery when I do. I saw a doctor, and at first she said it was because a put my head back and it was cutting off the circulation to my brain, and I tried stretching without putting my head back when I stretch, and I still did it. Well, then I had to get an EEG, wich isn't scary at all.

This sounds like what I suffer; POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). I’m 20 years old and I’ve been a sufferer for 3 years, but have only recently been diagnosed. I look normal, I mainly act normal, but I don’t feel normal. I have a wide mixture of the symptoms listed in most of these posts. For 3 years it was the opinion of friends, family members and countless specialists that my symptoms were fabricated as a method of gaining sympathy and attention. All my 27 tests came back normal except one - it’s called a tilt table test (TTT). Thankfully it is a simple and non-evasive test to be diagnosed. POTS is common in females (80%) 10-50 years old. It can vary in severity and symptoms, and since it can be so sporadic in nature it is often misdiagnosed.

If these symptoms aren’t common for you or only happen (for example) around twice a year or only when you stretch, you could simply have low blood pressure and perhaps you were a little dehydrated (too much coffee or alcohol?) the days you showed symptoms. However POTS is worth researching so ask for a referral at your GP for the TTT. It’s nice to finally have a diagnosis.

wow i'm so glad so many other people have it and not just me. i get lightheaded also when standing up from a sitting position and when stretching. it's been happening for a while now. and i don't drink all that much water, so that might be a reason. and as for food, yeah maybe i need to eat more in the mornings rather than waiting for 1 or 2pm to hit.

I feel something just like this, when I stretch my head just goes hazy... and as soon as I've noticed something like a cup or a light, my mind won't stop thinking about it, I'm 15 and it's been happening since I was about 12... so I feel it might be something to do with hormones or something along those lines.
But it was only just now that I was about to go upstairs and I just fell down on the first step... normally I have to stretch and yawn and it just happens, but this time it happened straight away and caused me to actually fall, it may have just been delayed from when I stood up about 7 seconds earlier.

It's good to no it's not just me who is experiencing this weird feeling.

This used to happen to me all the time in high school, and I believe it is called Syncope. The type everyone is describing here is called Orthostatic Syncope and occurs with a change in body posture that leads to a sudden drop in blood pressure. It also occurs when you stretch, and muscles that had been sitting dormant suddenly require blood, which rushes away from the brain.

Blood drains away from the brain and it starts shutting down but quickly recovers once the blood pressure returns to normal.

It often does bring a sense of euphoria and in fact, teenagers have begun to induce syncope themselves to get that high in a game called "The Pass Out Game".

Depriving the brain of oxygen is very dangerous and syncope should be avoided. The best way to avoid it is to try and make yourself stretch only one muscle group at a time, or stand up slowly if you've been sitting for a long time.

I get this often and have actually passed out. The passing out is strange. My head is flooded with loud voices and it feels like falling asleep. Many times, once I'm on the ground, I regain consciousness, but other times, I fall into a deep sleep.

Once this happened when I went to hug my husband. The stretch of reaching my arms around him alone made me pass out. I was feeling very weak and tired that morning, so perhaps more vulnerable to it. ?

I have wondered if it could have something to do with the spine. For me, it almost seems like it happens when I stretch my back in certain ways. Could there be something building up around the spine that gets released in a stretch?

hey i was having a lot of the same problems...i just recently started having them though...I'm a athlete in everything in high school and had no problems whatsoever, then in college my first couple years i had no problems while i was wrestling and playing football...now my junior i just workout but recently i been feeling dizzy when i do and very lightheaded when i do a certain stretch when i hold my breath and reach down and touch my toes while stretching my back....i always felt dizzy but never passed out....until a few weeks ago, i was stretching like that at my parents place and i totally blacked out and fell over pulling chairs on top of me and hitting the counter with my head behind me...then i started seizing and do not remember a thing...i woke up to my arms going crazy and then finally being able to control it and became delirious and didn't know anything as to where i was or what i was doing....this is the first time ever passing out and it was pretty scary but now i feel fine but any type of stretch like that will make me pass out now...haven't went to the doctor yet but I will soon

Add one more to the list. I've gotten dizzy when i stretch to touch my toes, lean bakc in a chair and stretch, stand up and stretch, etc for the past 30 yearsa and NEVER heard of this happening to anyone but me. It feels good to know i'm not alone. I'm going to try the thing of drinking more fluids (although i suspect that may be more related to the lightheadedness i get upon standing, than what happens when stretching). All i drink is diet pepsi and coffee o.O seriously! Thanks everyone who has posted :-D .

I have been searching for others that have this experience. I, like many of you, enjoy the “out of body” feeling you get from stretching. It does remind me of the “California pass out game” we used to play in middle school. It also reminds me of the thought provoking experiences I have had when I did any hallucinogen in high school. I figured that it could be a quick flashback, but really didn’t believe this theory. Sometimes I get worried that a coworker will approach me and ask an important question while I am feeling these effects at which time I will respond in an offbeat manner. It is nice to revitalize myself with a good stretch and yawn.

Thank you all for some reference points to do some more research.

Have a great day and happy yawning.

I have been having these same symptoms for years and after being tested by neurologist and several heart specialist they determined that I had low blood pressure.

The "fix" that I was prescribed was a medicine called Fludrocortisone. Apparently it thickens the blood enough so that when I stand, I don't have that insane drop in blood pressure. I think the worst I have ever had recorded on me was I went from 130/70 to 100/ 60 or so. My doctor also suggested increasing my sodium intake to help with the thickening of my blood, so far it has worked really well! I am happy to say that my passing out experiences are down from once or twice daily to maybe once or twice a week! I hope this helps!

Hi, im 13 and just about 5 minutes ago blacked out, my first reaction was frightened but now im laughing. i was watching a movie got up from my chair stretched with head leaned back and BLACKED OUT i apparantly fell flat on my face. i was aware of the movies WORDS still going on it was like a dream but no picture. it was about like 15 seconds. i have streatched like this before and gotten light headed and this blackness surrounds and i can only see what is in the middle of my vision. but this is the first time that i have actually blacked out. from one of the posts i will DEFIANATELY drink more water and eat more salt. cause im a coke finatic and i absolutely HATE water... i dont want to black out with people around (a little embarrasing?) anyway THANK YOU SO MUCH cause i thought it was just me having this trouble. ~Andrew Furci~
